Russian diesel locomotives 2ТЕ-10М two section have capacity 6000HP, 2М62 have capacity 4000HP, and American diesel locomotives GP38-2 have capacity 2000 HP, SD-40 have capacity 3000 HP. A result: Russian diesel locomotives are more powerful.
Yes but SD40 is not most powerful American diesel. AC6000 and SD90MAC are 6000 HP in a single unit, while 2TE10 and 2TE116 are 6000HP with two diesel engines instead of one. One AC4400 or Dash 9 44CW or SD70 is more powerful in a single unit than 2M62 with two units. And a pair of Dash 9's or SD70's is almost equal to a 3TE10 with one less diesel engine. So Russian diesels are NOT more powerful when you look at horsepower per single unit.
I visited Latvia in 2005, and was also in Jelgava, I'm sure the car alarm you hear is set of by a 2TE10, as these things have belly shaking basses.
The 2M62 2 stroke has the same operating principle as a EMD engine, with exhaust evacuation valves and roots blower, but suplemented with 2 turbochargers to give overboost, the engine is also more compact as an EMD, although the type never developed further from the 60's, as did the 4 stroke kolomna used in the 2TE116.
@dieselmupke The "car alarm" at 7:25 is actually the level crossing warning at this location. Many crossings in Latvia use this type of warning. However, I did shoot a scene at Tukums II where a 2TE10U DID set off the car alarm on our rental car!
s and 2TE10M's use a small whistle and not that huge single note horn which to me sounds better, and what kind of engines are inside of those locomotives?
Russian locomotives are equipped with 2 types of warning devices, the shrill air whistles and single note air horns. I am not sure what determines which is used in a given situation, but I have heard them sound both when passing.
The M62 and 2M62 when new were equipped with Kolomna D40 12 cylinder 2 stroke engines. Many in Lithuania have been replaced with Kolomna D49 4 stroke engines or Caterpillars. 2TE10M and U have Kharkov 10D100 10 cylinder 2 stroke opposed piston engines based on the Fairbanks Morse 38D 8 1/8 which was used in US locomotives in the 1950's
Which ones? American locos are mostly4400 HP per unit, with some as high as 6000. 2TE10 and 2TE116 are 3000 HP per unit. TEP70 is 4000 HP per unit. So which Russian locos are more powerful on a per-unit basis?
Russian diesel locomotives are more powerful than the American diesel locomotives!!! In America you will seldom meet two section diesel locomotives, both темболее at 2ТЕ10 and 2ТЕ116 not 3000 лошадинных forces, and 6000. In America to overtake huge structure 5-7 diesel locomotives, and in Russia всего лишь one 2ТЕ10
I disagree, but you will never see my point because you are prejudiced towards Russian power. I will leave it to impartial readers to make their own decisions as to who is right in this argument. Thank you for showing your interest in my video.
It looked like all the trains outside of the yards were running on single-track lines. Are all the Latvian mainlines single-track, or are there double-track stretches as well?
Double track exists on the Riga-Aizkraukle segment of the line to Daugavpils. Also, Riga-Jelgava is double track. Not sure of any others at this time.
Any issues with taking photos/video? I have been told that its illegal to take images of trains in Latvia? Police stopped someone I know twice. On my trip staff generally friendly but driver shouted and stuck fingers up at me.
If you mean the shots of trains going over a small river on a bridge, this is in Livani, about 35 miles northwest of Daugavpils, and about a 2 hour drive from Riga
No, no triples in Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia.

@fmnut Ah but the DD40AX built for Union Pacific was the most powerful of them all rated at 6600 horse power for unit!

Is Rezekne in the movie?

No. The closest we came to Rezekne was the area east of Rezekne near Ludza
See my Soviet Diesel Power video for some scenes at Rezekne depot and reserve base

I have two questions:
1)Where you take 2TE116 ?In 5:15?(station?)
2)What it station in 4:30?
pozdze 3 years ago
1) Near the E22 level crossing west of Ludza. Train was going west to Rezekne.
2) Jelgava
fmnut 3 years ago
There was a 3rd type of loco aswell,
I think this has a copy of the emd engine?
2 stroke overhead exhaust valves.?
tpvalley 3 years ago
1) This is on the west side of Ludza at the end of a cutting near a level road crossing.
2) This is Jelgava station.
