It's clear how you lost claws. Wearing what you were, I'm assuming you were teleporting to your target then clawing them, then probably running. You did the most damage to someone, then ran. You went back in, teleported to your target, then the person you attacked before died by someone else. Whether you picked up the loot or not, you can't protect an item.
