This Kmart closed by Court order along with 23 other Kmarts. It had NOTHING to do with whether it was individually successful or not. Sorry to shot down your hate filled attack. Speaking of morons and rednecks...
Oh, and by the way, nobody shops at your stupid overpriced local family-owned stores. We're the ones complaining that we have to drive to Glendale or Burbank because Do It Wrong Center has crappy service and Merithew's charges a million dollars for a f'ing screw.
If Kmart had to close, what makes you think that Target or Walmart will magically want to move in all of a sudden?
Sure. There's a Home Depot in San Fernando. Guess what? They're putting a Walmart in Burbank, where the Great Indoors store was. Almost the same distance.
Yay, just what we need... another abandoned building on Foothill. Nice job, rednecks.
The main problem with Tujunga is that the city of la overlooks the area. For the past few years the mayor has been obsessed with fixing up dowtown la in hopes of bringing commerce to la which is good but to neglect other parts that is not fair. Although Tujunga and Sunland are filled with homeless and drunks the majority of residents obviously have homes. It seems that the concessional feeling is to open a Target so why isn't the community working together to open one?
They should have left the drive in up. Half of Sunland Tujunga was conceived there. Last time I lived there Zwern's Surplus Store the Honda Shop and the trampoline pits were there. Whaaa??? You don't remember where the trampolines were? Under Jack in the Box near Sunland Park. Wixon's Hobby Shop on Commerce was my hangout. I lived on Day St. near Haines Canyon.

You guys are killing your town... Its already half dead with drunks, intentionally homeless bums (not the kind that cant help it), bikers, and say nothing of the crummy streets and backwoodsy hick mentality. Whenever anything comes in that will help it thrive, you say.. NO We dont want THAT in our town. You dont realise that business is what makes a town thrive. If you kill the money makers... what have you got. A crummy little run down town. Sad but true.
Good thing they didnt put it there. It is way more useful to have lots of vacant store fronts. I especially like the way the vacant shops have been left to errode. Bring business to Sunland? What? Why? Cheaper prices for home repairs? neh... lets over pay for stuff.
I agree that they shouldnt put a Home Depot in that area cuz down Foothill towards La Crescenta theres an OSH and Do It Center where u can buy thos types of stuff at. So i think it would be beter if a Target or something like was made insted. Idk thats just my opinion.
By the way, I also Support Wal-Mart and would Love for that to move in.. You want a department store ehh?.... this entire one way in, one way out doesn't support anything since other stores on foothill blvd. have semi's coming and going.
You have not done your homework. We have. Home Depot's that are already in operation sport an average of 40 large truck trips per DAY. Per DAY. A department store will have...well let's take the KMart in Burbank.....FOUR PER WEEK!!! On the one little thoroughfare you don't have to be Einstein to figure out that the next road over will inherit a many of those vehicles and other traffic trying to avoid the heavy trucks on Foothill. That next road is the little 2 lane, sidewalkless...Apperson.
This one spot is the only one large enough to house what the community really needs. We are looking into a Sunland Tujunga shuttle to loop around the community and pick up seniors and take them to our shopping center. The shopping center being there with an anchor retail would create the shoppers staying in this community and not leaving, building other shops as well.
i totaly agree hith u i grew up in sunland on scoville an wentworth from 1977-1998 i dont remember the theater it closed when i was real young but i do rememeber kmart sunland was the greatest town a kid could grow up in i miss it so much now i have a son i plan to move back i want him to have the great experiences i had like hanging at vogal flats and the rest of the canyon hay is giamellies pizza still their anyway keep our town in greatness
ay CLAREHOLZER zip it with the "day laborer" thing ur actin like if only they abduct kids r u stupid every race has there crazy people not only day laborers ur probably one of those racist fucks in sunland thats y ur saying shit like that look at those fools at the sundown bar some of them r sex offenders look at the sex offender website and most of the registered offenders r white so like i said zip it witht hay day laborer shit u r just a fucken prejudice prick
Day laborer is not a racial term. It is a term that describes people of any race that wait around to get picked up for a job - one day at a time. There was nothing racist in what I said. YOU are the ignorant fuck.
@ClareHolzer You are absolutely right. In fact I remember in 1996 In south dakota there was a place called "Day Labor" that provided job placement for Day Laborers. Saw all kinds of people there, white, black and lokota indian when I went to look for some temporary work. I have never heard "Day Laborer" used in the derogatory. Maybe the person accusing you has their own, racist, preconceptions of "Day Laborer"
There was a problem a few years ago of a "day laborer" trying to abduct children that were going to and from that school. Imagine if there were 20, 50 or 100 "day laborers" at this site everyday.
Lets review traffic of KMart: cars, just cars, ok maybe moms w/SUVs. Just customers all day every day. Kmart did not create problems while there. Once per week there was a delivery. HD on the other hand has roughly 15 deliveries, SEMI trucks and flatbeds, per day. Their customer base all drives trucks, flatbeds, large and small pick ups, vans, Duellies and SUVs. They start at the crack of dawn, much earlier than KMart.Imagine all those trucks 2 blocks from an Elementary School. Is that differnt?

One street is the main route through Sunland Tujunga. This is the only place, this one street, where any commercial stores can exist. Unlike neighboring Glendale or Burbank where there are literally tens of streets where commercial or retail can exist. This is WHY the one street is protected by the Foothill Boulevard Corridor Specific Plan. INDUSTRIAL WAREHOUSE is not an allowed use of this space. There are seven hardware stores within a very small radius. WE NEED GENERAL MERCHANDISE.
for? what the hell for there is one right there in sylmar about 2 miles away and fuck that the traffic is bad as it is...not to mention the day labors are gonna FLOOD that area...fuck that bad enough they are on pinewood and haines canyon why are we gonna bring more over here...fuck home depot and anyone who agrees with it. you want a home depot in your town move to sylmar cause tujunga dont want you!!!

It was across the blvd. from the drive-in's marquee, that I met Micki Steele of The Runaways...Yeah,for it to be a successfull theatre,it needed to play R movies. But,to keep the family oriented activists of the time happy,it neeed to play G movies...And,it's only going to have one screen---"so old timey".
how does that make me a hick you dumb fuck cause i actually want something useful as a drive-in theatre oppose a suppresive business like home depot so go fuck yourself
you are a fucking idiot. what we need is a department store. there are plenty of home improvement places such as do it center and osh, and sylmar has a home depot. if you want one in your town, then move somewhere else, because the city of sunland and tujunga will not let it happen. I can bet you. if it gets put up, then people wont go there, and it will go out of business anyway.
What would work better in that spot, and probably be more accepted,is a Target---maybe even a Walmart...This isn't Alabama,Walmart has too much competition here,to dominate the market.
@Taranau There already was a store like that in that building: Kmart. THEY SHUT DOWN BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T MAKING ANY MONEY. We're not getting another one.
This is great. You can really see why they are totally differnt in terms of available commercial spaces. There is really NOTHING like what is in Sunland Tujunga. NOTHING. This really makes it clear.
I remember a troubling sign about 25 years ago.The person who had been elected president of the chamber of commerce was complaining about all the people who seemed to be satisfied with Sunland-Tujunga being a little hick town. And didn't understand why everybody just didn't want it to be more like West L.A. here...Well,let's see.Horse properties, canyon view properties.Edge of civilzation proximity to the national forest and Big Tujunga Canyon...Gee,I wonder...

How about the $9.00 for the 25amp fuse I purchased from the hardware store on foothill in Sunland vs. $1.87 at The Home Depot.
Paid for convenience? Service? Knowledge? I think not. I support The Home Depot.

Just one.
