Thats not the stage at PW. But Nice curtains. Farner did play the whole night shirtless. Great shots and too see these really bring back the memories.White coil cords... PriceLess. I still live in Hollywood and think about PW when passing what left of it. No more Land craps. GFR Had Funk Soul and Balls.
If you worked at Pirates World and worked the day of the concert, rock shows were free. If it was your day off, tickets were $4. My brother Ronnie Simeone got my brother Bobby and I tickets and ohhhhhhhyeahhhh!!!!
"Just" an american band presenting a hard overpowering on stage. Feel the pulsation of the bass of Mel Schacher. The drums of Don Brewer seems like the seventh regiment of the cavalry. The bleeding guitar of Mark Farner.
And the voices.. Wow!
And today is the day to pay homage: this show does exactly 42 years.
I was a kid I remember pirates world my sister took me to a band I think GFR. Pirates world was the place back then I remember a little girl being bit by a rattle snake. WOW alot of years have gone by. The land crabs that covered sheridan st back then... Good memories
This is rock and not like the shit that bands play now days.I just wish i would have had the chance to see see them live. (Best Band EVER) Fuck the rolling stone!!!! this is the real deal!!!!!!!!!
Why cant Don and Mel be cool like this again...this is the REAL DEAL, sorry, but without Mark they really are not GFR. Mel had some cool expressions...what a great bassist and Don was amazing too, but somewhere down the line they screwed it all up!!!!!!!!!!
Undoubtedly one of the greatest early rock power trios! Why do so many people not know this band, you ask? Even in the 60's this music did not fit radio format. If your song went on longer than 4 minutes you never got airplay, or it was cut to shit. Even today on the nostalgia stations still cut songs like 'Inna Gadda da Vida' by Iron Butterfly. Now there's a great heavy rock voice - Doug Ingle. Praise be to almighty YOUTUBE for giving us a platform to expose and share so much great talent.
Thank you poster! Youve gotta stop and think aside from Zep, Cream, Hendrix and a small handful of others how many bands in the late 60s were balls out hard rock, distorted guitar. Very few! They were pioneers and Yes! people they were a FUCKING AMERICAN BAND in an English dominated industry.
@icabodcranium Not quite. The so-called British Invasion was long over by this time. British bands could still chart, just as they are free to today. But, most of the Top 40 were U.S. bands. Get an old Billboard from this time frame and see who was charting. And don't argue, Junior.... I'm old enough to be your grandfather. I was there.
@mnpd007 Really! I wasnt talking about Top 40. I was talking about Hard Rock. I find it hard to believe Into the Sun was in the Top 40. After they went bubble gum, loco-motion sure, right up there with the partridge family. I Respect that you were there and my question is what other American bands of this calliber were there in the late 60s. Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Lord Sutch,The Who. A few more bands but all British ,PAPA !
The only "natural high" I ever got (apart from after a hard bike ride) was listening to the live version of this song. "Space Trucking" was a close second (or was that third?).
Grand Funk IS NOT Grand Funk without Mark Farner Don and Mel you guys SUCK!!! This is how Grand Funk Railroad should be remembered., NOT this lame imitation that's touring the country. I got ripped off when I went to see them last year. Thanks for posting this truley GREAT video!!!!
@DIBBLES21 Yo' Dudes, and Dudettes from the 1970's Let's show all the kids today what The Real Rock and Roll is really all about....Love these guys, always have always will
Definitely the best band ever.. Now looking back at those years.. I would venture they were the first to be true Heavy metal style band.. The best years i thought was 1968-1972...
I remember when I was 16 years (1972), Grand Funk were very popular in Italy too and I liked them a lot. Now I am 54 years and I still like the Grand Funk by Michele (Italy)
@CVAN687478 Those are keystone badges on those LUDWIGS.I aught to know because thats what I drive for a drum set.Rogers were great too tho. This tune just puts me in the float!
One of the first Albums I bought as a kid and to this day I still love it ! they were without a doubt one of the best bands of our time, don't just listen to I'm you're Captain or Locomotion, those were just Radio Rock tunes, pick up the Red Album or the Live Album and get into the real shit , you'll never be the same. Thanks for the info on this video,I remember Pirates World as a young kid I was only 9 when this was filmed but knew they had concerts there wish I would of been a little older, every time I go down that road in Dania it reminds me of that place.
Mark Farner just has to be the coolest guitar player on the planet. The way he feels the music and the way he lets it all hang out is just a joy to watch. Thanks for posting this GREAT live version!
Saw them in Albany , NY in 1970 and still the loudest band I have ever heard live. The did kick some major ass that night with Leslie West and mountain as the opener.
Simply the badest band from that era...best live show ever and no band these days can be compared to the amazing energy of this group!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good GOD MAN!!!...Yeah I used to play a cover of this song...and I thought I had that lead down like some kinda PRO! ...But GOOD FREAKIN GRIEF MAN...did not Every Soul that watched this FEEL that POWER that GUT WRINCHING VIBE that was going on here!!! It's not how Technical a song is...it's all about Technique! Man!
For those criticizing the simplicity of the bass line and the entire groove...Hello? Do you not listen to blues? It's not about how many notes you play, it's about how you play them and the "feel" you give to a simple riff. Do we have to count how many out-freakin'-standing Howlin Wolf, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters songs simply hang on the "one" chord in a I-IV-V blues progression? This utterly simple song is packed full of emotion and energy, and yet so technically simple to play.
Nice Clip. i use to play this in my Rock Band in 1971. We did Into To The Sun, Heart Breaker, And their Version of Gimme Shelter from their Survival Album.
Wow. That's about all I can say. Well, that and the fact that when I first heard/saw these guys back in the early 70's, I was very glad I had been born female!
I absolutely love this band live. Great guitarist, fantastic bass player and excellent drummer. The best of all the Detroit rock bands. I love the song Paranoid....ear candy...
@nolanpotter1 I remember the Live album from this time period. Mark and Mel playing through those huge Fillmore West amp stacks. They got some pretty tough reviews; but, to a teenager in that time, I thought they were "the bomb".
Agreed! MONSTROUS bass tone. Infectious groove. Mel's West Avalon amps sound as if they're at critical mass! If I had one wish....It would be...to be transported back in time, so that I could sit in front of Mel's amps to allow him to rearrange my internal organs with that Distorted THUD. The best rock bass tone EVER.
Jeeze, I thought this looked familiar. This was the third concert I ever went to in the 7th grade. Mom & Dad dropped us off at Pirates World & picked us up after the show. I wonder if they smelled anything funny on our clothes, haha!
BRILLIANT SONG! i see why the song ended their concert records, another showstopper! the song is a frame, with a lot of GREAT, musical improvisation stretching it out; this could have been at least a half-hour long, imagine that!
Is this the rock group that ruled the concert venues for years? The group that sold millions of LP's? The same group that influenced thousands of wannabe rock bands to get it together? The same group that gets rejected year after year for the Hall of Fame?
Yeah, I think so. This is Grand Funk Railroad. Right?
Silly me for thinking this was some nobody band that never did squat.
I'm sorry, but this looks before 1969. Look at the audience (the heads in the front at the beginning). They're not moving at all, like if it was something brand new to them.
I might be wrong though, I always like to make sure of timeline stuff.
I'm just like you, always like making sure of timeline stuff, so to help you out I suggest you read one more time the description carefully. You'll the find the answers you're looking for. As for those "still heads" are actually "theatre stage lights"...
Please check more GFR videos here in my channel and you'll find some interesting info about The Group.
@sinning1966 You're right...they're "not moving at all," not like this was all so new to them, but like they're...not people's heads! Those objects remain absolutely immobile, which leads me to conclude they are some sort of stage equipment, either monitors, or stage footlights, or something else. This was obviously filmed in a small studio, and not in a club or arena anywhere, and there is an utter lack of audience noise, reaction, clapping, booing...anything.

BRILLIANT SONG! i see why the song ended their concert records, another showstopper! the song is a frame, with a lot of GREAT, musical improvisation stretching it out; this could have been at least a half-hour long, imagine that!
i really like 06:16 to the end

Is this the rock group that ruled the concert venues for years? The group that sold millions of LP's? The same group that influenced thousands of wannabe rock bands to get it together? The same group that gets rejected year after year for the Hall of Fame?
Yeah, I think so. This is Grand Funk Railroad. Right?
Silly me for thinking this was some nobody band that never did squat.
Phony rock hall anyway.
Thank you Mark, Don, & Mel.
You guys really ruled!!!

John is correct; this was Jan., 1970; Grand Funk did not form until the spring of 69 with first big show the Atlanta Pop fest in July of 69.

What about Mondo Daytona in 1968?

I'm sorry, but this looks before 1969. Look at the audience (the heads in the front at the beginning). They're not moving at all, like if it was something brand new to them.
I might be wrong though, I always like to make sure of timeline stuff.

Hi,
I'm just like you, always like making sure of timeline stuff, so to help you out I suggest you read one more time the description carefully. You'll the find the answers you're looking for. As for those "still heads" are actually "theatre stage lights"...
Please check more GFR videos here in my channel and you'll find some interesting info about The Group.
I'm always happy meeting new GFR fans.

@sinning1966 It's actually 1969 following their debut album.

This footage was made in spring 1968 (from the documentary Mondo Daytona). How early hark rock can be!
