@2:45 you can see condensation coming from the left-hand exhaust pipe. On the right-hand exhaust pipe are rubber tubes. You can see that the tubes have been slightly inflated by the exhaust gas, but they're still crimped mostly closed under their own weight. Virtually all of the exhaust gas is being routed out the uninhibited left exhaust pipe. If they would plug the left hand exhaust pipe, you'd see the rubber tubes rapidly straighten out, or simply blow clean off!
Seems like a good idea. Sort it so a reasonable amount of rocks can absorb enough for most normal journeys and all you would have to do is swap them at filling stations. If they can absorb it they can have it removed too so the used ones could be collected and recycled by the garage. If it's a 6 mile range on a 5.0 jag it has to be a lot more already on a small economical engine.
If it weren't for man's stubbornness and perseverance with new technologies which at first don't seem to work I don't know where we'd be at right now.
Try watching the video. They start the explanation to the problem with the tomato plant solution at about 1:39. The problem with using the lime soda crystals starts at about 4:03.

The SEAL's use lime soda crystals in their air recirculation units so divers won't create air bubbles, but this is super cool
