  • Do you use Rough or soft Sandpaper ??

  • How long do you let the primer dry?

  • @saddleclub100

You let it dry for 15 minutes :)

  • Do you have to prime your horse? Or and you just cover it with white acrylic?

  • @MoonShineStables Primer and white paint are not the same thing. Primer is a tough type of paint that sticks to surfaces better and allows for paint to stick to it. If you just painted a regular Breyer with acrylics it would likely flake off.

  • @HelenaTheRider You can take the paint off with Easy Off Oven cleaner. You get thwarted and spray your horse with it and pit it on a ziplock bag for 2 and a half hours. Then you take your model horse out and wash it with warm water. Use a tooth pick or tooth brush to get the hard to reach places.

  • Is it ok just to spray the primer on, not skratching off the paint? And what do You think about removing the paint with nail polish remover, and then prime it?

  • can preping fix a scrathed breyer???

  • @princelover12000 It can! If the scratches aren't too deep you can sand them down. If they are deep you can fill the scratches with apoxie sculpt or bondo.

  • Do you show breyers?

  • @quarterhorselover100 Unfortunately there's never any shows in my area so I don't get to show myself. But horses I've painted and sold get shown and their new owners sometimes send me pictures.

  • @SaturnineStudios Ohh i live in south ga and theres no local shows so i travel a little ways to one

  • would you do prepping like this if you had an artist resin that isn't painted? since i've got a peter stone would i have to put the primer on it?

  • @ArabianLover223 I've never prepped/painted an artist resin but I've painted one Peter Stone and I did the same thing I do with Breyers.

  • What is the purpose of the fabric item on your wrist? Does it give extra support, or..?

  • I have the same horse but in a difrent color

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH the horse is really scary! O.O

  • wow thats really helpful! i have the go man go breyer set with them mare stallion and foal plus i have to customs and i did the customs and i guess they can look good from a distance LOL but they are really bad. i just watched this and i am gonna start with the pastels :) thanks!

  • can you please make a tutorial on how to carve out their hooves!?!? PLEASE!!

  • could you use the apoxie for a whole horse?

  • @horseit100 Yes, Apoxie is a pretty good sculpting medium on its own. Its not just limited to adding to existing models.

  • i have a white Arabian. is it easier?

  • where do you buy apoxe?

  • @Conveyor12Studios Online from Aves Studio.

  • You can buy it online or at a major craft store like flax or blick.

  • oh i have that horse :) hehe

  • if the breyer is already white do you still prime?

  • just a question if u were to sell 1 of them with a longer main what would it cost

  • @breyerluver789 It would depend on what size model it is. Sculpting manes isn't easy and would cost more than the commission prices on my website.

  • When you let the horse dry after priming, would you let it dry outside or in?

  • @PrincessBreyer Outside somewhere safe or in a garage would be better. Primer tends to have a strange smell.

  • @SaturnineStudios Okay thankyou for your help! =D

  • could you do a tutorial on sculpting a mane and tail? plz...

  • What if you're going to customize it as a pure black horse? Would you prime it black instead, then pastel in lighter a bit in some areas as per reference?

  • @falcolf You can't really pastel from dark to light. For black horses I prime them white and then pastel it gray and then black.

  • what if you have paint on gesso?

  • @JumperPrincess105 I've heard that works but you have to watch out for brush strokes if you paint it on by brush.

  • all my cllasics have nose hols did you fill them with the apoxy

  • @horselove151 Those holes are intentionally put there by Breyer so that there isn't trapped air inside the model that would cause it to bloat. I never fill them in and if I don't want a hole in the nose I fill it but create a new hole elsewhere such as the underside of the horse where its less visible.

  • @SaturnineStudios thanks i was gessing that also do you prime and pastell the tale?

  • @horselove151 Yeah, I prime/paint it when I'm finished with the body. Its just a good part to hold.

  • @SaturnineStudios if using a stablemate do i have to prime or can i use nailpolish remover??

  • @nokeyanddoodoo Always prime. It gives the horse a nice white surface and ensures that paint/pastels will stick to it.

  • Thanks to u I have completed two classic horses and one stabblemate. U watched ur videos and they turned out very nice. I will soon have videos on of them thanks so much

  • when you leave the primer to dry does it need to dry outside or can it dry inside?

  • @5011barbara If you can leave it outside without it getting knocked over by anything that's best because the primer makes it smell after you put it on.

  • @terXterXterezka1997

uh, no. She's customizing them. There's a difference.

  • your videos are very helpful!!!

  • what r does tings on 0:59??

  • @6horsesrock6 They're a small file set I use to sand some of the seams down.

  • @SaturnineStudios where can you find apoxie?

  • just fantastic that you show your know-how to the whole world ;D

so much thanks to you :*

i'm german, but i understand you quite well =)

  • how do you reposition their legs and necks?

  • You really have to cut them up and resculpt with apoxie sculpt. Its a lot harder than it looks.

  • Yeah, its a dremel. They're great for carving but you need to make sure you have the right bit.

  • Thanks for making these - I can't wait to try my first custom!

  • what do you spray?!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Its Krylon matte finish.

  • hey your really good... do ya know of a good product to use if you wanna gloss your model? I just etched and costomized my black stallion cause he was a MESS! Now I really wanna gloss him but want the gloss to actually look good. Thanks!

  • Krylon crystal clear works great as a gloss. There are other sprays that might be glossier sold at craft stores.

  • where did you learn to do this?

  • Breyer's magazine Just About Horses had some articles on pastel painting that I learned from, as well as a lot of practice.

  • where did you get the apoxie sculpt? thanks!

  • Online from Aves Studio.

  • um would hair spray work as a fixitive however you spell it as i cant be bothed to get parents to go to a diy store

  • I haven't tried it but I wouldn't recommend it. It isn't made to last a long time or be durable.

  • Ooops i did not get spray primer i got the paint kind and i cave it about 2 min to dry

  • do u have to sand?? great vid!!

  • No but I like to make the horse look as smooth and flawless as possible before I start painting.

  • what if the horse is unpainted

  • Prime it still just as if it were painted.

  • what type of primer? thanks for helping me out btw :)

  • I use Rustolem Painter's touch primer but I've found that any white primer in a spray can works.

  • hey there - your video has helped me so much! i have all of my supplies and i have a few models to choose from (only have 3 classics and bought a cheap-o wixom from ebay) and was wondering which one would you do first: the wixom of a classic? (spirit SR)

  • I'd start with a smaller horse, preferably a cheaper one to practice on but it doesn't really matter.

  • hi,i was wondering, how does the apoxie sculpt work?i REALLY want to resculpt one of my model horses mains and tails!!!

  • It comes in two tubs, you have to mix equal amounts from each for it to harden. Then you have about an hour to sculpt with it before it hardens. It doesn't need to be baked.

  • thanks!!

  • I recently bought customizing supplies, but I think I might have made a mistake. Instead of spray primer, I bought manual, and it seems to be clumping terribly. Any suggestions on how to help me?

  • Using a toothbrush for cleaning also helps a lot. Just so you know ;) Very nice vids.

  • what brand of apoxie do u use?? i cant seem to find any thing when i look it up on the web like stickers and sewing machines come up :P

  • Try looking up Aves Studios for apoxie :) I've noticed that alot of artists who customize use it for repositioning and such.

  • ty:)

  • you helped alot! thanks! my breyer is all red on some spots because he was on the sun too much. so now I'm gonna start painting him over.

  • hey can you make a vid of how to resculpt breyer horses??:O

  • I'm hoping to after I get more experience in resculpting.

  • I love all of your videos, I've got my stablemate primed and I'm all forms of excited! Hehee when I get done, I'll send you the slide show :)

  • can you use those horses that you ''repainting'' in competioions??

and can you buy all those things at a hobby buisiness??

  • Yes, there's special classes specifically for customized horses.

Hobby stores also carry many of the supplies needed as well.

  • i hate sanding down the horse!!!! it took forever!!!! lol love this

  • Thank you for posting this! :D

  • In breyer competitions

  • Would you get taken down in points if the breyer didn't have the breyer logo?

  • Points taken down for what? Removing the logo is fine, especially if its in a noticeable place. A lot of customizers remove it.

  • my parents say that using sand paper will damage/scratch the breyer, so what sort of sand paper would work, very fine or just normal !?

  • It will damage the horse but if you're repainting it that doesn't matter. A fine grain sandpaper woks best.

  • wait, isn't the breyer model horse white underneath?

so don't you just have to put like tape were you don't want paint to go or something?

  • I have done that before but I just find it easier to paint the markings on later.

  • whats the easiest way to scratch the paint off? will bleach work? or will that just hurt the horse? also, ho do i paint a chesnut with white markins on the but?(like one of the breyer foals)

  • I'm not sure, I've never taken paint off. There's a product called Easy Off that's supposed to work though.

I use watered down acrylic for white markings.

  • It looks like Flicka is bleeding on her side at the beginning lol

  • i can't find the 4th part

  • where can u get primer and finish??

  • I get mine at a craft store.

  • on the spraying thing bit cant you just use spray paint or wont that work

  • If its colored spray paint it will just cover up the pastels. It has to be a clear non-glossy spray.

  • ok just wandering thanx for replying

  • thank you sooooooo much 4 this!!!!

do u have to wait over night if it's primer paint tho?

  • *sigh* i want to customize breyers, but i don't want to ruin any of them because i don't know how to paint them! any ideas on ways i can learn to paint them without

ruining one of them because i messed up? i am a tottal newbie at this.oh,and is it eisier to start with a foal or a classic horse?(all i have are classics except for a few old barbie horses, traditional size,i guess)

  • I would say to start with a stable mate... they are only 3 or 4 dollars... so try those!

  • also dont worry cuz if you mess up, just re-prime it and start again! Best to start with a model you don't like all that much or is damaged just so you're not too nervous to take risks!

  • what are u saying seems? and what are they? but OMG thanks! so much for putting this up i JUST got crazy about breyer and i wnat to look into remodeling my own! so i can enter contests.

  • is priming just getting rid of like little lump in it

  • what tool do u use to carve out the ears and hoof?

  • A dremel, with a fairly small bit.

  • thank u!

  • This is sooooo helpful! Thanks for going thought all the trouble to help us with customizing our breyers!

  • are you on Deviant art?

  • Yes, my username is morbidweasel

  • thanks!

  • hahaha da horse look terriifeid! Here's a funni story! My cousin was at da legs and he chopped off 1/2 da leg! poor horse and I told him to try it on a stablemate

  • do you haVE to take the paint off?

  • for my first customization I actually had to do a 1960 running mare with a broken leg... It was brown with scratches all over and nail polish on the hoofs, mane, tail, and eyes and nose. Now it's a black horse with a snip, all thanx to you vid!

  • is it okay to sand the model, prime the model, paint with acrylic, and seal at the end?

  • Yes

  • thanks

  • is that white stuff, like spary paint or is it something else, im going to paint a stablemate.. so to i have to prep that or not?

  • where do you get the apoxie?

  • Hi Olivia, I am enjoying your tutorials a great deal. I have to say though from pt 1 to pt 2 your voice changed some! You sound much older really. Wondering how much time passed between the two? I am getting ready to try my hand at customizing so I am checking out the tutorials then....who knows what may come?! lol

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!

    Raven

  • Do you have to prime your breyer and why?

  • i prime cos u can get a good basecoat colour. i don't know if pastels work over acrylics, but u cld try if u want. I am customisig Ruffian! yay!

  • too kool Olivia I like what your doing, You say you're a college student at 18? you should be a teacher, you seem to have a gift for it .

  • hey, um, wat do u use for the carving ears and hoof things out, my breyer is driving me crazy and im literally talking to it. i cant figure it out. plz respond oh and ur vid is great! =D

  • I use a dremel tool.

  • Hey please respond! ITs urgent! Okay, so I want to do a zebra, after I prime it, can I just paint black stripes over the primer?

  • Yeah, that's it. =)

  • Okay, do you have any reccomendations for black paint because I don't want to pastel it. And what primer is the best to work with?

  • I have a totally white arab all striped. Do I just add the color to it or build up color I want a sorrel color for her?

  • coocoo

  • do you HAVE to cover the horse in prime or gesso before customizing with paint, or can you just cover it in white acrylic paints?

  • Yes, you need primer. Some paints won't stick to the horse without it.

  • oh right, thanks :)

but does acrylic stick ok? if not, do you know if they have primer in the uk?

    thanks for your help

  • Marrylegs28:

I'm so sorry, i just accidentally clicked on the spam button on your comment D8 I didn't mean to!

But I was going to tell you that the same rules apply for Schleich horses. I recently did one using the same technique and it turned out great! :3

  • if you have any Schleich horses can you do a tutorial to paint them im dying to paint mine

  • My mom will only let me coustomise if I have a double of the model. And where do you get the Apoxie? I want to start coustomizeing.

  • when and how do you put white markings on the model?

  • why do u have to prep? Does it affect the pastels if u dont? please reply. thanks!

  • Prepping just gets rid of seams and other flaws the factory might have missed. You don't have to prep to pastel but it just makes the horse look a bit smoother

  • but if you want to show your coustoms, you must keep teh breyer logo

  • where do you get the Apoxie stuff

  • I have that model!

  • wait... wouldent the primer turn the horse back to white again? It changed it from its origional so wouldent it covor up the color again?

  • When you wash the horse, IF it has apoxy on it, does the apoxy get sticky or turn back into clay-like stuff?

  • If the apoxy is dry and hardened it shouldn't

  • i know your a busy woman, but around when should part 4 come out??

  • I thought you said that you can customize them just fine.... since you said you sold one for $900

  • use an airbrush, and im not that good at pastels

  • yea but your pastels look fine to me

  • haha trew my webcam

  • lol Yea i find some thing look better on camera! lol

  • lol

  • Is the pastel QH mare finished yet?

  • no, ive lost so much hope on her, but right now i am working on a romer that i got today at the flea market

  • oh ok lol

  • where did you get the horse on the stand the one you not painting

  • can u use paint instead of primer? Why or why not?

  • does the primer have to be white?

  • i love these tourtials, ive made a roan aplossa(spelling) and its is gourgous!!

  • one question when u prime it do u need to wear a mask over ur mouth

  • If you prime outside it should be ok but wearing a mask is a good idea

  • ok thx

  • questions, have u ever repainted schleich horses? if you have, does the paint peel off after you have repainted it? get back to me please! :)

  • I've painted two so far and have never had the paint peel off. But the spray finish has gotten sort of sticky XP
