I come from an old school death metal background and industrial (Godflesh), and though I want Sunn 0))) to blow me away, I haven't found enough quality so far in the records...

@yoe91 altar was the album I was into when I heard these guys. headphones don't do the job in my opinion. there's so much intended distortion and low end. if you're lucky enough to be somewhere you can see them absolutely go. this approach to music is so refreshing even if its dark.

I think they're alright, but I guess it's something you have to experience in person to truly get. Otherwise, I prefer Dark Ambient, but I know the 2 aren't comparable.

I had a similar experience of body vibration prior Sunn O))). First time was Slan, a project from John Zorn and Elliot Sharp, second time was Granular Synthesis, a proect they had done with Diamanda Galas.
I just got back from Soundgarden ("oh no, soundgarden they're too mainstream") no joke I can't hear Anthony right now. After Slaves and Bulldozers they let the amps feedback for like 10 minutes, Kim Thayil augmented this with a whisky bottle, go see them to find out what that whisky bottle does.
I don't know if it was mentioned, but the reason it didn't feel like it was coming from the stage (aside from all the foggy confusion) bass frequency is omni-directional.

I used to play shows with a bassist who used a Sunn model amp, we would all have our stacks set around 7-8 and his bass amp would be on about 2 and he would still drown all of us out easily. Those amps are ridiculous.

I agree with his assessment. I saw them in Detroit in '09 in a bar\club the size of your living room. It's funny what he keeps saying about standing up. After about 20 mins of the gig, I crossed my legs and sat in front of the soundboard. And forget top 10: I would put them at #1. Just behind Pink Floyd and Nine Inch Nails (on the Downward Spiral tour).

Saw SunnO))) years ago. I wasnt ready for the lack of notes. Maybe 10 notes for an hour strait. Body stiffens, Disoriented, almost makes you angry? Drove 250 miles home. It literally took me 3 months to understand the experience. Everyone has the capacity to let this music touch them, but most wont let it in. Its not normal, but its real and cuts you deep. Again it took me 3 months to appreciate.

I had pretty much the exact same physical sensations as you when I saw them in london in 2006 with the dude from xasthur on vocals. the thing you said about mouth dropping open, and also not being able to stand properly. but particularly what u said about the sound feeling like it was actually coming from inside your own body.
I had a friend describe to me a very similar Sunn experience to you. Everyone was lying down on the floor. People were literally shitting in their pants. Just from those vibrations.
After describing this show, I /must/ see Sunn live, now. I was never too big of a fan of their music, I really have to be in the mood for them, but this sounds like quite the experience. I am jealous that you got to not only see such a line-up (Pelican, Earth and Sunn!? Epic!) but got to experience something so.. I don't have a word to currently describe it lol

I used to play shows with a bassist who used a Sunn model amp, we would all have our stacks set around 7-8 and his bass amp would be on about 2 and he would still drown all of us out easily. Those amps are ridiculous.

I agree with his assessment. I saw them in Detroit in '09 in a bar\club the size of your living room. It's funny what he keeps saying about standing up. After about 20 mins of the gig, I crossed my legs and sat in front of the soundboard. And forget top 10: I would put them at #1. Just behind Pink Floyd and Nine Inch Nails (on the Downward Spiral tour).

Saw SunnO))) years ago. I wasnt ready for the lack of notes. Maybe 10 notes for an hour strait. Body stiffens, Disoriented, almost makes you angry? Drove 250 miles home. It literally took me 3 months to understand the experience. Everyone has the capacity to let this music touch them, but most wont let it in. Its not normal, but its real and cuts you deep. Again it took me 3 months to appreciate.

After describing this show, I /must/ see Sunn live, now. I was never too big of a fan of their music, I really have to be in the mood for them, but this sounds like quite the experience. I am jealous that you got to not only see such a line-up (Pelican, Earth and Sunn!? Epic!) but got to experience something so.. I don't have a word to currently describe it lol
