In the UK aluminum and aluminium are interchangeable. You can even type alumi into your phone and it will come up as a suggestion. I hope this clears things up.(and yes I'm an American )

4 lines: All 0.4 inches apart

middle line for M: 1.5 inches

Outer lines for M: 0.8 inches from your middle line

Or if you want it in mm, then:

Beginning piece: 25.4mm by 6.8mm

4 lines: All 6.35mm apart

middle line for M: 3.4mm

Outer lines for M: 20.32mm from your middle line

oh... one other thing that i should REALLY point out and hope that you can clarify in the future...

it's best to not refer to the inner latch as any sort of "ball" (you use the phrase "single ball mechanism")... that's not really an accurate statement.

the latch is of a more basic, spring-loaded design and is not very ball shaped.

true, high-security padlocks (ones that cannot be shimmed) often have a "double ball mechanism" thus any reference to "ball" on other locks can confuse matters.

a couple of pointers i'll offer...

1. the best starting dimensions are 1" by 2½"

2. making ALL parts of your "M" rounded is also helpful

3. heh, i love your nicknames for the "Moose" and "Jockstrap" stages... i had never thought of those before. I may start using them when i demo this technique in lectures, etc. Naturally, i'll cite you as the source, Doc Falken. :-)

no...

1. padlocks vulnerable to this attack do not have any "ball" mechanism (and the one in the video is not properly referred to as a ball, either) they have simple latches

2. all master-brand combo locks (and all the knock off clones of them) do only latch on the left side as you face the dial

3. most padlocks with KEYS latch on BOTH sides... still possible to shim, but you have to do it on each side at more or less the same time. see my videos posted as a response for more details.

1. criminals rarely use this technique, it's more of a party trick or instructional method of demonstrating weak security.

2. nobody wants what is in your locker, most likely.

3. if you DO have expensive stuff or really good drugs in your locker, just use a proper lock and you're totally safe. why anyone would use a $4 lock to secure anything worth MORE than $4 is beyond me.

yes, sometimes it's possible... but they will wear out and bend or break eventually. even the higher-strength steel ones available in locksmith supply catalogs don't last forever.

but, when you break "professional" ones they're gone for good and you have to order more. when you break a home made one... well, you just drink another beer! =)
