Ok, I'm a huge DM fan, but I'm having a hard time liking this version. I love the studio version, but there are too many thing that turn me off on this one. The big things were the background vocals and the guitar were too loud, or at least too intrusive. I think I'll stick with my 86-98 album.
It's funny how they played the Zephyr Mix here instead of their original version. However, I love the Zephyr Mix just as much as the original. Anyone agree?
Epic DM! Doesn't quite seem like the right venue to showcase the dark erotic beauty of DM. Letterman comedy then some richly sensual music with soulful sexual overtones. Quite the paradox, eh?
I love them...I'm 47 years old and went to almost all their concerts back in the day but some weird reason I never heard this song back then. I don't think it ever got any airplay on the radio.
The band is awesome, the back up singer is simply awesome, but what blows me away is that a show like David Letterman hires such an incompetent sound engineer! My goodness. Didn't they have time for soundcheck? The mix at the beginning of the song was horrid. It only got better at the second part. Sheesh. Thanks for putting this up on YouTube.
@fedezy 1975 was the year I started teaching, at Barstable School, Basildon, UK. I was Dave's art teacher for 3 years. I supported his application to art school where I believe he met up with Vince Clarke.
@fedezy I taught all the Gahan kids as I was at Barstable School 11 years. Dave was no different from other youngsters. He's good at what he does. It's a job.
Go check out another of my ex-students Guillermo de Llera, frontman and percussionist of Primitive Reason.
@fedezy Read up and you will see I was his art teacher when he was at school. I remember him clearly as a well balanced positive minded youngster. I find it hard to accept that he was rebellious as indicated on Wikipedia. I saw nothing of that. He was not a particularly outstanding student to start with but did enough to get an exam grade A in art.
Gives me chills...though I ain't a DM-fan. " Songs Of Faith And Devotion " is one of their best albums...timeless music. No doubt...DM are one the most important bands of the last 25 years. They will surely be mentioned in the great libary of music.
fun fact this songs not originaly his its a cover song of amphibiouse assult and the talented lovely Fallon Bowman ex member of the all girl metal band kittie she wrote this song do to an break up between her bf and her and all she wanted to do was isolate herself from everyone cus face it no one likes break ups no one so the guy who sings for depech mode did a cover of it cus he related to the song and put his own meaning of his version of the song ya. i do do my homework on shit .

Einmal DM immer DM!
First band I ever saw- 17- 1986- Black Celebration Tour, Birmingham NEC- was just an amazing night. Still have the programme. And these days live they look just bigger and better than ever.
That was just fantastic. Beat that for emotion. Though my views may be wrong- may even be perverted- she will hear me out and won't easily be converted- to my way of thinking, in fact she'll often disagree- but at the end of the day she will understand me (not this one I know...). The best thing about Depeche Mode is that they hit it on loads of different levels- lyrics, melodies, emotion, live. Great band.
Thats good but the lead singer sounds a little bit ähm..... boring.
When i hear songs from David Coverdale like Soldier of Fortune, i think he has more... power and of course David is a 4 Octave wonders but the power its just this thing.
nice version - saw them in 82 in cork city hall..then again in Merriweather Post Pavillion in maryland around 2000 (absolutely brilliant concert in outdoor amphitheatre in middle of a forest). talented bunch although they have lost the plot more recently imo
I remember this as the one of the first tracks to to go into layered drum tracks. The CD version almost bursts your speakers owing to the volume jump up which reminds me in my semility of a band called King Crimson who exploited the same idea.
12 years ago...physicaly times runs...but time running is better for good artists like DM are, as for good wines ! They are gaetting better and better. DM+LOVE forever:)
I like this version a lot. Plus, I think Depeche Mode physically never looked better than in this video, unfortunately it's just missing Alan. I do feel though that the last minute or so, once Dave stops singing, is where the song becomes a waste.
Guitar is fine in it, actually in this version there's more keyboards than guitar which makes the sound smoother. Both songs are fantastic, but this version is better IMO. If only they didn't give the back up singer a solo and Dave didn't leave out some of the lyrics than this song would be incredible. I believe though it had to be shortened for the time slot they were given and couldn't have a five minute song. The end though just really is weak though, nevertheless a fine performance.
I love this performance and thank you to everyone who has given their interpretation of what this song means either personally to them or to Dave himself. Much better then people making the usual jibes because they have a different point of view and believe everyone should conform to their beliefs.
i know this has to be the hardest song for dave to perform, because it pretty much described his life during his heroin days when he was off tour. Just confined to himself in his room everyday high on drugs... its so hard to not have sympathy for this strong man once youve read up on him, a very interesting guy, with a VERY interesting story behind him. He used to be one of the hardest rockers, you name it, he did it, and now he's become a gentleman role-mode type of guy, much respect.
Your so right ! When I watch the older videos from DM and see them in the 'See You' days, I think that he and DM had no idea what for ride they were going to have in life. Dave sure is an interesting person.
