It's clear it's not done to give any kind of criticism on a posted vid if it's one of their idols. Although it's narrowminded, I can't blame them.
I heard Ravel's version a hundred times, and it's insane to compare both versions. Because it has nothing to do with it. All I said was Zappa's band is giving a great performance, but Zappa's getting the credit. And he was not the composer nor arranger. But once again, I don't blame them.
@HenkDebal Who was the arranger with saxophones? Did he also give it jazz riffs? Remember Ravel was mainly an arranger of piano compositions. Pictures at an Exhibition anyone?
@i002492 "mainly an arranger of piano compositions"? With all due respect, you could not be more mistaken. Yes, Ravel did famously orchestrate "Pictures at an Exhibition" in 1922, and he did orchestrate many of his own piano works as well as some of Debussy's, but otherwise he was a promnent and fairly prolific composer in most genres.
I agree Zappa was a great musician, but why give the guy credit for this ? It's his band giving a great performance of the Bolero, all Zappa's doing is waving his want like Harry Potter on speed.
@HenkDebal good point. you should transpose the piece into something on par with this as well as play it while conducting. post the vid of you doing this and you may get a virtual highfive from me.
Why bother making comments when you clearly don't know what the full you're talking about. Have you even heard Ravel's version - this is not the same. Zappa has restored it for about 20 musicians - personally I don't think it's as good as Ravel's version but to say that Zappa is only waving his baton is just showing a complete ignorance of what a composer and an arranger (and even a conductor) does.
I have goosebumps listening to this-its just INCREDIBLE! If there's a heaven, it has one heck of an orchestra there-Zappa, Hendrix, Lennon, Joplin, Moon, Elvis etc etc.
Genius, come on now,,,,,,thats,,alitle bit of a understatement!!!!!!!!! I have never laghfed so hard. The only people crazyer, are Fred Shinder,or,David Beyren!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nono...i like almost everything of zappa but this is not good, the significant thing about Bolero of Ravel is not the damn melodic thing, is as Umberto Eco said "the rytm", and they covered up EVERYTHING excepet the rytm!! I think that it would be better if they kept the rytm and use rock stuff for the melodies...
@DiomedesTididax One of the great things of this arrangement lies, I believe, just in the fact that this over-famous rhythm is felt throughout, but not heard. It's like repainting the Mona Lisa but leaving out her smile: everybody knows what should be where, and therefore everybody makes their own mental fill in.
Hmmmm.......tam tadadadum tadadadum dum tam, etc. ;-)
Hear an excellent mix of this piece on Franks album "The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life" Live 1988 USA Release. Apparently the Ravel family kept it off the European release by refusing permission. Fun stuff. Thanks for posting.
@SKYVOLTAGE It wasn't the Ravel family. Ravel gave the rights to this piece to his gardener, who passed it down to his progeny. Whoever was riding herd on the rights to it (blame the French) made noises that resulted in it being omitted from some European releases. Ravel's grand-daughter (?) even went so far as to write a note to Zappa, praising the musical effort.

Frank Zappa allways had this BAAD habit to change everything he came about, into a cartoon of his own imagination.
But the fantasy conceres the real thing...allways!
You´re still the best bad guy, Frank!!

@HenkDebal there's a reason why people are chosen, and agreed upon, to be composers.
