I find this appalling.. anyway, as long as we can't stop eating crab and lobster, d Rick Stein said most humane way to kill them is to keep them in the fridge for sometime, so they goes in to sort of a sleep. Boil the water well and instantly take them out and put it in boiling water. In that way, they don't get much chance to feel anything. As they are small and cannot make sound, people disregard their pain in a barbaric way. Chefs should never encourage live animal cooking
@GTWHITEFEVER I know he WAS dead when he hit boiling water.. I made the general comment for both Crab and Lobster killing.. that way of freezing them and then quickly putting them in boiling water is believed to be the most humane way. Anyway, when Hugh was killing the Crab here did you see him struggling in pain? putting all his claws together and trying to stop Hugh? He feels great pain even when Hugh was trying to do it quicky. we humans even complain about the tiniest bug bite, don't we?

i don't know how much the thing was suffering, and it doesn't bother me particularly BUT you are by no means qualified to assert that it felt nothing- like the rest of us you know nothing about crab physiology.
indeed, i am fairly sure you couldn't even prove that other people have internal states (philosophically or physiologically).
I'm going to contradict myself here,I thought the way it was shown how to kill the live crab was simply barbaric(we did'nt need to see that,)but the food looked f*cking delicious, lol(I use fresh Crab from the bay near where I live on the west coast of England, which were killed that morning,I could'nt do it,..yes,I'm a coward) but for people who don't like the Brown meat?,it makes a FANTASTIC Pate with the correct ingredients, and perfect for an early evening snack on toast with garlic butter.

Oh I see!!! He doesn't like chickens which are grown purely for eating being mistreated, but thinks nothing of stabbing a crab to death. Any decent person who thought about killing it would have put it to sleep first (as with lobster) so that it dies painlessly. But he actually seemed to enjoy it
Sorry Hugh if you ever read this, but you're as big a hypocrite as the people that you keep taking self-righteous pot shots at!!! :(
Just drop the crab in boiling water when it's alive... It moves around for a bit, but it dies very quickly.
If you put it in the freezer first, then the sudden change in temperature can make it's legs fall off. Put the crab in lukewarm water for a minute before boiling it alive.
Best way to kill a grab is with a sawn-off shotgun. That is usually quick and works quite well with minimum suffering. Does make a bit of a mess though !!
This method is not used in Australia because it is easily done in-correctly. it is not hard to just stick a craab in a frezzer and makes sure there is no suffering
Of all people I figured you to want the most painfree method of disposing of animals. For Shellfish the best way is to place them in the frezzer for about 30 min till they are asleep then placing them directly in the boiling water and they are dead before they have a chance to wake up. It is a method that has been used in Australi for many many years I was taught this by my grand father when we caught Blue Swimmer Crabs on the lake infront of his place.

I kinda get the kick out of reading your response, it's like you are saving "boiling it alive" for the end.

Isn't there a better way to kill the crab? It looked as though there was some suffering on its part.
