he make sounds like you need 10 years of college degree for this job...in reality all it take is 200 bucks rental equipment to grind the shit to where ever you need to be..
One more thing not mentioned in this video is the legal necessity and expense having the area around the stump marked for undergound utilities. In Illinois the stump removal contractor has to mark the stump with white paint or flags; call the locator service and then wait 2 days for the area to be located. That takes time and time is money. I don't always call locators, but more and more you have to. $10,000 fine if you don't.
Not often do I cut a tall stump down close to the ground. I can grind out a three foot tall stump faster than I can get my chain saw going. Sometimes stumps have metal in them and tearing up a saw is more expensive that grinding out the stump. On top of that you have a big and heavy piece of wood to deal with. The chips are easier to work with. A true professional tree man won't leave a stump high. The biggest stump I ever ground out was a cottonwood 3 feet high and 18 feet across.
Tree Services know better than leaving stumps up high! but homeowners don't, I always cut them down, if their too tall. Cutting them down, means less mulch that the homeowner will have to clean up, and less grinding for me. Grinding a stump when not cut low to the ground, will accumulate more mulch, and can effect grinding dept! and cost the customer more for the stump!!!
@StumpAway I have a stump ave width of 40 inch's, thinking of hiring some here in So California. What is the average price for grinding this stump. I don't want to get ripped off. Thank You
I've been grinding tree stumps for 15 years and it's been 14 years since I measured a stump. I look at the stump estimate what it's going to take to do the job and tell my customer what it costs. Every job is different: some have more roots, some are cut off higher, some wood is easier and most important for some customers I have to drive further to do the job. I consider it all, but minimum is $100.00 for the first stump. I do bring a $40,000.00 machine and $25,000.00 truck to the job.
Same here!!! I don't measure either, I give an estimate basted on the job. But I have a minimum charge too, and on land clearing jobs, I charge by the hour.
It depends on the size of the stump, number of stumps, and access, etc... Some do it by the inch, or some just come out and give an estimate, which is better than giving prices over the phone, and then changing it when they get there, I always come out and look, then you know what needs to be done! And most stump grinders will have a minimum charge on all jobs.
Thanks a lot
