Taichi Saotome is an onnagata, a man that specializes in playing women's roles. While the form of theater he's in, taishu engeki, doesn't technically require men to play female roles (unlike kabuki, which is strictly men only), it's still pretty common.

Historically, Japanese theatrical arts such as noh, kabuki, or bunraku were restricted to men only, so while a woman can play this role, it's not considered strange at all for a man to do it instead. Besides, onnagata are incredibly popular.
