@Captb55806 There is no thumb safety on it; just that palm safety (which I kinda like as it doesn't seem to affect the reliability of the gun at all and nor does it get in the way..).
The new XD's do come with a Thumb Safety but you do not have to use it, can just leave it off all the time and have the same functionality of the original XD's but its there for those who want it.
there are two designs of xd45. the old one has a straighter handle similar to most semi automatics. the new one has more of a curved handle almost like a revolver. the older ones don't have a saftey other than the grip safety on the handle and the trigger. the new design has one by the slide and trigger guard. i got the old design. it's friggin' sweet.
I noticed that there's a cavity on the bottom of the grip that goes way in. It bothers me that they did that. Does your gun also have this big cavity? If you turn the gun upside down you'll see what I mean, if yours in fact has it, that is.
All the XDs have that cavity. It's from the moulding process. The only way to seal it would be to add an extra piece to cover the gap, and that would add weight and expense. The hole doesn't go anywhere, so you don't have to worry about dirt getting into the action or anything.
This is a great weapon. I had the opportunity to shoot a friend's .45 a few weeks ago, and preferred it over the glock. More accurate, nice recoil, and felt slimmer and better angled. (for me)
Ordered one today, and should be here within a few days. Got the 4", .45, compact XD. ;-)
Glocks are nice, but you really have to know the pistol. My brothers a CO and when they were qualifying with their pistols a guy shot himself in the hand while cleaning his Glock.
Google Todd Jarrett IPSC Pistol Grip Lesson. There is a short version and a long version of that video. Watch the long version. Gun magazines were discussing this stance as early as the mid 1980s. The weaver is pretty, but in a stressful situation it is not a natural stance, nor does it give you good control over the pistol.
Same with mine. About 300 rounds and now it shoots like butter and eats everything. I've got 2k or so through it and even though it looks beat up from abuse it runs perfect.
save your $ and get what you want. But the XD and even the Glock 21 are great pistols for the money. No malfunction, total reliability, and they will fire any .45 acp cartridge. They are not as fussy as some 1911's. But if you want a nice 1911, save you $ and buy a nice one, like a Springfield Operator. That's my next 1911.
you know i am shopping for my first semi-automatic pistol and from the one's i have held in gun stores i'm thinking i don't like polymer frames, can i get some opinions on this, i do not have the funds for a full fledged nice 1911 like i would like but i am dead set on .45acp as my caliber as its my favorite
if you dont think you like polymer frames dont get the XD, its a great gun, but your first gun should be one you absolutely love
also the trigger pull on a 1911 is more crisp than the XD, which i thought was significant enough that if i could go back i would have bought a 1911 instead of the XD
I know this is 2 years late, but the XD is not 100% polymer. The slide is steel and it rides on steel rails molded into the frame. I have the Tactical .45 which is the full-sized 5" barrel design. It is remarkably smooth and fast to get back on target as Kev stated. I prefer it over the XD9 I used to have, since I can shoot it MUCH better. Your mileage may vary but, for the price, XD45 FTW!
you should shoot DOWN at a target. My neighbor had a bullet fly through his window because of people shooting at tragets above them.

My only beef with the Springfield XD is that thumb safety which is not needed.

I'm pretty sure the 45's do have a thumb safety but they are the only XD calibers that do.
KYDRIVER1 2 years ago
@KYDRIVER1 Mine doesn't, the last time I looked.:-)
guyNbluejeans 2 years ago
Yeah. It's the XD service 45's that have a thumb safety and it may only be an option. I have an XD-m 40 so i'm not up to snuff on the XD's :).
KYDRIVER1 2 years ago
you can choose to get an XD with or without the thumb safety
mrh20082008 1 year ago
Thanks. I guess I got lucky and got one without it.
guyNbluejeans 1 year ago
so did i, i got my XD 45 about 3 weeks ago, was going to get the one with thumb safety but it was $40 more
mrh20082008 1 year ago
Too many safeties on a gun isn't a good thing in my view.

thats negligence ,he never slide -inspected the chamber.....
and thats rule 1. assume a weapon is loaded ,until a check is made.....

Glocks are not better. They are dangerous. Some have no safety device... !!!

I shoot a few hundred rounds a month through my 5" tactical. No malfunctions and dead on accurate. Best pistol on the market for the money!
RGRAY7 3 years ago
My XD45 had about a 300 rd break in period, then it's spot on. I have put about 3500 rounds through it, and never had malfunction issues.
I have started loading my own rounds for this pistol, and have a vicious 880fps 200gr load that I'm using which has recoil much more like a 9mm.
I love the XD!

I've put 3000 rounds through my XD .45 Tactical and I've never had one malfunction.
It is a helluva lot of pistol for only $500.
I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine!
The polymer frame doesn't devalue this pistol in any way, shape, or form. I put my firearms through the paces, but I also keep them well maintained.
If the polymer frame is keeping you from making the purchase, forget about it.
Springfield Armory (even the Croatian Annex) has always produced exceptional firearms.
toddianuzzi 4 years ago
Thank you, but the pistol is not mine, it was borrowed. I was very impressed with how well it shot.
survivalistboards 4 years ago
It took about 300 rounds to brake in the barrel.
I think that was the only negative aspect, but what firearm doesn't require a break-in, right?
It's great for concealed carry if you're a slimmer individual, but as for my big ass, I have to carry my Kimber.
