You should really get some recordings of choirs singing in baroque. Listen to them for hours. Listen to how the human voice phrases baroque melody in the intended style. Right now you are only playing a homogeneous string of notes.
a piece ofmusic is like a sentence you have to have commas and periods and use of vocabulary and things like that. this is like a run on sentence. its just notes: ta ta ta ta ta at a ta ta ta ta but u have to add swells and hold notes longer and get your message across.
It's not too fast. These are perfectly good, natural, organic tempi. You do rush on occasion, however, most noticeably in the prelude starting at about 0:58. Also, in the fugue's theme, you tend to rush ever so slightly in the broken sixths. To make it as brilliant and crystal clear as it needs to be, you'll have to tend to a huge number of little details that I can't all list here. You're off to a really good start, but please don't think you're even halfway there yet.
you're rushing it. I had to stop it at like 1' 52" cuz it does sound like noise.
There's a distinct difference between eighths, sixteenths, and staccato notes. Play the page. Don't rush. (I don't see why people feel a need to rush through the piece as fast as they possibly can just because they can...)
mmmm good playing, but not the best you could i feel,, i play this piece too, and think the prelude needs to be much lighter, and maybe needs a bit of polishing up, try practising hand seperatley in different patterns, it does miracles...it helped me.like the feel of the fugue, well dont
The prelude was nice although I prefer to hold the eighth notes a bit longer. It sounded stacoto. Also it sped up in the middle a bit. The fugue was also nice, but some notes were missed. Be sure to have your two hands exactly together. Good performance.
He's playing at a fine speed. It's mostly the fault of the piano, this music was not meant for it. Furthermore, there is a big difference between performing and playing--what is enjoyable to the audience and what is enjoyable to the hands and mind of the performer are rarely the same tempo; and while a good performer should accommodate his audience, saying that this is merely pushing buttons and suggesting that music has not been made is beyond a gross understatement--it's absurd.
i liked how the piece started out in the beginning and your interpretation wasn't so bad either, i don't know what these others are saying about "such a mess" but i'd like it better if your right hand didn't staccato (measure 9 for ex.); make it more legato...and i was able to hear all the 3 voices in the fugue too...great job!!
I have posted a video response and hopefully it will help. It is very easy to go out of control with the tempo specially with Bach. What I normally do is to take it in a speed wherein I can play all of the voices with perfect ease. I also practice the voices seperately with dynamic practices (meaning practicing one voice fortissimo while the other voices are in pianissimo) then I switch from one voice to another making sure I have perfect control of each one of them.
you should work your hands one and one... you will play it better!! And use a metronome!! Do it in 56 and do it quickly until 86 I think!! (I•, black with a point, i don't know how to say it in english...)
Ok, so its not perfect. You know that. However, I can see a harpsichord when I shut my eyes during the prelude, and I like the bouncy spirit of the fugue. Not all music is intended to be played perfectly at the expense of not playing it at all. Loved it - keep it up.
you need a metronome.....shameful! haha im just teasing, but seriously use a metronome at whatever tempo is necessary for you to play every single note cleanly, and once you are able to do that you will find it very easy to scale up and play a perfect, clean performance. clearly you are capable, knuckle down and USE THE METRONOME, i know its a bitch but DO IT!
This performance is a mess - which is a shame as your obviously a reasonable player. Slow down - evidently you're not a good enough player to play this quickly. Within the first few bars you are already messing up. The tempo is slowing when your finding it tricky - so slow down a bit. Not all the notes are sounding as clearly as they should either.
like with many others, we find the limitation residing in the LEFT hand. This piece is played slightly too fast, considering the lacking technique of the left hand, but it is still a job well done - I'm not saying I could do it better :) And aaaah, the pedal. It always comes down to the use of pedal and I think this is a matter of personal preference and interpretation. Try to play it the way you think sounds best - and I think that's exactly what you did!
Great video! A difficult piece played at a fast tempo (as I belive Bach's music should be played). Also, the video quality itself is very good - the audio is in sync with the video and I can see your hands. 5 stars from me :-D
wow! you are very good! and the angle of the camera was perfect so that i could so both your hands AND the strings in the piano, i think this is the first video ive seen that has placed the camera there :)
Again you are very good!!! kudos!!! one day i want to be like you.
I agree with TGarzarel. I think it's important to state criticisms in a way that is obviously not rude. And critical comments like "Be sure your hands can play at the same speed!" without a simple "I liked your performance, but..." seems rather rude in my opinion. They might not have intended for it to be rude, but it's all about preception.
It's easy to misunderstand the intentions behind someone's comments here. Whether they are genuinely intended to help or criticize isn't obvious, let alone the credibility or skill level of the person making the comment.
Listen to what you play that's the only problem. The left hand has some problems. You'll should play it slowly and sing the left hand voice while you play the right hand. And then you 'll play it better...
we make comments to help the performers just bc we can. these ppl post their videos not to boast their genius and talents but to ask for comments or advices that can make them better pianists. and they also want to know how other people view them as pianists. this is pretty serious, and if u r here merely to enjoy the posts ppl make, u shouldnt come here bc that shows u dont understand what it feels like to be a pianist. so make comments. these ppl who post videos need comments.
These aren't discriminating comments. We're trying to help this pianist out by making suggestions on how to improve the piece. He plays very well (maybe a little fast in the fugue for my taste), but it's not perfect (and nothing ever is). Again, making suggestions on how to improve or what to practice will only help him to become a better pianist
lol...how come...how come wen ppl see these videos they JUST have to leave a discriminating comment or something that shows...say "o u didnt do this right" or wutever ....MAN it makes me mad
What the hell do you expect? A bunch of Glenn Goulds submitting videos onto MySpace? This is by comparison one of the best piano self-recordings on YouTube, and you can't bring yourself to say something encouraging about it.
i felt the tempo sounds off balance in the middle. i think u should use metronome :P .. well.. great job tho.. it seems like u have really good technique~~ and probably u learned piano for a long time, too.
do not try to play like glenn gould :P

and some notes in the fugue need to be held longer (for instance that A sharp in the right hand at 1:49

You aren't typing! Make music! This is just pushing buttons, and you are playing so damned fast it makes Bach sound like noise!
Shame on you!
So much talent, so little understanding of what you are playing!

Yes the fortepiano, the clavier that Bach composed for was lighter instrument with lighter action. Fast is correct.
