  • Great video. Thanks for posting it. Probably one of the clearest and best explanations on starting to get a good ATP on your horse. Actually used some of theses points on my heel horse the last couple of days and could see a big difference. Thanks again

  • Sorry, but, NO, you do not "look like a dressage rider". Every cue is painfully obvious..

  • If he doesn't say it in the video, in clinics he always says "anyone can let a horse go and them make them stop - I like to get them to where I can Make Them Go and then Let Them Stop! So the stop is always their reward."

  • Hi akanewe,

Calling it the First step might be an exaggeration. The first step would be simply learning to stop on contact or perhaps setting up the situation so that they enjoy stopping. I'm sure Les does both. This exercise is designed to help the horse understand the mechanics of the stop so that it slides correctly (i.e. not jamming its front legs into the ground). Additionally it works well because passing through the stop results in work, softly stopping in correct form equals relief

  • Its funny how most are telling one of the top trainers in the world how to do his job

  • Great comment Tye - couldn't have said it better myself.

  • HI costa, he's teaching the horse to slide, not just stop. Each part of what he is doing is a piece of the pie they need to slide. Soften the poll, soften the neck, lift the shoulders, drive the hind underneath and stop. It's low impact, he can do it a thousand times without strain to the horses body. What he's really teaching is how to slide a horse without having to run it down and slide it over and over.

  • @tye376 Hey thanks for explaining. I had no idea WTF he was talking about cos I have no knowledge of Western training, although I have seen reining and stuff. So this is like 1st step to that sliding they do when reining? I was about to lose a lot of respect for this man with this way of stopping a horse, thinking all this wasn't necessary to stop your horse.

  • Thanks -will watch again -I want to ge good and my horse wants me to be good !

  • Ok I didnt really get what he was doing.. Just bridling him up at the very end and then letting the horse go so he thinks you are letting him stop? Tell me if I'm wrong PLEASE

  • Collection Makes Them Look Pretty.. Whether You Like It Or Think It Is Wrong. Its What Counts In The Show Ring. Western Pleasure And Speed Events Is The Only Horse Show Competition That Requires You Horses Nose To Be Straight Down. When They Are Collected It Shows Control And Good HorsemenShip. And A Good Horse And Rider Doesnt Have To Have Slippery Shoes On To Make Them Slide. Reining Is All Control. If You Can Train Your Horse To Rein Like This Your A Great Rider.

  • I personally dont get the point of reining. Put slippery back shoes on the horse then watch them slide? ...whats the point?

  • It is a sensable approch and works well on many horses but that poor buckskin is WAY over collected. Their noses should be straight down, not touching their chest.

  • Rick Gore would have a field day with this video.

  • @ASLFrugalMom the day Rick Gore accomplishes what Les accomplished, he may say something.....

  • @cavalerodeldomingo Rick doesn't need to worry about that day because he has already done better things with his horse than this jack wagon.

  • @ASLFrugalMom

i see alot of blabla in his videos, but not really riding... i saw his video on the one rein stop, it's hilarious... he can only stop his horse by going to the fence... give me one link to a video that he rides his horse and shows me that i'm wrong. good luck!

  • @cavalerodeldomingo He isn't on YouTube to be your personal riding lesson. He isn't trying to teach anyone how to ride. He EXPLAINS different concepts and the reason people (like you) are so ignorant and stupid with horses. Rick has many videos of him riding while being completely in control of his horse. But of course you would know that, because you know everything.

  • @ASLFrugalMom first of all, i'm not saying anything about you and your horses, so don't judge me, you don't know me... If you are so sure about rick gore, if you have the 'critical eye' like he says, then I repeat give me one link! i'm just critical, I only take advise from someone who can prove me that he's better than me, but i only see alot of bla bla, what i can read in every book, or see in every training tape of a trainer. But they show me they can do it better.Rick doesn't.

  • @cavalerodeldomingo I was referring to you knowing everything about how to ride and the proper way to neglect, I mean train a horse. And especially your "barn witch" mentality. I'm not giving you advice and Rick is not giving you advice. If you see a lot of "blah blah" then you don't understand the point of what you're doing to your horse and should not own horses.

  • @ASLFrugalMom BTW i don't see any collection in his videos and see him lope on the wrong lead... If you think he can ride because he rides in a bosal, then look to the intro of the video, Les rides the bosal like a master... I'm just saying Rick gore his words sound nice, but you don't have to compare these two men. First be true to yourself, to use the words of david lee archer...

  • @cavalerodeldomingo Again, he doesn't ride to show. He rides to enjoy himself and his horses. Showing is cruel and he says that and explains that. Les rides the bosal with his horses mussel touching his chest. It's CRUEL and unnecessary! I understand collected and not pulling but tucked like that is ridiculous and idiotic. This is why Rick is a thousand times better with a horse than this monkey jockey. There is no need for comparison you're right about that.

  • @ASLFrugalMom Showing isn't cruel, the people who show horses CAN be cruel. Some horses need, in the beginning to be tucked in more, to give their back then they understand and don't need to be tucked in that much. This horse in the video wasn't his. I'm just saying, did rick gore ever showed in anything with his horses? There are shows where he could show his skills, in competition with other people, doen't need to be reining, cowhorse but something like mustang makeover? project cowboy?

  • @cavalerodeldomingo Does this man know how to give to pressure? Look at how long that poor horse is tucked. Rick doesn't need to show people how great he is. People who show off are people who think they know what they are doing and have the need to feel higher than someone else. "Look what I can do with my horse, Look how much pain my horse is in, I can do it better" I'm going to stay home and maintain a good relationship with my horse who trusts me. I feel for your horse.

  • @ASLFrugalMom you know you actually sounding like rick gore? if Les couldn't give to pressure the horse wouldn't keep his head there, he would fight back... A show is a new experience for you and your horse, of course there is competition, and yes there are people who want to show off, but there are alot of people there just for having fun, and want to help people! have you ever been to a show? just go once, you don't need to go with your horse, as a spectator...

  • @cavalerodeldomingo The horse doesn't fight back because he's being told to hold his head there. It doesn't need to be there is my point! And even if he did fight back I guarantee Les would say, hold the pressure until he gives in right? That horse is doing everything that man asks and is still punished. That's the show world and the I'm so pretty idiocy "show-ers" "rein-ers" all the same.

  • @ASLFrugalMom i Think we could go on for this like hours... the most important thing is that you're happy and your horse is happy!

  • @cavalerodeldomingo Same with yours... Unfortunately following Les' yanking and pulling isn't going to make your horse happy. It hurts. Just in case that "critical eye" of yours missed it. :-/

  • @ASLFrugalMom and BTW rick shows of in every video he's posting... everybody does it bad, except him... the critical eye!

  • @ASLFrugalMom if he shows results there, i rest my case. But for the cruel and unnecessary, ridiculous and idiotic, that was Rick's video on crossing the small bridge...

I'm still waiting for a link, but i'm sure you don't find any. Like Rick says himself, don't just trust on what you see, be critical, well if you were you wouldn't agree on everything he says. Don't have a tunnelvision, listen to other people, and analyse for yourself if it's good info or not.

  • @cavalerodeldomingo What would you do if you went for a ride and the only bridge where you were was that one. If you had practiced with your horse and he trusted you, you wouldn't have a problem with crossing it. As Rick didn't. There are plenty of links on Ricks page. Go find them for yourself. I'm not your glossary. You're the one who feels you need to be shown the truth not me.

  • @ASLFrugalMom Are you serious? so if i could choose, the possibility to brake a leg of my horse, or just going back from where i come from? easy choice... look again to the bridge video, at the end mr t doesn't pay any attention to him, he almost fell off, thank god it was at the end of the bridge... You're missing the point, i've looked to all his videos, can't find any, that's why i ask you to show me one to prove me i'm wrong...

  • @cavalerodeldomingo If you were stuck and didn't have the choice to go back or any where else. He wasn't doing that for fun. He was saying it's good to have your horse do this IF you ever absolutely needed to. I don't care about proving you wrong. We watch Ricks videos because we WANT to learn. If you don't want to learn and take anything from what he's saying, then don't. If you can't do anything for yourself and find the information you need then again, why have a horse.

  • @ASLFrugalMom But don't come and say, it's because rick gore said so... analyse and use what is usefull, but don't follow the one eyed man just because he says it's that way but never really arrived at the destination you are going.

  • @cavalerodeldomingo

Don't think your making any head way convincing her! Good luck.

  • Such a sensible approach, and it works.

  • Poor, poor horses! :-(

  • Great stuff here.
