i gotta admit i played earthbound i loved it.. and replayed it but its definitely not even close to being number 1!! your all a bunch of kids cause thats what the game is a childs RPG..
I really like this list, and I have a suggestion if you haven't played it: Terranigma. I just finished it, after not knowing it existed, and is now easily one of my favorite games. Go find an emulator or something and play it.
I definitely agree with the games on this list (played them all), and I agree FF6 is the best....but the omission of Chrono Trigger is a tragedy. I'd swap Gaia for CT.
high five for putting Seiken Densetsu 3 on this list!! shame i only discovered it 2 or so years ago,but it's superior to the original in my opinion.the class system gives this game soooo much replay value it's insane! but still,Chrono Trigger deserves to be on this list.i dunno about Illusion of Gaia as i never played myself.i'll rearrange these 5 with some alteration.
@cronochos that's pretty close i guess.i still haven't finished Earthbound(in the middle of it).but have you played Seiken Densetsu 3?you might change your mind after you do.that said i agree with the top 3
@cronochos nah, this is a japan exclusive release.i've only been able to play it because a crew of people translated a rom version of it,so it's only playable on an emulator.but it's worth it,definitely worth trying out:)
great review, if i had to rank them i go 1. Seiken Densetsu 3 2. Chrono Trigger 3. Final Fantasy 6 4. Secret of Mana 5. Final Fantasy 3 6. Lufia 7. Final Fantasy 4 8. Final Fantasy 5 9. Terranigma 10. Illusion of Gaia
@BlackGwarDeath666 Thats debatable...since it is so similar to other action rpgs on the SNES. And FFVI is good, but not as good as FFIV and isnt quite in the top 5 in my opinion...
@BlackGwarDeath666 FF6 is great man, but I just felt like FF4 was too insane...and it is more nostalgic to me, which plays a factor. Honestly, a year from now my top 5 may change, but I thought the story and gameplay was better on FF4...
@GalsiaDonovan thats kool i can understand that cause thats why i always think that 6 will be my fav just cause of nostalgia and everything i mean it was the first RPG i beat and i was about 9 i think anyways yeah i can understand where you coming from i guess in 4 "SPOILERS" 4 had a couple of people you played as die and you find out the the "main bad guy" is cecil brother and stuff i thought 6 was good though with the world of ruin and having the option of getting everyone back plus extras
Nice list! The SNES has some of the best games I've played. My list would include most of the games you picked. 5, 4, and 3 would be in no particular order: Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana, and Earthbound. 2 is Final Fantasy VI, and 1 is Chrono Trigger. I've played through CT more times than I can count.
Of course most of you probably know that the US game Final Fantasy III is really Final Fantasy VI, but in case some readers didn't know, I'm throwing it out there.
It's nice to hear a simple breakdown of why a game is good. Critics tend to be too pretentious to taken seriously, and a simple " i like it or hate it" doesn't give you much to work with. This video was the perfect balance. Lol, and I also found myself asking where chrono trigger was, but thats just my opinion.
1: Secrets of Evermore (Incredibly unique plot, very fresh graphics, incredible soundtrack, gameplay that was simple, and most of all, familiar environments influenced by historical eras on Earth, which makes it seem far more unique than the cliche attempt of Square in re-making "Gaia," and also whoops Square's cliche "SAVE THE WORLD" plot line) In case you are wondering why I chose SoE...
Earthbound is the most overrated and biggest piece of shit I have ever played on a Nes and Snes. Like seriously, the game's story is just a collection of 90's cliches and silly humor so for anybody that is not into that crap they are definitely going to hate the story.
This game's gameplay is worse than playing the first Dragon Quest for the Nes, it's a torture. At least DQ has good music, the only people that likes Earthbound are Nintendo fanboys that have only played like 3 rpg in their life.
#5 and #2 are awesome, only missed Chrono Trigger here.
I've played a few Final Fantasy games, but they've never really captivated me to the fullest.
My favourite RPG series of all time is Suikoden for the Playstation (and that's the only Playstation games I play). Now that's an unforgettable series of games.
I am twelve, and I haven't played any of those games because when I was growing up, I loved the GBA amd the DS. Those are my two systems right there. I didn't have the NES or the SNES. I can't go on Ebay and pay $300 for an SNES and an Earthbound cart.
I have a comment for you: where is Earthbound Zero? The original Earthbound? Mother 3? At least one of them have to be near 5. I have never played any of them ( except Mother 3, but I have hardly passed the first fight) but i have seen playthroughs, and they seemed amazing.
1. Seiken Motherfucking Densetsu III! Play through this game with two other people and I promise you'll all have a deeper bond with each other after it's over lol Dam this game was, no IS the shit!!!
Good list, this reminded me I want to play SD3 since I liked Secret of Mana. I'm thinking of my own top 5 list and that would consist of all Squaresoft RPGs! Yours has more variety.
All good games, but you obviously didn't play Chrono Trigger. Put Chrono Trigger at #1 and push everything else back one place, and the list would be pretty solid.
nice top 5 rpg games vid, those are my favs as well however some don't make my list of top 5 rpg's but that's me. I also just want to say Seiken Densetsu (I believe that's how you spell it, could be wrong) was the second game to Secret of Mana, it was released as Seiken Densetsu 3 first, however they also released it later on either for the super nintendo or super famicom I forget which one and they called it Secret of mana 2. I also love that game there are just so manyrpgsoutthereitshardtopick
@Spyro5972 Don't get me wrong, I fully support Chrono Trigger as a classic; I run through it all the time. My point is that compared to other SNES RPGs, I just don't think it's in the top five. Personally, I feel that a lot of people of my generation got started on RPGs with CT and that's why it's given such high marks.
CT did a lot of things well, it also did a lot of things that were just decent (difficulty, double/triple techs, character development).
@Jeidara93 That's the first thing I thought... wtf FFIV over Chrono Trigger? i still Miss Lufia II instead of Mario RPG but well... is just an opinion. My top 5 is Nº5 FFVI , Nº 4 Terranigma , Nº3 Earthbound (am i the only one that despite the graphics thought it was an amazing game?) Nº2 Lufia II and of course Nº1 Chrono Trigger!
A pretty good list, here's my two cents for anyone who cares (no one).
-I like FFIV over VI but probably the only person that does.
-I applaud you for choosing SD3 over SoM.
-I would have substituted IoG, for something probably ToP or Lufia.
-I would have substituted BoF II or Paladin's Quest (the challenge) for SMB: RPG.
-I salute you for not putting Chrono Trigger because while a great game, I feel that it's given too much praise. I could get into more detail but alas, character limitations.
@AceAileron thanks a lot for this post. all the games you listed that you would have substituted for the ones i gave are excellent games. the main reason why i didnt put CT on my list is because it, while a fantastic game, didnt really impact me as much as these others and i too believe that it's given far too much praise. again, thanks for the quality comment!
@Kanamit Not a problem. The games you listed are excellent; I love Illusion of Gaia (and on that note, Soul Blazer) but if I'm thinking purely RPGs, I wouldn't include them but totally understand why you did - it's really more of how you define their genre.
I agree with you 100% on Chrono Trigger. It was an amazing game but I don't know if it was because of it's simplicity or the lack of dialogue killed what could have been an amazing story, it simply didn't move me like Square's other RPGs.

@Lordlt82 Ah yes, nothing screams "take my opinion seriously" like resorting to an Abusive ad hominem.
Please, tell me (or anyone else for that matter) exactly WHY Chrono Trigger should be in the top five? Yes, it's a great game but is it a top five RPG on the SNES? Perhaps, but I've never met anyone who could really justify why it's such an amazing game.
Granted, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I just have a hard time agreeing when there are so many great titles on the SNES platform.
@AceAileron game play alone would be enough to end this it was ground breaking also graphics were not good as most but i would rate them 7-8 at the time the story i give a 9 i think the only game i ever gave a ten was super mario rpg but this is my opinion i'll be a man about this and say sorry for the fact on this subject the age group on this subject is old enough to really now gaming rather than rate cod a ten or 99%
@AceAileron HCBailly and I like FFIV over VI, but I only like it a HAIR better because of the perfect blend of story, character development, music and an epic quest.
@Duorsa Thanks for that - it's good to see people agree with me on that front, especially two guys who are as well known as you for game replays.
FFIV has the character development, the class diversity, and I feel flows better. Where I feel FFVI really took a dive was in the WoR: the strong story, the build up to a climax, everything pretty much vanished. Instead, we're given a "let's put together the o'l gang, not talk about the past year or develop relationships - let's just get Kefka" story.
@AceAileron Oh, don't flatter me lol, I'm no where near HCBailly's calibur. But yes, I agree, however I like the atmosphere in VI better, as it took a bold move from the traditional medieval setting to a steampunk, technological setting. The music for me goes to six overall, however FFIV put it all together so nicely and imo better than FFVI that it puts them neck to neck for me. Gameplay is about equal for both of them. Still for an overall game, I think IV wins by a hair.
@Duorsa HA! Flattery aside, I've familar with both of your work but I digress.
I fully agree with the "steampunk, technological setting" because it explains things like Airships better. I also like how they explain that technology was more advanced until the War of Magi but it's coming back, hence Narshe; in FFIV it's almost out of place (especially the Big Whale). Where I think FFVI fell - outside of what I've mentioned - is the lack of challenge. There were no "hard bosses" like FFIV had.
@AceAileron I thought FFVI had a few mildly difficult bosses if you were put in a tight spot with bad stats, like the tentacles when you recruit Edgar for an example. But overall I agree. I think the Big Whale was meant to be a hidden ancient masterpiece, that when uncovered shows how advanced the gods and "things" that made it were.
@Duorsa That's true - in a few situations a boss could be hard (coming across the Storm Dragon, Doom Gaze, etc) but when compared to Bahamut, Odin, Wyvern, Oogopgo, et.al. they just don't stack up. Let's faced it: Zeromus > Kefka.
The Whale, The Serpent Trench, even the Tower of Bab-Il were supposed to be created by the Lunarians (or at least they gave humans the blue prints) which explained how they got there, they just didn't seem to fit as well as the technological aspects did in VI.
@AceAileron in difficulty, yes (Zeromus>Kefka), although I didn't find either that challenging. However as a boss in general, not a chance, imo its easily Zeromus<Kefka. But Zeromus did have epic, heartpounding music for the fight.
@Duorsa Agreed. I will, however, say that Zernomus in FFIV for the PSX was a bit of a challenge. Of course, it might have been I was having an off day - I ought to go through it again and see if that's still the case.
Kefka might be the coolest villain of all time. I mean, he was really nothing but a complete psycho. Didn't like Doma? Poison. Didn't like Leo? Stabbin'. Didn't like Ghestal? Statue blast. I bet o'l Cid felt pretty bad for turning Keftka into such a whacko. Oh, and the laugh.
i think ur 4th best should be replaced with final fantasy 6. graphics were way better. story too. but in the end, it's all up to individual's interest
Hey, I'm a 3D RPG player and I have never tried a 2D RPG. Should I try Final Fantasy VI? And where can I get this game? (I am aware of ROMs, but I wanna buy my games.)
my number one rpg game from snes is ultimatly chronotrigger just to awesome great gameplay nice graffics for its time great story..i wished they´d used the the multi-tech attacksystem also in other rpgames it´s always fun when u can attack with all your charackters at ones ^^
I don't think I could narrow it down to just 5 I have to admit. I liked ones like Paladin Quest, Soul Blazer, Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire, as well as ones you mentioned as well.
OMG YES WINNER FFVi is my favoritest game of all time im glad someone shares my love :D i can play this game anywerre anytime its so well done its visually awsome in its own snes sort of way and the fighting and characters are the best ive had in any rpg so ya good on ya
@Kanamit lol u do too!... and the word of the day is-let's see what i have to type "turdburger" use this in a sentence . people who like capsha are turdburgers
@SpaceyAtariQueen if i do, i never set it to be that way and im not even exactly sure how to remove it. i kind of glanced through the video settings and didnt see it so i was like ah screw this lol

Illusion of Gaia sounds interesting. Is it out on the Virtual Console?
If you see this post again, it's only because I'm having issues with the post button at the moment.

@Jeidara93 I completely agree. I disagree with AceAileron that it's praised too much: a great game is a great game. Classics never die.
Spyro5972 5 months ago
@Spyro5972 The video is ok but you do make a good point
Jeidara93 5 months ago
@Spyro5972 Don't get me wrong, I fully support Chrono Trigger as a classic; I run through it all the time. My point is that compared to other SNES RPGs, I just don't think it's in the top five. Personally, I feel that a lot of people of my generation got started on RPGs with CT and that's why it's given such high marks.
CT did a lot of things well, it also did a lot of things that were just decent (difficulty, double/triple techs, character development).

@Jeidara93 Yeah were is Chrono Triggor?!

Jeidara93 3 months ago

AceAileron 5 months ago 6
@AceAileron thanks a lot for this post. all the games you listed that you would have substituted for the ones i gave are excellent games. the main reason why i didnt put CT on my list is because it, while a fantastic game, didnt really impact me as much as these others and i too believe that it's given far too much praise. again, thanks for the quality comment!
Kanamit 5 months ago
@Kanamit Not a problem. The games you listed are excellent; I love Illusion of Gaia (and on that note, Soul Blazer) but if I'm thinking purely RPGs, I wouldn't include them but totally understand why you did - it's really more of how you define their genre.
I agree with you 100% on Chrono Trigger. It was an amazing game but I don't know if it was because of it's simplicity or the lack of dialogue killed what could have been an amazing story, it simply didn't move me like Square's other RPGs.

@AceAileron your a tard if you think chrono trigger is not top five
Lordlt82 5 months ago
@Lordlt82 Ah yes, nothing screams "take my opinion seriously" like resorting to an Abusive ad hominem.
Please, tell me (or anyone else for that matter) exactly WHY Chrono Trigger should be in the top five? Yes, it's a great game but is it a top five RPG on the SNES? Perhaps, but I've never met anyone who could really justify why it's such an amazing game.
Granted, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I just have a hard time agreeing when there are so many great titles on the SNES platform.
AceAileron 5 months ago
@AceAileron game play alone would be enough to end this it was ground breaking also graphics were not good as most but i would rate them 7-8 at the time the story i give a 9 i think the only game i ever gave a ten was super mario rpg but this is my opinion i'll be a man about this and say sorry for the fact on this subject the age group on this subject is old enough to really now gaming rather than rate cod a ten or 99%
Lordlt82 5 months ago
@AceAileron HCBailly and I like FFIV over VI, but I only like it a HAIR better because of the perfect blend of story, character development, music and an epic quest.
Duorsa 4 months ago
@Duorsa Thanks for that - it's good to see people agree with me on that front, especially two guys who are as well known as you for game replays.
FFIV has the character development, the class diversity, and I feel flows better. Where I feel FFVI really took a dive was in the WoR: the strong story, the build up to a climax, everything pretty much vanished. Instead, we're given a "let's put together the o'l gang, not talk about the past year or develop relationships - let's just get Kefka" story.
AceAileron 4 months ago
@AceAileron Oh, don't flatter me lol, I'm no where near HCBailly's calibur. But yes, I agree, however I like the atmosphere in VI better, as it took a bold move from the traditional medieval setting to a steampunk, technological setting. The music for me goes to six overall, however FFIV put it all together so nicely and imo better than FFVI that it puts them neck to neck for me. Gameplay is about equal for both of them. Still for an overall game, I think IV wins by a hair.
Duorsa 4 months ago
AceAileron 4 months ago
@AceAileron I thought FFVI had a few mildly difficult bosses if you were put in a tight spot with bad stats, like the tentacles when you recruit Edgar for an example. But overall I agree. I think the Big Whale was meant to be a hidden ancient masterpiece, that when uncovered shows how advanced the gods and "things" that made it were.
Duorsa 4 months ago
@Duorsa That's true - in a few situations a boss could be hard (coming across the Storm Dragon, Doom Gaze, etc) but when compared to Bahamut, Odin, Wyvern, Oogopgo, et.al. they just don't stack up. Let's faced it: Zeromus > Kefka.
The Whale, The Serpent Trench, even the Tower of Bab-Il were supposed to be created by the Lunarians (or at least they gave humans the blue prints) which explained how they got there, they just didn't seem to fit as well as the technological aspects did in VI.
AceAileron 4 months ago
@AceAileron in difficulty, yes (Zeromus>Kefka), although I didn't find either that challenging. However as a boss in general, not a chance, imo its easily Zeromus<Kefka. But Zeromus did have epic, heartpounding music for the fight.
Duorsa 4 months ago
@Duorsa Agreed. I will, however, say that Zernomus in FFIV for the PSX was a bit of a challenge. Of course, it might have been I was having an off day - I ought to go through it again and see if that's still the case.
Kefka might be the coolest villain of all time. I mean, he was really nothing but a complete psycho. Didn't like Doma? Poison. Didn't like Leo? Stabbin'. Didn't like Ghestal? Statue blast. I bet o'l Cid felt pretty bad for turning Keftka into such a whacko. Oh, and the laugh.

I know people keep saying it, but you can't have a top 10 RPG list for Snes, or even all time without chrono trigger.
