  • Wait is this poteet as in poteet Texas cause i live there. But I go to somerset. But... Yeah I dont think this is in texas

  • Wow, great job guys!!!

  • guitarist and singer were the weakest links... would've been better without. Singer was ok at times, but guitar was just plain awful.

  • I want to go to this school

  • Wowwww!!!! Ovation to conductor, teacher and musicians!!! Amazing!

  • thanks great teacher! well down. I like EL&P. I am playing hamond and piano with honky tonk. please show me in japan.

  • xcelent!!

  • I've listened to this song since I was ten years old. What these people are doing ain't easy.

    BRAVO!

  • i am officially jealous

  • Hymponomp, or whatever the hell your name is. Prog is not necessarily a young persons "game". Look at rush!!!

  • What was the process for teaching-learning this? It is great but how did yo pull it off. Did you transcribe the notes by ear? from printed PVG part, etc. Keep up the good work. If this doesn't stave off budget cuts, nothing will.

  • Most impressive!!

  • Keith is going: "Where's my bleeding check, mate?". Nice work!

  • Hypnopomp, the key word in your statement is "TODAY" Dont' EVER forget who wrote this song in the first place! And played it perfectly for months on end! Back in the day when digital, overdubs, etc. were not available on stage! Great rendition but, dont' EVER "DIS" ELP, Asshole!

  • @rebelmunro And Emerson could do it note for note today, at what, 60+ years old?!

  • These kids play it better than ELP could, today, by far (Anyone who doubts this statement should have a look at the embarrassing High Voltage reunion footage). This video supports what I have always suspected: That prog is a young persons' game. Great job.

  • Impressive!

  • Too bad the Vocals were not louder, to fix the mix!!

  • I quit school in 1972 to pursue a career in music,(keyboards).! If my school had a music program like this one does, I would have stayed,And might have been sucessful!

  • I am thunderstruck... astounded.. rendered nearly speechless - not only at a GREAT performance but at the fact that someone even considered tackling such a complex piece of music to perform! VERY well done everyone!

  • hey I'm in this!!!!!!! I play trumpet in this....Off screen to the right

  • @TxRaider13 Great band, you were lucky. So tell us stuff. Did you do other ELP? Did that woman always play with here bag over her sholder? How many stayed with music? Is the singer as hot as she seems? What a voice. Do you stay in touch with any of them?

  • @toadabc Yes, and I will try to upload them. Yes she did, it was her safety safe. Umm well the Piano player was from Japan and he actually went back and now has his degree, and in this there 4 all state drummers 3 stayed with music, and also every wind player was an all stater and 3 stayed with music including me. The singer was hot in person, made practice fun to be at, plus she is really nice. Most of them.

  • @TxRaider13 Thanks so much for the insights! I have always loved ELP and found this clip looking for ELP music. I couldn't believe how well this song was done, and how close you guys came to the original. Was this video from a big concert? Or a typical show. How long were these particular people together?

  • @toadabc The concert was full and had people standing along the sides, back and balcony just to watch the percussion concert. The drummers were all seniors except 2 they were freshmen. The winds players were 3 seniors and me the lone sophmore.

  • The band teacher rocks and these kids learn a valuable lesson about what good music is.

  • WIN!!!

  • How many of you guys would like to see Mike Myers (the orchestral director here; sorry, Austin Powers) play composer to "Karn Evil 9" impressions two and three? The second impression is instrumental, with a synthesized Caribbean steel drum track.

  • Absolutely incredible! Great job.

  • Wow, lucky bitches. Prog doesn't even exist as far as my bullshit hip-hop dominated school knows.

  • This video could've been better if there were close-up shots here and there of each member of the band (vocalist, keyboardist, brass section, percussion, etc.). The transitions would be a la many of the 1980s MTV-themed music videos.

  • WOW, that just blows me away! Probably my favorite piece of music since I first heard it back in 1973. You've absolutely nailed it. Congrats to the orchestrator, the director and the students who conquered this sophisticated piece!

  • thats so fucking bad ass

  • this is great work... I wish some orchestra would record and release a version of this song, and not just play it for a small audience.

  • love it.... wish the guitar was MOAR LOWDAR tho

  • Great sintethizer player

  • Wonderful

  • I don't really like the singer, but otherwise it's great.

  • GREAT WORK!!!

  • Pretty damn good cover :P

  • If my high school had a band like this, I definitely would have joined! I doubt anybody calls these kids band nerds...well...maybe not :)

  • Poteet High School originally opened in 1986 (named after Dr. Ralph Poteet); that year was coincidentally the same year that Keith Emerson and Greg Lake banded with Cozy Powell to release their only album together, the self-titled "Emerson, Lake & Powell" which contained the single "Touch and Go."

  • phantastic!!

  • I'd like to hear the band performing the third impression of this tune, wherein the opening lyrics are: "Man alone, born of stone/Will stamp the dust of time."

  • Awesome

  • dude! i need this arrangement plz!

  • this is great it might not be as good as the origonal but then again theyre in high school you dont expect them to be although its an interesting take

  • all we got was thriller at my high school... man i would kill to hear a full ensemble of this performed by our band!!!

  • @BATTLEDROID678

And hopefully it will contain the "3rd Impression" which closes out with a futuristic random synth pattern.

  • Gotta be the coolest HS band teacher of all time!

  • Pretty good! Damn, how come we never got to play this in my high school band

  • @bwc3821

As a whole, "Karn Evil 9" runs for almost 30 minutes if you add up the times of all its three "impressions." The best known of these is the second part of the first impression.

  • haha, I thought you'd like that Jim !

  • Great work guys!! I would have killed to do this in high school. Bravo!

  • Coolest high school band performance.Ever! What a selection by the music director. Killer version of such a great song. I really loved it

  • I couldn't agree with you more - and the production of such a complicated song is BRILLIANT!

  • insanely jealous of you guys love ur singer

  • holy shiiiiit

I am so mad at my high school.

  • I am completely envious of the fact that this even exists. Unbelievable.

  • I wish my high school was this cool. This is truly an achievement that both the students and the music instructor should be proud of.

  • Grande! Youtube:"Frammenti" Music by Stefano Ottomano Ciao!

  • WOW, so this is where all the old music heads go ; teaching Karn Evil 9 to highschoolers.lol brilliant rendition of a very difficult piece. Imagine making all that music with just a trio like ELP

Thanks for posting this it made my day!

  • What an incredible, capable, and inspiring Teacher!!

    Well Done Maestro!!!

  • this is amazing. Perfect pace - the way it was meant to be done. Great voice!

  • I find it mildly amusing that they have about six kids replacing Karl Palmer and double that number replacing Keith Emerson.

And they could play it a LOT faster.

  • Professional musicians with a lifetime of training performing their trade better than high school teenagers from a music class? Unbelievable!

  • I too have this on my favorites and listen often, Awesome, Go Texas.

  • Hey nic e you hope to see you guys at WGI next year at Dayton...

  • JUST ABSOLUTELY AMAZING...yes I'm shouting!!

    More please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Harrys Child

  • Fantastic! Better than the original!!

  • whoever is on keys did an amazing job!

    this is great!!

  • Well I wish the conductor of my city's music school orchestra could have such a great idea ( although I would hardly find my place here as a part time bassoon blower/part time lyrical singer ;)). But he doesn't know this piece, I could bet my head on it.

  • I have listened to this song hundreds of times, and can say that this is a spectacular version. Yes, the guitar was a little out-of-sorts, but then again, so was Greg Lake! But you didn't hear that from me.. Anyway, AWESOME, THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

  • I saw/heard ELP do this live and the Poteet HS band was really ambitous and confident to attempt it. Great job! ELP/YES fanatic.

  • I'm speechless. That was absolutely mindblowing, Keith Emerson would shit himself in envy!

  • All i can say is...... WOW, WOW and Re-WOW

    They really nailed it

    Great high school band..:)

  • wow...

  • Fantastic performance, especially the synth/organ player. Tough to play music originally performed by a trio so tightly in an arrangement with so many players.

I was born too early. Would have loved to play prog rock music in a high school band. Of course, the kids playing this today probably think it's hopelessly quaint and old-fashioned....

  • I hate to take away from this performance, but I must note that the trumpets are slightly out of tune. Other than that, however, it was simply amazing. Texas schools really know how to play

  • Absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!! Kudos to the music department at this high school. These guys need to go on tour...or do a halftime show at some big football game...show those marching bands how to do it RIGHT!!!!

  • Good!!!

  • They kind of fell apart during the guitar solo, but I really liked it. Part 1 of the 1st impression kind of seems underrated to me.

  • I am fcuking blown away. When I first heard about this clip, I groaned, "Oh no, a high school band doing ELP?" Well, I had a great time pulling my foot out of my mouth as I watched this. Absolutely outstanding--Greg, Keith & Carl need to see this. And to think...this country's government is pulling the funds for music in a lot of high schools. Sad, isn't it?--especially when you see talent like this. Well done, you guys!!!!!!

  • Are you kidding me? This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen! First of all, that band teacher ROCKS for even coming up with the idea to do this. And the execution of it is awesome. I hope Keith sees this. Brilliant!

  • BRAVO!! Now that's a real "classical" music performance!!

  • ha ha ha

  • I wish we did prog in my high school

  • ELP meets Zappa meets Mr. Holland's Opus!

  • This is, like, the coolest thing I've ever heard!

  • i wish my high school music teacher was actually in touch with music like this. the only things he's into past the 1930s is jazz n funk, which is kinda cool for the jazz band.

  • This is Awesome!! I was literally smiling watching this thing. Getting chills!

What kind of mutant high school kids are these? Seriously. Great all around. Great vocals, great everything.

  • well done!

  • My band program was a lot of fun, but now that I see people are doing ELP I am extremely jealous. This is an excellent performance and does induce chills.

  • if you want to see something done completely by the students, check out check Benicia High School Percussion Ensemble 07-08. they did a sick cover on dream theaters "home". we are the best drumline in california right now, so check us out

  • MOST excellent! Congrats to both the music teacher and the students. Well performed indeed!

  • that is just excellent !

  • This school, it's students and it's teachers ROCK!! I'm 47 and want to got there!!!

  • i wish my music school teacher had the vison to get kids this intrested when i went to this school because when i was 12 i was playing this stuff.they hated music in my school i think

  • They aint that good, then again i am going there so thats probably why

  • These are High school kids? Wow...

  • This Kicks Ass!

  • Pretty dang impressive.

  • pretty dang PROGRESSIVE

sorry i just had to do that

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I can't believe this! I was overwhelmed. I just wished I were in that High School. I congrat Mike Myers for his obvious and great musical ability and also for his initiative of bringing such great music (and mostly forgotten, unfortunately) to young people! All the Best!

  • Remarkable performance of great music by great young players! Keep up the great work! Keith would be proud!

  • holy shit!!! I went to that school for 4 years and I never realized how kick ass the percussion ensemble is

  • Please kill yourself for saying that.

  • No, I won't. Please retire, Greg Lake! Please retire, Greg Lake! Please retire, Greg Lake! Please retire, Greg Lake! Please retire, Greg Lake!

  • I'm sorry that you have no taste.

  • This performance brought me into tears. Absolutely touching. 1,000 thanks! And my deep admiration.

    - c.a.t. Icaraí, Rio, Brazil

  • I think this is incredible and a superb rendition!

Ive NEVER ever seen anything like this in british schools, so respect to the teacher AND the pupils. :-D

  • Good... except for one thing. THEY FAILED TO DROP THE BEAT ON 'THRILLS AND SHOCKS'.

And they needed more than one singer, it was weak when there should have been more.

  • I noticed that.

  • awesome! i wish my high school band director did something like this, but all he decided to DO was all the band girls if you know what I mean

  • Despite the general lack of enthusiasm and the poor guitar solo, is a great idea. The singer will be in a better situation if the whole thing speed up. Anyway, thanks for the homage and for show this beautiful music to the new generation.

  • A professional job. Professional.

  • Well done!

  • This sounds alot like the DIC ( Drum Core International) version the Blue Devels did a few years back. This ensamble does a good version of this song. ELP is my faorit band of all time. Female singer sounds different, I like her voice. well done.

  • Dude! This is a beast cover of this amazing song. Nice singing too

  • Wow - awesome performance, fantastic arrangement

  • Poteet TEXAS?

    I'll be daymned!!

  • no, that's Mesquite, TX

  • rock on!!!

  • A good cover. Well done!

  • Spectacular! Love it!

  • Very well done!!

  • Awesome, I love it. The only problem is the guitar player, some f**k ups, especially for the so-little he has to play, but anyways, excellent performance!

  • You must have some serious ego issues. They all do a fabulous job!!

  • WOW! I bought Brain Salad Surgery on cassette tape in 1973 on a trip to Canada at some little record store. I wore the tape out of course! It would have never entered my mind that a HS band one day would be covering it especially this well. Great job!!!

  • Oh my GOD!!! That was unreal! Keith Emerson would sure be PROUD!!! I have to admit that it caused me to CRY! Teacher of the year? BAH! Teacher of the century! Damn good job. The Great Gates of Kiev next?

  • FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All the more impressive in when you consider

how young those kids are! ELP did that

song about 20 years before any of those kids

were born. Amazing job!! Hats off to the director!

  • This is so awesome! I am a very big ELP fan and hearing this really brought tears to my eyes. The band director should be very proud. World class job!!!!!!

  • A school band? Blimey. Stunning cover.

  • Absolutely wonderful!! Now on to Bohemian Rhapsody with the choral class.

  • Great!

  • Absolute mistake with the singer. Not because she's female but because Greg is a baratone.

HOWEVER, this is the best on youtube.

I've listen to this dozens of times since posted.

  • I might go to a high school football game if the band could do this

  • "HOLY SHITTTTTT" so there"s actually some Education done

in some these institution's,and not just indoctrination.....

making them bigger and better "Assholes" than their,

parents.however i hear they wan't to cut funding for this

well i guess so,somebody might actually get educated, and

    we can't have that.

  • Apparently you got no education at the school you went to, as evidenced by your poor grammatical skills.

  • Apparentlty! however i did excel in spelling skills.

"KizzMaAzz" did i spell that right?.

  • Wow, this music teacher should get teacher of the year award! this is amazing. There is hope for our children and here is proof!!! these kid's are awsome. with the amount of taxes everyone pays all our schools should be this good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mr. Holland's Opus indeed!!!

we never had such a cool teacher in my high school!

    great stuff!

  • This is so bloody cool it's not funny. Love hearing school bands take on stuff like this.

  • This is great! The music teacher deserves a medal, a promotion, and a raise, right now. :) I can't imagine how much work went into scoring for each instrument. I memorized it by ear when I was a kid and this is the first time I've seen or heard anybody cover it. I'd bet my next paycheck that Keith Emerson would be thrilled to see this.

  • Excellent. Thumbs up :)

  • God, this is so much better than a lot of the crappy "Industry" music we have these days.

  • Very inventive. I admire the music teacher for the time he took in rearranging this. I have always suspected that Karn Evil 9 should be rescored for a full orchestral production (since ELP took "Pictures" and turned it into a rock carnival). Part 2 is just as good.

Michael Myers - you are a TEACHER of inspiration. I wish you could've been my music teacher. Or my son's music teacher, even.

I hope you (and the young people) are as proud of this as you should be. I'm watching/listening again.

  • Whoa I wish my high school did that

  • ...Spetacular!Spetacular!... who makes the arrangement?

  • Michael Myers, percussion teacher currently at McKinney North highschool

  • Mr. Myers is currently my percussion teacher at McKinney north highschool. I normally play bassoon but due to playing a instrument you can not march with Ive had to learn how to play mallets.

In the past season I've learned a new instrument faster and more efficient than I thought would be possible, I've developed the most as a musician faster than I previously have ever.

Mr.Myers really is an amazing teacher.

  • I THINK ELP WOULD BE PROUD!!!

  • Really great, sounds very good

  • This is astounding! In my life, I've only seen one cover band (about 30 years ago) do any ELP stuff. They had two keyboard players, and were uniformly excellent, but they could not have pulled this one off. They used to do the 3rd Impression, but the 1st Impression is much more complex. For high-schoolers to pull this off is, well, nothing short of amazing.

  • Most impressive!

  • This is so awesome. I never thought a high school could pull this off.

  • Well done! A very difficult piece to perform. All kudos for sheer bravery and persistence. I'm sure ELP would find this a flattering tribute. Although the key was about a third or fifth below her comfort zone, the vocalist did a fantastic job. One could only wonder what this ensemble would have sounded like after a couple of years of regular gigging! Zappa. Hmmm...noe there's a thought!

  • Poteet HS band, amazing job, you all should be very proud of this one. A special kudos to the synth player, the sound is perfect and you didn't miss a lick. I hope ELP has seen this one for themselves. I would think they would definitely congratulate you on your version.

  • EXTRAORDINARY

    These kids destroy!!! BRAVO!!

    Long Live ELP!!

  • I can't believe High school bands cover this. This is amazing.

  • Mr Meyers and Dr Brent Wood. You two pulled off an incredibly complex peice of music. Kudos to the both of you. I've listened to this three times. Enjoy it more each time.

  • Wow, was this really 3 1/2 years ago? I was the bass player, even though you can't see me because of where Mr. Myers is standing, and the camera angle. I still have the sheet music and pull it out every once in a while. I still can't believe we pulled it off this well, even with all of the fantastic musicians, 2 juniors who made all state, and an 8th grader (at this time). This was definately my greatest memory of high school. (besides making the texas all-state orchestra)

  • What a great version! ELP should be proud.

  • Bravi!!!!!

  • Tight!

  • I'd Like to see this band playing some Frank Zappa!

  • I'd like to see this band playing some Frank Zappa!

  • You totally read my mind. These guys would rock playing Zappa, especially the stuff that Ruth Underwood played on, which actually had great percussion arrangements.

  • Heck yeah. Set them up for some "The Little House I Used To Live In" off Burnt Weeny.

  • pretty cool
