Rob, how long did it take you to work up this piece from start to finish, and how much do you practice daily? Is organ your full-time profession? I'm so impressed!
Would love to know, Rob, how long did it take you to work up this piece from start to finish, and how much do you practice daily? Is organ your full-time profession? I'm so impressed!
This is superb- I heard the great Scott Dettra bring the house down playing this at the end of trhe Washington national cathedral carol service- and if possible that was even better
Hey I just posted a recording of the same piece. After listening to your recording, I got the sheet music and whipped it up in time for Christmas Eve. Thanks for the inspiration, hope you enjoy!
@patrickhenning71 Do a google search for CLASSIC MIDI WORKS. Should set you right. They do get quite pricey, but are definitely worth it. In my opinion, a good Hauptwerk organ is far superior (and cheaper!) than a similarly specced digital organ.
stunning and magnificent. One of my favorite of the Christmas carols. You did an superb job, thanks for posting this for us to enjoy this Christmas season.
Great Job! One of my favorite Christmas pieces. I heard Richard Elliot play this a while back and was really astounded by it. Wish I could play like the 2 of you. Keep it up.
"Bring a Blowtorch, Jeannette Isabella" Hilarious! I can see why Elliott revised the name. Your playing is so clean and accurate, yet not at all mechanical. A rare combination indeed. Have you a public list of this 4-manual setup? I'm about to take the Hauptwerk plunge. Thanks for all your postings.
I can hear the applause at the end! Wow, that was a great recording, and you played great as well! That's probably one of my favorite hymns! Good registration on a good organ!
Absolutely outstanding Rob!! The complexity of this is mind-boggling for someone who can barely play a 2 manual Hammond T-212. I actually have 2 of these organs, one playable, and one parts donor that will eventually be converted for Hauptwerk as time permits. :)) I think I'll probably be *very* old before I can get to this level though. :D Great work sir!
to all the organists watching this video, just a note of awe from me, a lowly pianist who can not conceive fo playing with both hand AND both feet. And to the guy playing in this video, thank you so much for posting this. I heard this arrangement in concert about 9 years ago and have wanted to hear it again so badly. Great!!!
I have just buyed 4 man and 32 pedalboard and the set up of Notra Dame I want to no how i can add a 5th one on to it as i can only go up to 4 on me software .. reply back thanks
I think it's possible, but I don't know how to add a 5th manual through Hauptwerk. Brett Milan would be able to answer your question. Contact him at crumhorn-labs (dot) com.
I have a copy that I got. Its not printed anymore because Warner Bros. owns the copyright. However you can get it through your state library link gateway. I get lots of sheet music that is out of print from them. What state are you in? I know a few of the website links if you're interested...
Do have some links? I'm in Kansas, but couldn't find the book in any of the 4 metro public library systems, three local university libraries, and the Kansas State Library (and it's extended search network).
There is a mistake in the music that anyone learning this piece should know about. Look on the last page, second to last score, you'll see the last three measures in 3/8, 6/8, and 5/8. The 6/8 measure is missing a B natural in the pedal. You can see that it's missing because Keith explicitly flatted the following note in the 5/8 measure.
You may notice that Richard Elliott plays the piece correctly, since he was an assistant under Keith at Wanamakers.
Hi MDLRX8, I got your PM, you'll have to forgive me, it's near impossible for me to keep up with the correspondence. I had a look at the score and see what you're talking about. I did realize that I'm playing it correctly. I don't know how I learned it correctly seeing as the sheet music is incorrect. Perhaps I've just listened to Dr. Elliott play it too many times :D
I think you're missing the mistake I was trying to point out. Listen at 2:32. You're hitting a B flat as written instead of a B natural. The last two pedal notes on the second to last line should be B natural, B flat, not B flat, B flat.
I think you're right about the G in the pedal at measure 61, since I play it that way too. Unfortunately, I can't remember if Keith told me that himself or not. I also add the pedal G on measure 59, as does Dr. Elliott.
Also, if Dr. Elliott's recording indicates "the way it was meant to be played", then the sheet music is missing a G in the pedal at measure 61. I play this piece with both of these "fixes" to the sheet music.
I too would LOVE to see a video on how you set up the entire Hauptwerk (Actually, Brett Milan would do well to have something like that on his website or even youtube!). I think many of us (myself included) would like to obtain this setup but honestly, the look is a bit complex and probably scares several people off. For me, I'm the type who can read about something 10 times and still not get it, but if I can SEE it ONCE, I'll understand it.
I told Brett that he should sell "ready to go" Hauptwerk organs. I couldn't set one up myself. I had to get help. I'm the same way as you. Once it was set up, it's sort of easy.
This is what I tell most people. It can be a lot of effort to get it up and running. But once you're to that point, it's just as solid as a prefab organ.
Thanks Lance - I've been wanting to get this one posted for a while, but it took me a while to get comfortable with it, it's a very busy piece, especially when you play it at Keith Chapman speed.
So you are telling us Rob, that you can add manuals to your set up! Are you getting them from Organ Supply House or where? I assume they are stackable and unlimited???
The sound system upgrade is a very good move. As for the video camera. I recommend Panasonic. I like the ease of use and excellent optics which is crucial to good picture quality.
Again, excellent playing. I also like it that you get dressed up to perform.
When did you get the fourth manual? I still would like to see a video of your Hauptwerk set-up and how you did it. I am interested in putting one together myself.
Hi, I've been thinking about some kind of video documentary, but I need some ideas :-) What specifically would you like to see covered? I got the 4th manual and the rest of the upgrades the day after I posted Louis Vierne's Final.
Gee, I would like to see everything on how you put it together, from pedal board to speakers. Also, what computer you use, what special equipment you used, how you wired things up, what worked and what didn't work. Just about anything and everything about your great sounding instrument that you play so well.

You can find it in a sheet music book called "At the organ with Keith Chapman" - the book has a photo of the Wanamaker Organ facade on it.
