  • My cousin has an 02 focus that he blew the clutch on. This video was out when he replaced it. Maybe he should have done his homework and he would still have a trans. lmao

  • @ 9:23 isnt that bad for the handbrake (not pressing button while pulling) ?

  • at 12:00 minute mark, i can see an alignment issue by looking at the tire.

  • @palillo2006 when tires are hanging in the air like that, theyre gonna have mad positive camber as a result of the way they hang on the suspension assembly. This being said you shouldnt look for alignment issues on a lifted vehicle

  • @qwerty1274 you are correct in all of that statement but notice the front tires have worn in a way showing there is a alignment problem haha funny how that works. later friend

  • hey eric, question for you. I need to replace my clutch but it is a 2005 focus zx5,,,is the same process?

  • @ damianzuczek, hi. Just did my mondeo yesterday it's a 2003 reg diesel. Check it on my YouTube account. It's very hard job

  • Porn for engineers...

  • Hi, any tips on becoming a mechanic? Im 15 and I love working around cars

  • @ScuderiaF3rrari Try to get involved with your family's own auto repairs and go to vocational school if your high school offers that.

  • Great video as always Eric! Couple of questions: Do you ever use penetrating fluid on the bolts before you start a job? Also, what brand of spanners do you use? Cheers.

  • Like for the fullvideo upload!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Try to avoid working under a car alone... or out of earshot of someone else.

  • @Pendemic Great tip!

  • @ 28:37 it's also a good idea to always loosen the fill plug before draining the fluid because if you drain the fluid and the fill plug is fucked...you're fucked because you won't be able to refill the transmission.

  • HOLY FUCK, CAN I HAVE YOUR CLOCK?

  • @halosux4life yes my son you can have it

  • @halosux4life it is a cool clock and i don't like elvis.

  • My favorite quote is "try to avoid breaking things".

I know what he means but it's still funny. Love all the videos!

  • <3 you Eric =D ill be buying your vids too =)

  • I will second the advice on the safety glasses. Having chunks of rust and crap in your freaking eyeball is no fun. Neither is getting a 1200 dollar ER bill.

  • @peektwice had a piece of slag fly off of a weld from across the bay i was working in, and went in my eye. didnt hurt except the burning. but yeah it sucks

  • how is the ford to work on compared to acuras?

  • And more dislikes from ScottyDoucher & fans.

  • lol all the broken bits on those gear linkages are the exact same bits that broke on mine.

  • I had to do it in my Ford Mondeo. Believe me, a lot to f...k with. I took a one whole day but afterwards I deserved a beer :)

  • I'm pretty sure ETCG should ask Santa for a set of ratcheting wrenches for Christmas.

  • @Grimmcheesesammich and a ball joint splitter

  • damn, hope this video help many people. god bless u dude

  • hey eric i have a question will it ruin your battery if you set it down on concrete?

  • @muddinmowerbuilder13

This myth has been debunked, a modern battery is not affected at all by putting on concrete or the ground. At one time, it was thought to be true because the old battery cases would slowly leak fluid (think 100 years ago, the casings were rubber or some other material) so putting it on a hard surface would speed up the leaking/leeching so the ground was thought to be discharging the battery. In a way it was, but it does not apply now.

  • I really like these videos! I always think, "How do you eat a whole elephant? One bite at a time."

I also liked how you cut the metal piece to gain access to the bolt above the exhaust pipe, but in Hondas, I don't think there's anything to cut. In the two Hondas I did, I had to take part of the exhaust off. The good news, if there is any, is it wasn't welded to the cat- but bolted on with those spring bolts! WHEW!

    Keep up the great work!

  • When are you getting a lift? You can save tons of time plus it's safer.

  • Oh and just one comment, at 19:00, usually the reservoir has a divider inside that prevents the clutch circuit from draining the brake circuit and vice versa. So it's probably safe to just open the hydraulic line and drain it completely. It's probably a good idea too, since most shops never flush the clutch hydraulics even if they do the brakes, so the fluid in there is *really* bad and old and that will eventually ruin your clutch cylinders.

  • This is so awesome. I really hope you get a TV show.

  • liked,689stars,playlisted,favorite,and facebook linked

    love yah man

    another awe-mazing video

    BEST TEACHER EVERRRR

    and

    still dirty

  • The great part of these videos is the problem solving, seemingly in real time. I would have bogged down trying to take the exhaust manifold off, and possibly having to deal with broken studs and bolts that never needed to be removed. It would have taken me far longer. The way you did it here is a simple weld and you're back in business hours sooner.

  • Eric, I just wish that I am living in your area so you could service my car :(

  • @EricTheCarGuy 24:21 you forgot about the unwritten 5 min rule about cars which is the simplest of things always take forever

  • Hey Eric wheres Part 2?

  • On my friends car the thread on the axle right on the beginning i messed up (looks like it was hit with a hammer) and we cant get the axle nut on. Is there any way around that, that you know of instead of just replacing the whole cv?

  • ford Fix Or Repair Daily

  • Thanks Eric

  • Interesting experiment -going open source.

Radiohead offered an album once by donation, the rational being that given personal responsibility, many people opt to pay what they can afford, rather than feeling compelled to get something for free.

    Very libertarian.

I don't know your motives, just sayin'

  • Well I'm gonna buy the video because mechanic is really interesting. I don't own a Ford, I own a 1964 Volkswagen Beetle and it's fun to see the difference of technology between automobiles.

  • Hey Eric, you have any videos of fuel injector replacement? One on a 1991 Nissan Maxima especially would be accripated.

  • I have a torrented tunebite program so i can rip you video off youtube and burn it as one complete video for myself... at which I will sell at a reduced price muahahhhahaaaaa... jk that would be mean, stoked for this professional fix, ty Eric.

  • cut and weld thats the easy way to get around these kinda set backs think outside the book like you just did cool lol.

  • Eric, i have done many of these and i must say your video/manual is very well edited and performed. from what i could see in part one I would recommend it, like always thanks for sharing your knowledge with others, Will

  • Was that 1/4" that broke tawain as well? LOL

  • Did I see tawain on that torx bit???

  • im gonna watch it just on youtube because im a student and i sporadic on cash...id wouldnt mind if you did more like this

  • Hey Eric, I just took the ASE Steering and Suspension certification test and I past it with a 30 out of 40 questions correct.

  • @13FravelJ Congrats man I hope to take my first ASE test soon. I'm still in automotive school

  • @Chris07860 So am I, We just took the steering and Suspension Certification test. We are taking the Brakes ASE certification test here in about a month. the Steering and suspension test is not that hard, its pretty easy. Do you know what your first test is? Good luck.

  • @13FravelJ - congrats, the tests are pretty easy, so far i got 22 ASE and MECP certification, i don't work on cars anymore (just at home) but i'm proud to have my certifications.

  • @AE86HachiRokuGTS WOW thats alot. What is MECP certifications? how long have you worked on cars professionally?

  • @13FravelJ - MECP means 'Mobile Electronics Certified Professional' i have the Advanced certification, but i want to get the master. I have 7 years professionally (5 in auto, 2 in truck and 2 in car audio) I worked on truck and audio jobs at the same time.

  • thanks for the vid eric! these videos are so in depth its incredible!

  • How much do you charge the customer for this? and how many hours of work?

  • This is brilliant. This is totally unique, it is not about what to remove it is about how to solve the problems that arise. I like the fact that you do not have a lift because I do not have one..

Off to have a look at your website.

  • Thanks for the video Eric! Looking forward to the remaining parts.

  • Eric, thank you very much for this video manual. You are the man.

  • why do front wheel drive cars have cv joints and not u-joints?

  • you can use a silicone spray when prying plastic or rubber parts to act as a penetrating fluid. works great.

  • And Elvis just keeps on rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking, and rocking,

  • When is that new lift coming?

  • This was a great video!!! I wanna see more next week Eric! Manuel transmissions are a nightmare in my book and I only drive automatic. Ford Focuses are very difficult to work on as well as everything is so tight. Awesome video!!!

    Thanks,

    Marc

  • i had to buy it i was to impatient.

  • @coltonduty1234 Same :D

  • Eric, you look tired today budd. Everything well?

  • eric, you're too generous!! and yes, i still bought the full length version!!! supporting you is a great cause!!

  • See, I didn't even know you had pro repair videos available for purchase. You should try to promote that more. Amazingly detailed videos. Thanks for making these available. Will be checking out the rest of the stuff available in your store now.

  • I vote for more ETCG. Jack stands for a clutch?! GOOD LUCK! My S10 ThrowOut R/R was hard enough with a lift! Geez. Passenger front rubber: Negative camber, or are my eyes playing tricks on me? Plastic in a trans? What are they thinking?! NuMbEr* 5 hex? I've always heard fractional inch and metric hex sizes. Did I miss something? WHAT?!?! You're leaving us on a cliff-hanger ending?! How did you get that lower strut mount off of the Tie-Rod?! Geez, I'm gonna wonder that all week! Pickle-Fork?

  • I was always told in school to never impact those axle nuts, since you're impacting on the CV joint and the bearing... yet everyone I see does it

  • @TheDennyvu Yes, you're right about that. But in reality and not in theory, the impact doesn't do much to hurt the axle at all. Those forces are nothing compared to what is actually experienced while driving. I have done a lot of axles using impact guns and had no negative results. But yes, school is right in teaching the absolute correct way to do it.

  • Hey Eric, I've got a Toyota echo that needs a clutch. How much would be a fare price on getting it replaced? Thanks!

  • now that was good iv workd on thows what i did 4 the bottom ball jont was a big pice of scaffolding and it came rite out

  • Ratchet spanners are handy on those seized bolts on the bell housing

  • Is the Focus rusty underneath?

  • Good job Eric! I bet you are already looking into getting a car lift for the shop! I'm a big DIY mechanic myself, and my last job (swapping carter pan seal) i did on a lift and damn, that is so much easier then messing around on the floor outside!

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the video's (even though i don't have a focus!)

My next job, putting in cruise control on my 2002 Volvo V40 diesel!

  • Eric, can you do an engine mount check and or replacement?

  • Eric, great job as usual - can't wait for parts 2-4!

  • Shweet, thanks Eric for that great video. Now I have to buy the other parts since I can't wait for them to come out!

  • i wish this was the honda (acura) one... but beggars cant be choosers

  • Ohhh and one other thing... i had that exact same Elvis clock in my room when i was a kid... God I miss that clock.

  • Eric, do you have access to the technical documentation for the car? A how to like Chilton or Haynes or whatever the pro's use?

  • Hey Eric, great job with the video… I can't wait to see the rest. This is exactly how I wanted to shoot my 4T65E-HD trans removal video, unfortunately I didn’t have enough time or the best location (outside). I like how you are honest, open minded, and not afraid to speak your mind. I like the way you connect with the viewer saying things like "I Think" or "I have my doubts" or just what's going on in your head.

  • It makes the viewer feel like they are right alongside with you, which is what an instructional video is all about.

  • When I took my trans out, I used an instructional video, but it was more like "take this out"... "now take this out"... "and now take that out". Not very fun… and when I got lost there was no way for me to reconnect. You on the other have provided all kinds of little thought processes that might help if the viewer gets lost or stuck. Bravo and keep up the good work!!!

  • cool beans, now give us the b-series valve adjustment free punk! :)

  • I don't own a Ford Focus but I bought the video, partly because I wasn't willing to wait for the remaining episodes, partly because I enjoy watching how a professional approaches & works thru issues that would probably take me hours to figure out and partly because it cost me less than my lunch today. Thanks for the video its thorough and detailed the only thing missing (from my experience on big jobs) is the swearing!

  • @knunne1 Eric is by far the happiest and nicest of all mechanics ;).

  • Normally you just give the dealer your car VIN and they should be able to give you the radio code.

  • How many tons are those jack stands rated for? They look pretty beefy.

  • so i had my clutch changed twice. the first time it seemed fine until my clutch started slipping again. the second mechanic said the first didn't cut the flywheel and because of that the clutch was over heating causing it to slip. so i had them put a new one in. Is this plausible? or did I just drop 800 for a pointless clutch replacement?

  • nice video love the how to videos

  • Thank you for this Eric, if i had more money I'd buy everything you have to offer.

  • great job---i need toyota repairs videos in the future

  • aaww you shouldve post this video before so i dont need to pay someone to swap my engine, now i have an idea yay!!!

  • I agree about the safety glasses. Nothing ruins your day faster than having wads of crud rain down into your eyes while working underneath there. Especially as you're breaking stuff loose.

    Great vid. Keep it up!

  • how long did it take u all together?

  • Hey Eric thanks for the freebee!!!! you did the right thing in my opinion by cutting the bracket, you can always weld it back or leave it like that for the next clutch job!!LOL

  • Transverse engines come with andvantages but, boy are they a pain in the keaster to work on.

  • Eric, I want you to get a work shirt that says, "Fred".

  • Wow! At 31:01 that was either a real good editing job or you can change tools real fast!! LOL

  • shop looks sick man!

  • OMG you put a battery on the concrete!!

  • @joshds25 Yes. You might be misinformed if you think that is a bad thing as it doesn't harm the battery at all unless you set it down very hard on small rocks or something that can damage the case.

  • YOU ROCK!!

  • I totally agree on the cutting the shield next to the exhaust. Those bolts on the pipe get rusty and easilly snap. Especially the nuts on the pipe clamps.

They break half the time and then you need to get a new one. It's not expensive but it uses valuable time.

  • @McKaamos My thoughts exactly, thanks for the comment.

  • @McKaamos or when there studs and you break them off, hopefully you can get a torch in to heat the metal red hot and use a vice grip to turn them out...............

  • Nice cliff hangar lol

  • This looks like a nightmare. My 68 Triumph was easy. I hate newer cars to work on. And they aren't as much fun to drive. To me anyway.

  • @jimisback Honestly this one wasn't that bad I've done much worse.

  • Thanks Eric I need to do the clutch on my 2007 Focus with it's MTX-75 tranny.

    This will help!!

  • @crabhab Awesome, I'm happy to help.

  • Where can I get one of those clocks?

  • @pfleeger2010 Not sure, I got that one about 20 years ago.

  • Tremdous Ford Engineering. Make it as difficult as possible to the point where we have to cut things to get access.. Good job Ford

  • @Oozingmachismo24 In fairness that was due to the rust on the exhaust, if I had removed the exhaust that would not have been necessary.

  • You might want to adjust the white balance on your camera. It will get rid of the green hue at the start of this video.

  • @paxilill Actually it was worse, it went very red for some reason so I corrected in post. You try being a camera man, sound guy, presenter and mechanic all in one shoot, you'll miss something I'm sure of it.

  • Eric, the red 3.5 ton low profile jacks from Costco for $100 is a great buy. It lifts quick, and drops slow and controlled. Had mines for 3 years with no leaks. Just saying since I saw your jack drop the car pretty quick and scary.

  • @fusionstar916 The Torin? I'm also thinking about getting that. Nice to hear that it works well.

  • @HONDAxACURA Actually the Arcan XL35R Haven't had much luck from torin products except the double locking jack-stands.

  • @fusionstar916 Right right. Confusing the one with the Sams Club brand. Is the handle detachable after you jack up the car?

  • @HONDAxACURA Well, the top half can be removed while jacked as it comes in 2 segments. I haven't had the need to remove the whole arm.

  • @fusionstar916 Thanks for the tip but I think the next 'lifting tool' I get will be a lift if I can swing it.

  • @EricTheCarGuy There's a topic for another video!

I'd love to have a lift, and they aren't too expensive. But I'll have to build a garage around the lift so "peripherals" (like walls and a ceiling) might cost a little more, ha ha. I would be interested in your thoughts about lift design and choices.

  • @fusionstar916 Thanks for the tip but I think the next 'lifting tool' I get will be a lift if I can swing it.

  • @fusionstar916 Thanks for the tip but I think the next 'lifting tool' I get will be a lift if I can swing it.

  • Plasitc crap!

  • good job eric

  • viva the elvas

  • Looking forward to parts 2 - 4. Will come in handy if our Eric decides to keep his '02 Focus. I also second that comment on the shop wall clock. Awesome.

  • Hi Eric, I went ahead and bought the whole vid, my wife drives a 2005 focus, and the big make over on the focus was 2006 or 2007? Anyway, hers is much the same as the 2002 in the vid. Purchase was flawless, only took 5 min to download over 3/4 gig, but man, I hope I don't need to change the clutch anytime soon. Props to you for including EVERY STEP, including the not so by the book steps. Thanks again!

  • @MrJKCampione Thank you! I'm glad to hear the download time was in that range and that you liked the video, makes my day really.

  • They make trox bits rated for impact use. I'm not sure how safe using those chrome bit sockets on an impact is.

  • @hateercenor You are correct but it's what I had at the time.

  • Someone told me that ford makes a bad maf sensor anybody know if it's true

  • @SuperchargedMustang5 I'm not sure, but I can tell you I have owned 5 ford's and ALL of them have needed three things, a starter, a mass air sensor, and outer tie-rod ends.

  • @MrJKCampione ive owned ford most of life first truck we bought was a chevy it was a very good truck but itr was only getting about 10mpg sold it and got a cavileer and it needed an en gine rebuild at 75k miles and a tranny at 103k. my grandpa gave me his 89f150 350k never needed work except he shreded 2 and 4 gears its on its 3 alt. and i have a ford escape it just got an alt put in at 95k miles and now it needs minor tranny work at 106k miles. got an f250 7.3 only needed struts which my uncle

  • @MrJKCampione helped me replace a few weeks ago. i would drive chevy again but ive had better luck with ford

  • I LOVE YOUR SHOP CLOCK!!!!!!

  • @deeman52586 Yea it's been with me a long time and is still 'kickin'.

  • You realy need a lifter because at 25:09 to me is realy scared how the car is moving.

  • 5:17 God I hate plastic clips or tabs. I used to fuss with them and try and save them; not anymore. I bust those suckers and get in with it, and if they're truly needed when reassembling, it's zip ties and screws to the rescue!

  • I am definitely still buying this. You deserve the 6 bucks! :]!

  • @MisterMattyMo Thank you, I'll take all the help I can get.

  • why do you never work on toyotas? :/ They are my favorite

  • @adriannnf Actually I can think of at least 2 videos that I've done working on Toyotas.

  • GG! Looking forward for the rest!

  • Very helpfull video Eric. Thank you :D.

  • great video

  • the new shop is huge

  • @shingleful Yea I love it.

  • so much easier on a Honda lol

  • @TRSERased Indeed

  • Hey Eric, I've done a few of these(focus) myself, instead of messing around with the plastic shroud on the gearbox, I just let the fluid drain out when i pop the drive shafts out. I have a couple of spare inner cv joints that i put back into the gearbox to stop them draining :)

I dont go near the axle nut, I find just undoing the pinch bolt on the ball joint, splitting it and pulling the whole hub assemble outwards(being careful not to dislocate the inner cv joint) is sufficient. :)

  • @bourkeygx Thing about that is that you don't often get all the fluid out and when you go to remove/replace the trans you can end up making a big mess as a result. Of course if you have a lift and a trans jack that's not really a problem. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks Eric! I'm probably going to buy the video as well anyway though because my girlfriend might be getting a Ford Focus soon!

  • @AverageCarMods Please do, good luck with the car, it's not too bad to drive in my opinion.

  • Is that an elvis clock on the wall behind you? the thing with legs moving back and fourth? If so can you show it closer it looks awesome.

  • @YotaFan1 He shows it up close in his garage move in video.

  • @YotaFan1 yeah, it is. he moved it from his old shop. IIRC, it was a valentines day gift from someone.

  • @YotaFan1 just look into his Old video. He showed it when he was moving into this new place. when i said Old its no more than 5 months ago.

  • With the car up that high on stands at the front, I'd be inclined to put some kind of chocks behind the rear wheels in case of brake failure etc.
