I agree with pretty much everyone of these choices, except my personal GOTY would be Batman: Arkham City, only because I felt it was much better than Arkham Asylum, whereas Uncharted 3 was slightly inferior to Uncharted 2.
As a huge Indiana Jones fan, the Uncharted series were the next best thing ever for me. I have played them all and love them all and Uncharted 3 is definitely my game of 2011!
I was disappointed with Uncharted 3, I felt it was less of a game compared to Uncharted 2... I felt it was more about the set pieces than the story. the second felt like it moved more cohesively forward, whilst Uncharted 3 seemed to be all over the place. Surprised Arkham City and MW3 weren't on the List.

@frizzy2k6 Uncharted 3 was certainly less of a surprise than Uncharted 2. Yeah, I liked Uncharted 2 a little more than 3 as well, though both are amazing. I kinda get that "cohesion" you mentioned. Uncharted 3 sets up Cutter and Chloe but forget about them for half of the game. (And everyone loved Chloe!) I also felt that Amy Hennig's U2 script was fantastic, and this game's paled in comparison. Uncharted 3 had much better set pieces, though. And Uncharted 3's multiplayer is much better.

My game of the year and best RPG would be Dark Souls. Awesome graphics, soundtrack (especially Gwyn, Lord of Cinder), weapons, and it was way more gripping than Skyrim.
Best shooter was Killzone 3. I think there are some original ideas in there along with some great graphics and sounds.
Favourite action adventure UC3, but was disappointed with the anti-climatic boss fight

Dark Souls is a greater RPG than Skyrim imo. Take out the bugs, frame rate issues and load times and I believe Skyrim would be seriously challenging Uncharted 3 for GOTY.
That said, Skyrim is far too flawed to deserve Best RPG when Dark Souls is so polished.
My other issue was Dragon Age 2. I must be the only person who actually preferred this game to DA:Origins. I didn't find it disappointing at all, but clearly I'm in the minority on this one.
@gmac1981hg It's because she is biased. She is only going to award what she loves and has played. It's not like a regular award giving, where she has played ALL the games THEN makes a decision. No. Skyrim is the best RPG, because that's all she really. Never even looked at Witcher. Uncharted 3 wins best graphics, because she never played Crysis 2. UC3 wins game of the year, because she never touched Arkham City. etc etc.
I'm super cheap and the only games I've paid full price for all year were Portal 2 and Skyrim. Haven't played Uncharted 3 or Arkham City yet (still waiting for that to be marked down on Steam) so I can't comment on either of those, and I don't own a 360 so I don't really care all that much about Gears of War. That being said, the real standouts for me this year are Skyrim, Skyward Sword and Portal 2.
Dead Space 2 is my game of the year, granted I'm playing through some games I haven't beat yet. Skyrim and Arkham City deserve special mention. Rayman Origins is best platformer hands down. Biggest disappointment to me was RAGE, without question.

agree with this completely uncharted 3 not getting game of the year vga was just stupid the game had 1 problem and that was the texture drop ins which has been patched and is no longer a problem, but the best dwnload of 2011 is sonic cd easy thats abother game that is just gold from start to finish!
UnCharted 2 was so boring and formulaic, when I got to the last part I just couldn't bring myself to complete it, what is more, in the beginning, Nathan 'Hero' Drake goes around snapping necks of innocent museum guards. Who did they ever hurt ? Doesn't matter, Drake had to get some jade lamp and so it was alright to kill off bunch of museum. I guess that means if I ever get to Naughty Dog Studios I can kill their receptionist if I want to get into a closed meeting and get an autographed U 2

Interesting choices. I don't agree without all of them, but some were pretty spot on and you even took the time to explain why you chose what you chose. I probably would have given the GOTY award to Skyrim, but that's just my choice. There were many good games to choose from so it is difficult to decide but I believe Skyrim is the best at least this year.
You should definetely play Dead Space 2 and Killzone 3. Killzone 3 is friggin awesome. The graphical quality is extremely close to Uncharted 3 and the game is just a blast to play. Dead Space 2 is Goty imo. Creepy atmosphere, cool story and extremely brutal and satisfying combat.

You are insane! You did all those quests in Skyrim :). You are amazing. I re-watch your Skyrim review and realized you DID like the game. For some odd reason, I was getting the feeling that you didn't dig it, but no. But yes, the bugs can be quite strange (funny at times).
My GOTY and most dissapointing games are complete opposites. Dragon Age 2 is my GOTY. Definitely the best combat that I've EVER played in a game. The story was great; epic, spanning 10 yrs. As I played I just loved Hawke and felt like I was really accomplishing something. Idk where all the hate for the game comes from. UC3 was really short and the ending was anticlimactic. It was just more of the same. UC2 was WAY better. I wasn't blown away like I was with UC2. The story...meh. Characters...meh
Oddly enough, because of that cute dog, it took me a whopping 10 seconds to finally focus on your cleavage. If anything, I think that speaks to the awesomeness of that dog.

@RaychulMoore I've got to disagree as well. A lot of people can be wrong when it comes to an ambiguous piece of art. Portal looks like a shooter, but it is, at its core, clearly a Puzzle game. The game's bulk consists of solving puzzles; there is no other aspect to the gameplay, at all. I dig your videos, and I'm sure some popular magazines DO make this labeling error. This game is just hard for people to describe, like Killer 7.
@RaychulMoore Most sites call Gears an FPS, despite it being a third person perspective. Sites only refer to portal as an FPS because it's played from a first person viewpoint. It's a puzzle game, it just shares a perspective used by the majority of shooters. Anyway, good list.
I personally would have given the award the lord of the rings war in the north for rpg. i thought it was a very underrated game. maybe im jsut talking out of my ass because i love lord of the rings but thats just me. i love skyrim to just as much but i put a lot more time into lotr and i have skyrim so far.

agree with this completely uncharted 3 not getting game of the year vga was just stupid the game had 1 problem and that was the texture drop ins which has been patched and is no longer a problem, but the best dwnload of 2011 is sonic cd easy thats abother game that is just gold from start to finish!

UnCharted 2 was so boring and formulaic, when I got to the last part I just couldn't bring myself to complete it, what is more, in the beginning, Nathan 'Hero' Drake goes around snapping necks of innocent museum guards. Who did they ever hurt ? Doesn't matter, Drake had to get some jade lamp and so it was alright to kill off bunch of museum. I guess that means if I ever get to Naughty Dog Studios I can kill their receptionist if I want to get into a closed meeting and get an autographed U 2

I highly agree with your disappointment of 2011. Dragon Age 2 was overwhelmly awful! And Uncharted 3 is awesome. Same with Skyrim, Batman Arkham City & Portal 2. Good year but imo not the best. Think 2012 will be amazing, can't wait for all those games!

Interesting choices. I don't agree without all of them, but some were pretty spot on and you even took the time to explain why you chose what you chose. I probably would have given the GOTY award to Skyrim, but that's just my choice. There were many good games to choose from so it is difficult to decide but I believe Skyrim is the best at least this year.

You should definetely play Dead Space 2 and Killzone 3. Killzone 3 is friggin awesome. The graphical quality is extremely close to Uncharted 3 and the game is just a blast to play. Dead Space 2 is Goty imo. Creepy atmosphere, cool story and extremely brutal and satisfying combat.

My GOTY and most dissapointing games are complete opposites. Dragon Age 2 is my GOTY. Definitely the best combat that I've EVER played in a game. The story was great; epic, spanning 10 yrs. As I played I just loved Hawke and felt like I was really accomplishing something. Idk where all the hate for the game comes from. UC3 was really short and the ending was anticlimactic. It was just more of the same. UC2 was WAY better. I wasn't blown away like I was with UC2. The story...meh. Characters...meh

RPG: Xenoblade Chronicles(EU)
Shooter:BF3 (cause I don't like shoots at all but this one some how pulled me in)
Action/Adventure: Zelda Skyward Sword
Handheld: Super Mario 3D Land( most of the same resons)
Platformer: Lost in Shadow (an amazing platformer)
Titlescreen music: Zelda OoT 3d (most cause it brings back so many memorys)
Letdown of the Year: Tales of Xillia ( cause it didn't come to the US or it would of been my GotY)
GotY: Zelda Skyward Sword
But thats just my opinion

@RaychulMoore I've got to disagree as well. A lot of people can be wrong when it comes to an ambiguous piece of art. Portal looks like a shooter, but it is, at its core, clearly a Puzzle game. The game's bulk consists of solving puzzles; there is no other aspect to the gameplay, at all. I dig your videos, and I'm sure some popular magazines DO make this labeling error. This game is just hard for people to describe, like Killer 7.

@RaychulMoore Most sites call Gears an FPS, despite it being a third person perspective. Sites only refer to portal as an FPS because it's played from a first person viewpoint. It's a puzzle game, it just shares a perspective used by the majority of shooters. Anyway, good list.

I personally would have given the award the lord of the rings war in the north for rpg. i thought it was a very underrated game. maybe im jsut talking out of my ass because i love lord of the rings but thats just me. i love skyrim to just as much but i put a lot more time into lotr and i have skyrim so far.

I know that you personally dislike Metacritic, but for whatever reason....95%+ of the time, the scores seem to not only coincide with good award shows like AIAS and BAFTA...but the Meta scores seem to coincide with you too.

I, for example,
Unfortunately, I was hit by the layoffs, and thus, I'm on a tight budget. Therefore every game I buy, HAS TO COUNT.
Therefore, Metacritic is a VERY valuable resource to someone like me, & I suspect, to many others, as well.
For those that get free games or aren't constrained financially, I can see why Meta's might mean nothing
