I think we've all been in Mike's position at one point or another, I'm talking that scene around 8:26... "Trouble?", "yeah, the worst kind with the worst people". Translation: The biggest urge and need to gamble, bigger than ever before. What a fucking degenerate Mike, he owes the 10K, borrows it from his law professor and gambles with it, essentially putting his future and possibly his life on the line to chase a pipe dream.
Don't you think he was at least out of trouble with the 10K?
he had 6k. kinish sp? said u need 50 or 60k, and he said well i had 6. there is a minimum buy in in any poker game limit NL or pot limit. in limit it is 5 big bets, so at 300 600 it would be 3k.
the flaw in the JC story is that if you only bought in for 6K and you need 50 or 60K to sit .......even if they let you play you are shortie short stacked!!! so when he talks about raise, re-raise, re-re-raise, fold JC ......that is just impossible cause at that point it would be an insta-call if Matt hadn't been all in at that point, no way JC folds!!!!!!
@oldirtydawson and of course there is a min buy-in lol, whether you play NL or Limit there is always a min buy-in, just no max buy-in for Limit cause it is irrelevant!
@dacheza So are you able to dish out 10 THOUSAND dollars on a moment's notice? That is a lot of money especially considering this is a 13 year old movie.
@dacheza Unless say most of the money is tied up in investments, if he's a smart business man and judges often are then he probably would have a lot of money tied up there. Maybe some will be set aside for retirement, but that money may not be unlocked until he retires from the bench. Therefore to get the full 15 thousand Micheal might have to wait a full day, but he could be dead by then so took the 10K.
@lurgertor Well if he was that smart w/ his money and has that kind of diversified portfolio, then I'm pretty sure he would of had a substantial amount of liquid assets as well. Either way, it's an awesome movie and we'll never know anyway. Take care

lets break this last scene down.. johnny chan comes and sits 300:600. matt damon sits down with 6 grand.. and folds most hands... but lets just say he has his 6k. johnny chan raises... so he probable raised.. 1500 lets say.. matt damon.. re raises.. has to at least re-raise at least to 3k.. so lets say he does that.. chan re raises the "tourist.." he raises... min is 4.5k... lets say he does it.. matt damon ships it for 6k.. johnny folds..
@DJChaps actually. looking back at the film.. i notice a couple more things... Knish says that you need 50-60k to sit at this game. so i assumed it was NL.. (100bbs.) but even for a NL game that big.. 100bbs has alot of variance. but putting that aside and looking at the table footage. the flop was already out. and the way johnny re-raised.. looks like they were playing limit. so johnny could jold in this spot if he was bluffing or drawing really thin(or at least maybe he thought he was).
How is losing your money with A9 vs AA with A99 on the board equivalent to being outplayed? What the hell is this kid on? That's a massive cooler you can't get away from, no matter how good you are. This movie is cool, but sometimes it's just full of shit.
That story he tells about outplaying Chen is bullshit and Ill tell you why: He says chen raises so lets say it was around 1.8K (Im taking NL 600 since his friends says he would need 60K to play), Mike reraises lets say he min reraises and makes it 3.6K, then Chen 4bets making it at least around 5K. Would he really fold to a 6K shove(assuming Mike didnt have his blinds stolen), needing to call only 1K in a 11K pot? I dont think so.
I think its limit poker their playing, cause when matt damon re-raises he doesn't say an amount.
Chan had seen that Damon hadn't played a hand for an hour so knew he was tight, so there was a chance he'd fold to a raise and when Damon re-re raises Chan puts him on aces or kings.
In most vegas casinos there are unlimited raises when its heads up in limit poker
I see your point, however you must remember that mike went to kgb's place with 10K, so he made 4K on that hand alone, since he says he got up and walked out after that move. Now, would Chan fold any hand on a 10K pot, with 2K more to call and maybe win 12K?
@kangadf In limit you might might fold 2K in such a situation, if you play pot odds in limit then your always getting the odds to call but if you do that you will lose money long term. also there is probably only about 1500 in the pot your making the assumption that Mike made all his money for KGB from this hand, he would have played in other games meantime this event happend 9 months prior to this, Mike hasn't gone 9 months without playing.
Because he took the complete fall and did the jail time by himself. He could've turned in who he was working with and they woulda been linient on him but he took the full rap.
the main prob i have wit worm is after they got all their money stole he took off and left mike out to dry.. thats notta good friend esp when it was his debt to begin with
The point is that worm made mike play cards again. Worm is a mentor guiding a student if you think about it. Mike decides to become a PRO thanks to his friend Worm.
mike decides to become a pro because of his professor/dean, not worm. worm was no mentor to mike. he was a destructive presence. the dean made mike realize that you can't pretend to be something you're not.
6:15 mike buys in for 10 big blinds and shoves... If that isnt a waste of money i dont know what is. How is Knish not laughing at him after the story?
he waited for a while giving himself a rep as a tight player and he couldnt shove because it was limit hold'em obviously if a player who hasnt played a hand for an hour keeps raising your bets it is probably a good idea to fold and that is what chan did
His problem was he owed so much debt and he wasn't sure Mike was good for it so he went ahead and MADE SURE they both would win up in Binghamton except he got caught. Sure, he's a jerk for dragging Mike in but if he doesn't, Worm is almost guaranteed to be dead.
Stones! you little punk. I'm not playin for the thrill of fuckin victory here. I owe rent. Alimony. Child Support. I play for money. My kids eat. I got stones enough not to chase cards and action or fucking pipe dreams of winning the World Series on ESPN.
@paulbarrera I looked all over for this scene...now that I'm older, it makes more sense, his speech. I don't play cards, but wow this movie...so many life lessons. Thanks to the guy who posted this movie...now I can listen to it @ work, lol...the Russian subtitles fit in nicely.
@paulbarrera Knish is the real smart hero of the story. The pros commentary say so themselves. He plays for money and makes smart decisions. Such as life, its hard to make the smart choices but they will pay off later. Mike in the movie never listened to anyone but his own ambition. I love this movie but Mikes karma reflects his choices. The choices of a dumbass.
The rest of it, like the size of his stack, is irrelevant to the story. It isn't that he beat him in one hand, it is that he read "Johnny f'n Chan" right and made him fold, thus outplaying him.
@SpankensteinPKR Oh please any fish could do that to a pro like Johnny Chan. Chances are he's been running the table over with rags since he sat down. As far as Chan is concerned this short stacked sucker is 5 betting him with AA or KK. Especially if Matt Damon is playing tight. Chan made a good pre flop fold even if Damon had rags. Nonsense.
@SpankensteinPKR that's right. If it was me vs Chan, he could tell not only my hands, but my middle name, the color of my undies, my parent's birthday, the school i attend, and what dream i have in the future.
The point of the whole scene is that Mike recognized the bluff and had the balls to bet back into him with nothing. He outplayed Johnny because he knew he was pushing. That is why he was convinced that he could play with anyone.
he didn't have to recognize the bluff, he had a super tight image and because he was folding for most of the time, the only way chan or anybody could call would be with the nuts which is what Tight Mike was representing, of course Chan is gonna fold.
on top of that, he outplayed him in one lousy hand, it isn't like they played heads up for hours on end and he gave him a spanking. anybody with descent ability can outplay a pro- in one lousy hand. especially when u have a rock image.
"Did you have it?" What's "it"? Aces or Kings? I'm pretty sure smooth calling a 3-bet with AA or KK is the best play heads-up. Correct me if I'm wrong.
What a player, wins one hand against the pro and leaves the table. lol
I wish I had someone to bail me out for tens of thousands for when I go bust chasing a pipe dream. And when they do, I would put it all on the table right away in one game. Yeah that's just about my life. Only it happens in hundreds.
And when I have a good session (say +1500), I pay my short-term debts back, leave myself with 300 and immediately smoke it away in the NEXT fucking hand (KK all in reraise, called by A9s). And we all know the odds when you're playing with your last dollar.
same shit happened to me 3 days ago 5/10 i'm up 600 after 5 hours AA comes I get two all in's in front of me guy had KK with 1500 sitting in front of him I call all in get the nut flush draw on the flp with the over pair and he hits his K on the river... I only lost a 100 but still that's y its a grind, o well I'm still up 770 this week
Like when I turned my min buy in at the 1/2 into $1100, and before I even finished stacking my chips, I get AA and run right into the table's other chip leader's set.
Or when I shove to steal blinds with 88, get called by 22, flop a flush draw, he hits his 1-outter on the turn and I routinely miss my 12 outter.
Gettin it all in on flop with AA (KK smooth called PF), one of the folders claims to have folded KJ. Biggest pot of my life... @#$%
well, when you don't know how to fold AA postflop with 550 times the BB you don't get much respect from me, it's still bad to gamble that noone limped with a good hand with fucking 88.
LOL, priceless line. I love this movie. This movie is so realistic, unlike other movies where they exaggerate poker. Casino Royale has FOUR OF A KIND, STRAIGHT FLUSH, any other movies exaggerate everything with poker hands which rarely happens. But this movie is so realistic and matches everything with the environment and all.
In this one show where two rich guys are playing for their business empires one guy has AA the other guy has QQ, board is QQAx, there is a raising war. Our villain with QQ re-re-re-re-raises and our hero goes to the tank... he thinks it over with his fiance about how to make the other guy let go of his hand and take the pot. LAMO like anyone's gonna laydown a hand that beats Aces full.
yea this movie contains some flaws, theres no way they were playing 300 600 NL, mike only bought in for 6k minimum raise would have had to have been about 1800, and if mike reraised then he was committed, so it doesnt really correlate to NL, it had to have been Fixed limit..
Knish told him he needed 50k-60k to play properly in a game like that. Mike told him all he had was 6k and he sat and played anyway. Pay attention before you start calling people an idiot you idiot. At 6:39 "I had 6".
He said he had to know because he had to know if he could outplay Chan. He had nothing but he wanted to know if he could go head to head with the best in the world and win the hand.
This event with Chan is what made him decide to play KGB at the beginning of the movie. He had beaten Chan and he was feeling like he could beat anyone. Apparently KGB was the best poker player around there at the time and everyone knew not to play 'The Mad Russian'
i finally realized that this was total b.s. he sat down, folded for an hour and then beat/bluffed Chan out of one lousy hand. it isn't like he beat him in a 10 hour heads up match or a tournament. so you beat a pro on one hand, that doesn't prove shit. just absurd part of the script.
it could be intentional to make the suckers/fish think in the same manner in a real life situation or bring more people into the game and keep them in it.
if you beat Chan on one hand, does that make u the best?
ur absolutly right. if u play with someone who folds every single time, and then after hours goes all in, u will definitly fold. but, its a nice scene for a movie :)
how did he have 6 if his total bank roll at the beginning of the movie is $30k (what he lost to KGB)? he said he grinded 30 out and he calls it 30, not 3.
also why does Knish tell him, "no way, you need 60 just to sit, if Damon's character had that amount?
i think that what Knish meant is that you need that amount of Bank to play the game and not go totally broke since that is 100 times the big blind. it isn't the buy in. 6K isn't enough bankroll, that is why knish was surprised he sat.
It's pretty obvious that Chan and Mike were playing in a Fixed Limit game. Since Mike was a professional, it's likely he made his cash at fixed limit games, like Stud & its variants. Also, they had green ($25) and black ($100) chips at the table, but nothing else. In NL 300/600, no greens would be required, and they'd likely have bigger chips too, and it's unlikely that Mike could even buy into a casino for 10 big blinds.
what i dont get is how Chan can fold against Mike when mike's stack is obviously no more than 20x 30x the bb, i mean he raised him twice, pretty much committed
"The inviting design of this website allows you to try your hand at poker against the many attractive players that are continually online." LMAO try making sense next time douchebag.
i never understood this part. he sat with the best in the world and won? he won one hand and ran to the cashier after that. any fucking donk can win one hand. if he would of busted chan thats a different story.
Any donkey could of course win one hand, but it's the fact that he won it by specifically outplaying chan that's important. Not to mention he sat down with only 6,000 with the main intention of finding out if he had the ability to play with the best in the world. Considering that, the hand was understandably a big win for him.
He said he played with him for AN HOUR! He sat there and figured him out. Once he figured him out he took the pot down and left. If you can sit with John chan for an hour and come out on top that's no "donk"..

chan raises so 3x and mike 3bet and chan 4bet. at that point mike is all in right? idk
gjuboy1122 2 years ago
he waited for a while giving himself a rep as a tight player and he couldnt shove because it was limit hold'em obviously if a player who hasnt played a hand for an hour keeps raising your bets it is probably a good idea to fold and that is what chan did

His problem was he owed so much debt and he wasn't sure Mike was good for it so he went ahead and MADE SURE they both would win up in Binghamton except he got caught. Sure, he's a jerk for dragging Mike in but if he doesn't, Worm is almost guaranteed to be dead.

It was limit poker
a123a456a123a456a 2 years ago
The rest of it, like the size of his stack, is irrelevant to the story. It isn't that he beat him in one hand, it is that he read "Johnny f'n Chan" right and made him fold, thus outplaying him.
SpankensteinPKR 2 years ago 15
@SpankensteinPKR Oh please any fish could do that to a pro like Johnny Chan. Chances are he's been running the table over with rags since he sat down. As far as Chan is concerned this short stacked sucker is 5 betting him with AA or KK. Especially if Matt Damon is playing tight. Chan made a good pre flop fold even if Damon had rags. Nonsense.
yssupvuli 1 year ago 3
@SpankensteinPKR that's right. If it was me vs Chan, he could tell not only my hands, but my middle name, the color of my undies, my parent's birthday, the school i attend, and what dream i have in the future.
rainzoro 1 year ago
The point of the whole scene is that Mike recognized the bluff and had the balls to bet back into him with nothing. He outplayed Johnny because he knew he was pushing. That is why he was convinced that he could play with anyone.
SpankensteinPKR 2 years ago
he didn't have to recognize the bluff, he had a super tight image and because he was folding for most of the time, the only way chan or anybody could call would be with the nuts which is what Tight Mike was representing, of course Chan is gonna fold.
on top of that, he outplayed him in one lousy hand, it isn't like they played heads up for hours on end and he gave him a spanking. anybody with descent ability can outplay a pro- in one lousy hand. especially when u have a rock image.
mattingly17 2 years ago
Wtf did Chan have? AK or JJ?
"Did you have it?" What's "it"? Aces or Kings? I'm pretty sure smooth calling a 3-bet with AA or KK is the best play heads-up. Correct me if I'm wrong.
What a player, wins one hand against the pro and leaves the table. lol
MrCanuck 2 years ago
If you look in the scene the flop is out.
Thurmdizzle 2 years ago
I wish I had someone to bail me out for tens of thousands for when I go bust chasing a pipe dream. And when they do, I would put it all on the table right away in one game. Yeah that's just about my life. Only it happens in hundreds.
And when I have a good session (say +1500), I pay my short-term debts back, leave myself with 300 and immediately smoke it away in the NEXT fucking hand (KK all in reraise, called by A9s). And we all know the odds when you're playing with your last dollar.
MrCanuck 2 years ago
same shit happened to me 3 days ago 5/10 i'm up 600 after 5 hours AA comes I get two all in's in front of me guy had KK with 1500 sitting in front of him I call all in get the nut flush draw on the flp with the over pair and he hits his K on the river... I only lost a 100 but still that's y its a grind, o well I'm still up 770 this week
BStrick8185 2 years ago
Ok the bad beat stories are countless...
MrCanuck 2 years ago
you shoved to steal blinds? you're a dumbass and should learn to play poker.
hmstr 2 years ago 2
Ermm I had $120 left, EVERYBODY had limped. I had $45 to steal by pushing. I guess it wasn't the "blind" I was after, it was everyone's limpage.
MrCanuck 2 years ago
well, when you don't know how to fold AA postflop with 550 times the BB you don't get much respect from me, it's still bad to gamble that noone limped with a good hand with fucking 88.

Mike: I need 15000 dollars.
Knish: I need a blowjob from Christy Turlington
LOL, priceless line. I love this movie. This movie is so realistic, unlike other movies where they exaggerate poker. Casino Royale has FOUR OF A KIND, STRAIGHT FLUSH, any other movies exaggerate everything with poker hands which rarely happens. But this movie is so realistic and matches everything with the environment and all.
EdDy4RheelZ 2 years ago
In this one show where two rich guys are playing for their business empires one guy has AA the other guy has QQ, board is QQAx, there is a raising war. Our villain with QQ re-re-re-re-raises and our hero goes to the tank... he thinks it over with his fiance about how to make the other guy let go of his hand and take the pot. LAMO like anyone's gonna laydown a hand that beats Aces full.

leguan1 3 years ago 4
yea this movie contains some flaws, theres no way they were playing 300 600 NL, mike only bought in for 6k minimum raise would have had to have been about 1800, and if mike reraised then he was committed, so it doesnt really correlate to NL, it had to have been Fixed limit..
jprince1001 3 years ago
he bought in for 60k u idiot
cards2018 3 years ago
Knish told him he needed 50k-60k to play properly in a game like that. Mike told him all he had was 6k and he sat and played anyway. Pay attention before you start calling people an idiot you idiot. At 6:39 "I had 6".
WileeC 3 years ago 2
he said i had the know, that probably means he knew someone.
mattingly17 3 years ago
He said he had to know because he had to know if he could outplay Chan. He had nothing but he wanted to know if he could go head to head with the best in the world and win the hand.
WileeC 3 years ago
oh, i wasn't sure.
mattingly17 3 years ago
This event with Chan is what made him decide to play KGB at the beginning of the movie. He had beaten Chan and he was feeling like he could beat anyone. Apparently KGB was the best poker player around there at the time and everyone knew not to play 'The Mad Russian'
WileeC 3 years ago
i finally realized that this was total b.s. he sat down, folded for an hour and then beat/bluffed Chan out of one lousy hand. it isn't like he beat him in a 10 hour heads up match or a tournament. so you beat a pro on one hand, that doesn't prove shit. just absurd part of the script.
it could be intentional to make the suckers/fish think in the same manner in a real life situation or bring more people into the game and keep them in it.
if you beat Chan on one hand, does that make u the best?
mattingly17 3 years ago 4
ur absolutly right. if u play with someone who folds every single time, and then after hours goes all in, u will definitly fold. but, its a nice scene for a movie :)

I heard Phil Hellmuth went deep in a $5,000 Horse this year.

MrCanuck 2 years ago
It's not that he beat Chan, it was that he outplayed him, with rags.
I guess Mike felt, since he could outplay Chan he could outplay anyone, no matter what cards he was holding
baddog7676 2 years ago
he said i had 6 refering to 60k
cards2018 3 years ago
lol you know nothing moron
do you even play poker? you obviously must be some freeroller or some shit because when he said 6 it was slang for 60 ...dick
ZaroxX 3 years ago
how did he have 6 if his total bank roll at the beginning of the movie is $30k (what he lost to KGB)? he said he grinded 30 out and he calls it 30, not 3.
also why does Knish tell him, "no way, you need 60 just to sit, if Damon's character had that amount?
i think that what Knish meant is that you need that amount of Bank to play the game and not go totally broke since that is 100 times the big blind. it isn't the buy in. 6K isn't enough bankroll, that is why knish was surprised he sat.
mattingly17 3 years ago
right. and zaroxx ure obvously some kinda wannabe poker pro.. go shut ur mouth

BigFigga 3 years ago
It's pretty obvious that Chan and Mike were playing in a Fixed Limit game. Since Mike was a professional, it's likely he made his cash at fixed limit games, like Stud & its variants. Also, they had green ($25) and black ($100) chips at the table, but nothing else. In NL 300/600, no greens would be required, and they'd likely have bigger chips too, and it's unlikely that Mike could even buy into a casino for 10 big blinds.
Thamel17 3 years ago 3
his chan scenario doesnt make sense :S
he sits down with 6000 at a 300/600 game
yet somehow he can RERAISE a raise from chan, and then reraise chan's reraise once more.
he would need more than 10000 for this to be believable, and yet as he says, he played tight for an hour and folded mainly.

Its a diff. Story when your sitting at the Table...
KUBentertainment 3 years ago
Any donkey could of course win one hand, but it's the fact that he won it by specifically outplaying chan that's important. Not to mention he sat down with only 6,000 with the main intention of finding out if he had the ability to play with the best in the world. Considering that, the hand was understandably a big win for him.
djeang10 3 years ago
He said he played with him for AN HOUR! He sat there and figured him out. Once he figured him out he took the pot down and left. If you can sit with John chan for an hour and come out on top that's no "donk"..
