  • It has been years since I tried fly fishing last, and after a few hours I remembered why i left. I was getting so frustrated at not being able to cast with any distance and kept piling my line on the water. your videos helped address all my issues. Thank you and keep 'em coming.

  • Wow amazing instructions and by far the best videos I have seen so far on fly fishing. I am a beginner and just got my fly rod equipment. I am just about to start practicing my casts for the first time. My friend who got me into fly fishing recommended a Rio sink tip 6wt line added to the leader to sink the fly. Will this require other techniques to cast using a sink tip? Should I learn to cast without the Rio line first? Where do I attach the Rio line and how long should it be??

  • good vid, but TERRIBLE quality video. Absolute best instruction coupled with positively worst video quality on youtube.

  • very informative. thankyou

  • Great set of videos! Thank you!

  • Superb instruction, thank you :)

  • Excellent videos, thanks so much for the clear information and pin pointing the common bad habits. Cant wait to get back out there and try again with all this new knowledge.

  • how fast should i retrive the line

  • Great video! Now I just have to go to the park and practice some more!

  • I'm from the East Coast of Canada, very advid flyfisherman and I'm not impressed by many here who are giving lessons but yours are very basic and clear so I just wanted to say thankyou for representing the skilled flyfishermen out there decently. (There are lots of us!)

  • Nice Video Tim,like the fact your demonstrating the roll cast in water. Only one thing, you didn't mention the two other methods of doing a proper roll cast which can be made completely left or right of the body and even done with a back handed technique. In most cases where a roll cast is truly required, you wouldn't be able to lift the rod as highly above you as you've shown in this demonstration. Ofcourse lower means less but in a true roll cast less is all we get.:)

  • Hey man! I'd just like to thank you for this great instructional! I searched youtube and you were by far the most informative and straight forward. I wrote down all the key tips for casting properly before I went out to try my new fly rod, and it helped so much! When I concentrated on everything you said and put it all together the cast just worked! Ive been fishing forever, just started fly fishing, thanks again for starting me off!

    Cheers,

    Phil

  • Been Fly casting for 22 years now and that series is by far the best I have seen. I am right handed with 4 pins in my shoulder and a recent surgery on my right hand. Always looking for tips form good casters. Well Done I am passing this on to the many novice anglers I know.

  • Hey great vid but when you cast the fly out there do you just let it sit there until you get a fish or do you have to work the fly somehow?

  • This guy is a professional instructor. He delivers the information nice and easy with clear examples of common mistakes. He is knowledgable too.

  • very informative! thanks so much for posting a great video!

  • Awesome videos! Thanks alot for putting these up! I gave myself a crash course on the water in fly fishing a few days ago and didn't have much success and now I see where my problems were coming from and how to fix them, thanks again!

  • Thank you for your Tips! I'm just learning. Your video's help me alot. Thanks!

  • I am an absolute beginner with fly fishing, but your videos have given me such confidence and understanding. They are so easy to follow and learn. Thank you so much for making these videos.

  • The best casting video's on Youtube, thank you!

  • wow Tim thx so much, i've been fishing since i was a young boy with spinning gear, i've always wanted to fly fish and i was bleesed enough to recieve a new fly rod a couple of weeks ago, after watching your vid's i think i am on the right track to catch my first fish on the rod, just one question, when using a wet fly,is it normal to use a weight to get it deeper in the water or should i just leave it the way it is? thx again great tips

  • If you are using a traditional "wet fly" you would fish it down and across the river without any additional weight. If you are fishing a nymph, we usually fish them upstream with weight allowing them to tumble back towards us dead drift. I hope that helps out.

  • @theslenderhab>>>>>>>>hey man i just add a lil bigger fly in front of my smaller fly and that acts as an anchor and you get a lil deeper and youll be surprised on how deep some flys get.....hope it helps but more ? ask your local fly shop owner those peeps are pretty cool.....thats where i learned everything......

  • Great videos guys. Keep it up.

  • just a question that i have!

i m a begginer and i bought all the necessery equipment to start fishing. when you attach the fly line to the reel, do you have to attach any other line before the fly line? or you attach the fly line as it is?

I m not talking about the leader. I before you tie the fly line to the reel.

(sorry if i confused you, but my english is not the best :p).

Thanks in advance, happy new year!

  • *Before you even tie the fly line to the reel.

    (i ment)

  • The first thing you need to attach to the reel is backing. Most trout set ups will hold 40-70 yards of 20lb backing. The backing is then attatched to the fly line. Finally the line is would onto the reel and a leader is attached

    Tim

  • And sorry to ask again.

Why is the backing necessary? I mean, will the line ever reach to the backing while fishing? Or it helps the fly line coming out of the reel faster?

  • The backing takes up space on the reel so the fly line is not held in such a tight loop. This results in less memory in the fly line. It makes the line last longer and if you do run into a big fish it offers a bumber.

    Tight Lines,

    Tim

  • Thanks again Tim!

    I really appreciate that!

  • Tim, you are a wonderful gentleman. I am 24, and from NJ, name is George, using my friends account currently, but I have been watching this, and learning VERY HIGHLY useful stuff. I thank you very much, for everything in your videos. I now can go out with my new Sage gear, with full confidence, in the advice that you've given me. :D

  • very helpful, i broke alot of rules before watching these 3 vids, ie: goin straight to the river lol. these techniques will help me heaps. accelerate to a stop!

  • these videos are great; I just got my rod and when i went to practice I didn't do all that bad!

  • fisrt tiem casting and i can cast 40 ft already, im a natural

    England out

  • its a ego boosting series....... make you think you can make it to the outdoor games lol..... great teaching

  • This 3 series video has been INVALUABLE !!

    Thankyou .....

  • As a videographer and a newbie to fly fishing, I would have filmed the roll cast from the side and from behind, as I think the mechanics of it are better represented from those angles. But aside from all that, this 3 part series has helped me a lot. Thank you.

  • This series is such a great resource. After flailing all season (my first attempt to learn fly fishing) I think I can make real progress now. Thanks so much.

  • great video collection! the shooting line part helped me out very much and your tips are clear and well taught. thanks you so much

  • Fantastic videos. Before I was get aches in my hand, and my line just landed at my feet. After watching your videos I could see where I was going wrong and how to cast properly.

I went out this evening to practice on my river and ended up with 3 fish!

Wouldn't have happened without your help. Many thanks!

  • These three videos were amazing! I just recently bought a Martin fly rod and reel and I just learned more in the 25 minutes that it took to watch your videos than I could have anywere else...thank you!

  • thanks thanks thanks this really helped me

  • Best tutorials by far on youtube....thanks Tim.

  • The sport of fly fishing is new to me but your help in understanding the basics was priceless. I have greatly improved with little practice and my confidence is growing each time I go out. Your instructing style is very comprehensive and easy to understand. Thanks for making an outstanding series of videos for guys like me!

  • very well made and easy to understand. thanks so much. Been having problems with wind knots. Is there a mechanical error in my backcast, ie bad timing etc?

  • Great package of videos

  • Tim great video and great teaching style. Your teaching style is inspirational. Only masters can teach. As you do.

  • I used to fly fish the Willamette, the Umpqua, the Siuslaw and the Santiam rivers in Oregon while I lived there. Watching these videos has me going out today to practice my casts! And I agree, the roll cast (and roll mend) is probably the cast I used most often.

An also If you golf, you have a head start on fly fishing because they are vary similar in the techniques.

    Go fish now.

  • i fish the umpqua every week =]

  • What is the music? It's wonderful.

  • Thanks so much for your outstanding videos. I watched all three. I've been spin casting as long as I can remember, dad started taking me fishing as a very young boy, but I've never learned to fly cast.

Now I have a week of vacation. I live on a trout stream in Southern Wisconsin (Black Earth Creek runs through my back yard). I'm off now to get myself a fly rod and some flies. You have inspired me.

    Thanks again, my friend!

  • YOU ARE ONE OF THE GREAT INSTRUCTOR
