@vinegaroon1 You are right - Toussaint wrote and produced (along with Marshall Sehorn), almost all of Dorsey's biggest hits - I have all his 45s and Allen Toussaint's name is on almost all of them. Both great New Orleans artists! ***DAVE♫♫♫♫DJ***
I grew up in New Orleans, and this wasn't on the radio in summer of 1968. 1969 was the great year for this song - Lee Dorsey and New Orleans are the best!
@Multi1628 Allen Toussaint was doing this song in the late Sixties as well. I was living in NOLA at the time also. I'm not sure, but Toussaint might have written it.
I feel so proud to be a portlander right now, he was born in new orleans and moved to my city at a young age, ive got myself a funk band, and we do it in his wake!
Dorsey, one of the greats! Have been collecting vinyl for 20 years and still have never found an original full length on LP by this man, well nothing in good shape under a hundred dollars. haha. It's worth it! Just don't have the dough. This cut has been on many comps for good reason, as I understand, that's the METERS playing under this cat? Or just partial? Toussaint's in the house here, right? Cheers..do you quickcapture too? I do similar posts of vinyl!
I heard this sung by Michael Doucet and his violin on our university radio station recently. Doucet's recording came out a couple of years ago. Can't find it on youtube--wish I could.
I wish I could rate this 1000 stars but I guess I'll settle for 5...they just don't make great music like this anymore! Makes me wish I would have grown up back then when funk was funk and soul was soul...
This was the cut, in the summer of 1968. That is, unless you had your nose in the air, thinking a country boy like Lee Dorsey couldn't handle his business. My boys and I knew better!!!!! Lee was all that!!
The BEastie Boys had a lyric in one song that said 'Everything I do is Funky like Lee Dorsey'. I always knew who Lee was, but somehow never knew this track and that the lyrics was a direct reference to a Dorsey SONG. Outstanding. i love it! Ya-Ya! ;)

The Treme cover is Dr. John fronting Dirty Dozon, but this is the original with The Meters!

I heard this on Treme on HBO this week when Davis was DJ'ing and I had to find it! Thanks for posting! Lee Dorsey has always been great!

@RainBeauRhyder It's awesome, but I think Treme played the Dirty Dozen Brass Band's version.

Did this version come before the Lou Donaldson version?

I can pretty much vouch for the fact that most northern soulers know who Lee Dorsey is; he's not a rare artist after all
