he plays the same solo every time. maybe he could get a little bit more creative. but his main job is not soloing it's to hold down the low end. he's a good bassist but can't solo well.
I'd like to see 5% of the people, that say Mike sucks, strap on a bass, and back up eddie on guitar, and see how far they go.........when you consider that mike has to play with Ed,and back him up,on bass, you have to admit he is a very good bass player!!anybody that plays music with Ed has to be very good period
maybe i'm missin' sumthin but what did mikey do to deserve the title of a bad bass player? maybe compared to the ox or victor wooten on a technical scale but to say he sux is a matter of opinion.i bet his financial advisor doesn't agree with you.i personally like peter criss as a drummer but he is no neil peart or lars for that matter.mikes playing style fits the band.if he wrote the notes, actually played them and got paid 4 it he must be doin somthin' right i suck as a bassist but i aint a pro.
I guess the main thing I´m trying to get across is this: while he´s not THE ABSOLUTE best bassist-and would you really say he sux? I suck at bass-he is, when you take into account all the things he brings to the table (see above), the best bass player in a band. Do you agree somewhat? Gimme something, dammit!
Also wantd 2 commnt on his solos. While the distortion phse of his solos can be, 2 some, somewhat tedious 2 hear (I c it), it´s something he does out of sheer desire, not lack of technical talent. He mixes it up in an attempt 2keep it exciting and hld the crowd. Furthermore, the pieces of music he creates and/or choose 2play b4 and after that are quite good: Beginning of the Live Without A Net solo? simple yet very dark and moving. Balance tour? Beethoven with a gothic edge. A standout bassist.
Nvr sd M A was the be all, end all of bass plyrs. Entwistle, Sheehan, Bruce might b more proficient, but he´s very good. There is, hwevr, a lot 2b said 4 stage presence, too. Can u picture The Ox standing in one place the whole shw, playing 4 VH? Or Bruce OCCASSIONALLY shaking his head? Not quite the same thing, is it? And M´s vocals are an essential prt of the VH sound. Show me a bass plyr who stands out THAT MUCH vocally and I´ll shut up. 4 a bass plyr M A brngs a shit load 2 the stage!
I like The Ox, Geddy Lee, Victor Wooten and several other bassists, and Michael Anthony as well. You're just acting stupid by saying he's a bad bassist. Yeah, sure he's not the most skilled one, not the most technical one, but he's a good bassist with charisma and knows how to motivate the crowd. Same thing with Angus Young, he's not the best guitar player, he's just a wild guy that motivates the crowd.
QUOTE - "I worked my ass off on Fair Warning. But I love it, it's my life... I won't rag too much on Dave; he pulls his own weight. Mike [Anthony] doesn't. He doesn't do anything; he has no input whatsoever. But he has remodeled his whole house and bought himself a [Porsche] Turbo Carrera with the money he's made off of us. Whatever. I'll tell you the honest-to-God truth - since day one I never liked Mike's sound, and I could never hear him when we're playing." -- Eddie Van Halen, 1981
Reason why Mike is not with Van Halen, is because while Van Halen we're on hiatus, Mike Anthony didn't want to sit home staring at the walls all day, so he went off to play with Sammy Hagar (which Eddie didn't like) calling themselves the other half of VH which Eddie also didn't like. Eddie figured it was a crush of loyalty to VH. who knows, it's over and done with. Wolfgang is doing a great job.
Wouldn't go so far as to say Wolfgang is doing a GREAT job. He's doing the job, but that's about it. He might be a nice guy but he has the stage presence of a head of cabbage. And don't gimme the "he's only 16 yrs. old" argument. I'm sure Mikey at 16 was already a beer drinking crazy ball of energy. His shoes will never be filled.
Van Halen had alot of dynamics. DLR was a great frontman. Van Halen was an energetic guitarist. ANd ANthony was the harmony behing Van Halen. It's like the focus was centered on one person. Thay all brought something. Clearly to many egos got in the way in such a short period.
And what of James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius, and Michael Manring? Steve Harris is not technically great, you can find much better without searching for long. About Anthony, i just think he's shit.
Michael A. as a whole is great with Van Halen along with his backing vocals and playing melodies. They didn't sell millions of records for nothing. Jaco Pastorius, now you're talking a whole other realm in which the majority of people do not relate to something that technical. He is a musician's musician. But to me, it's all about the heart & soul.
I was refering to him as a "part" of Van Halen's sound, including his backing vocals. Also referring to Van Halen as a "whole", Not Michael A as individually/soloist.
lol are you kidding me? your calling this guy better then vic wooten? this is just mindless soloing. vic wooten creates music, real music, and his technique is far beyond the common bassist
Can anyone please tell me WHY? Why is Mike being dissed by the Van Halen Bros and Diamond Dave on their new reunion? Why are they being jerks to the guy who's played the most humble part in the band loyally for years. I'm not a fan of Mike personally, but I think its lame to dis the guy like they have!
10% good stuff 90% filler. But about 90% of the average crowd could give a sh!T about a bass solo anyhow, so why not give 'em a good show. He's gives you a little fancy fingerwork. And then goes crazy. Rock on, Mike!
I don't care for his bass effects on his solos, but his playing live and on albums is pretty fucking amazing. Son of a bitch is fast. He keeps it simple and then rips it during Ed's solos. Most people don't notice obviously because of Ed.
What a no-talent flaming ass wipe. I hope that he sucks on a replica of Eddie's penis every night to remember that the only reason he doesn't work in a laundry mat is because of him!
DUDE, its a fucking show, as long as the crowd loves it, thats allllllllllllll that matters. and sure wooten is one of the best, but he doesnt get a crowd to fucking piss their pants like that.
I think michael richards is good enough to be in a band and put in base track....but as far as technical skills he sucks. Not worthy of doing a bass solo. GET VICTOR WOOTEN IN THERE!!!!
Michael Anthony is a great human being, but as a bass player sucks, maybe is the luckiest bass player in the world.
