yes, it was john who played bass 'cos paul played lead guitar (and the solo). john played the Fender VI six-strung bass (in reality a "baritone guitar") which has a unique tone that falls somewhere in between a normal 4-string bass and regular-tuned guitar, especially if its played rhythmically like a normal guitar as john did in this song.

from 1968 on, john or george would usually have to use the Fender VI and play bass if Paul was otherwise engaged playing another instrument other than his usual bass. you can see this same guitar in the "Hey Jude" video (George is on 6-string bass) and in the Let It Be movie when they play "The Long And Winding Road" (John plays it).

Actually it's Ringo who says that. Before recording this take of Helter Skelter they were working on a 22 minute version all day. They finally did this which ends on a very long fill and on the final note Ringo throws his sticks across the rooms and screams "I'VE GOT BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS"

He screamed it loud but if the microphones were only on the drums it would have sounded quieter. And I didn't realize that the recording a 22 minute version of the song, so really any one of the Beatles could have had blisters on their "fingas".
