@mattyb1500 About 14 mph without much effort. 17-18 mph will some effort and around 21 mph with considerable effort on the flats. A little slower than my road bikes and my "fast" two wheel recumbents.
There are a few 'bents that are changing that reputation as bad climbers. The Carbent, Bacchetta Carbon Aero 2.0 and Rans X-Stream are all great climbers, in fact a RAAM team ripped it up this year on the X-Streams. Traffic safety is always hotly debated, but with a highracer you should have almost the same visibility as a road bike. A trike won't fly up a hill, but the advantage is you can always just stop and rest as long as you'd like, then easily start up the hill again.
Will do.. .I dont get up that way too often... although my wife has an uncle who lives up there in El Dorado Hills. Maybe some day.
So... you left us with a cliffhanger at the end of your video with that comment about coming up on a family having a picnic in the middle of the trail! I hope no one got hit or hurt!
Nope, we stopped in time and all was well. Of course, I can't comment on what might have happened when the next group of riders came screaming down the hill :)
I love these trikes big fan ....sooo much fun to ride...Just wanted to point something out is it just me or does this guy whos making this vid look like jim carey lol check out the end decide for youself!
I have a thought as to your camera quitting. If it has a hard drive in it, it might have a shake protector. My JVC has one. It pauses the camera and "clamps" the drive head if it senses too much vibration.
Also, I found out what a Drill Thrall (2 words) is. Haha!
That's quite a long hill. I ride my trike up and down a lot of hills, but I think they are all shorter than that one, although many are steeper. Usually I can get from the top to the bottom in under a minute. I've only measured my speed one time, and got over 33 mph on a downhill.
Looks like a blast!, and since I am building a recumbent, and never ridden one its a good learning video! It reminds me more of flying close to the ground in my hanglider as opposed to racing in my road bike..
Your camera worked well, and was probably more realistic than getting the picture smoothed out..
That's a perfect analogy. You do really get the feeling of flying on those long downhills. Good luck with your recumbent project! You'll have to post a video of it once you're done.
thought of getting one of those car mounted steadycams and modding it to fit? superb video, im searching now for recumbents but are hard to get in the uk
those ice trikes are expensive for us poor welsh cave dwellers! cruzbike for me this year I think and a big saiving pot
you can get a in-car mounted steadycam type attachment for fairly cheap but youd have to do a little modding to get it to fit, the body mounted ones are fairly expensive though im just finishing my vest for mounting a spring loaded arm that will take a camera as well as something a little more core if you look at my vids :)
Thanks very much for the kind words! The ride up the hill is a real workout! We started at the bottom and the video is us on the way back down. In the summer, they have a snack bar at the lake so you can get a drink or a snow cone when it gets really warm.
Great video!
Now I want a TRIKE!
No, I want THREE TRIKES!!!! NOW!!!!

LOL! I hate to say it, but they're as much fun to ride as they look like they'd be in the videos :)

what kinda speed you get on flat without the downhill bit?

@mattyb1500 Don't remember my max speed on that ride, but I've been up to 45mph going downhill. My brother topped 50mph.
theaesthetics 1 year ago
@theaesthetics i race these things in endurance, topped 48mph at the end of a flat straight.
Richard3984 1 year ago
@Richard3984 Wow, you're a monster. 48mph on a flat is faster than I can manage on a lowracer. :)

you did not ring your bell when you passed the mom & kid walking.

Nice ride--down. What keeps me away from a bent, besides traffic safety, are the uphills.

How much do these kind of bikes cost? Thanks for the vid by the way looks like a blast!!
caseybavier 2 years ago
Hi Casey,
The GT3's run about $2,600, but trikes can be had for about $1,000.

put a nose cone on that bet it would hit 35-39 easy. or a different helmet on you as well. less drag.

Looks like a great trail to ride!
I love to ride my trike on the trails down here in Southern Cal... someday it would be fun to come up there and try the Folsom trail too!
dregerclock 2 years ago
I watched the video of your trail down there. It looks really nice! If you're going to be in the area, let me know and we can arrange a ride :)

Thanks very much for the help! Excuse my spelling on "Drill Thrall". It's been a long time since I've been to Triskelion ;)

A family having a picnic in the middle of the road? That sounds like something I would see here in Taiwan!
taiwan1895 3 years ago
You have to get yourself a bike with big nobby tires, Jim. Then you can roll right over those pesky trail blockers ;)

The flags can be found by doing a Google search for "Catrike Flags". It's the first hit.

Inspired Cycle Engineering is a great trike company in the UK. I'd love a steady cam for stuff like this!

Very Cool. You Be cruising.
Man Oh Man. That looks like great fun.
The tail end of your video is a riot.
One question though. Did you have to ride back to the top?
