Actually, minstrel banjos were typically bigger in all aspects compared to a modern five string. Bigger pot (12-14" Or bigger!) bigger length (36" overall, typically, I think) and, of course, bigger sound. Mmmm gut and skin, modern materials just can't compete with that sound.
@lewdite a ministrel banjo is fretless and has a different headstock than traditional banjos, check out old cremona's channel or brian carver's channel for more information.
@SirCoughsalot Minstrel banjos are traditionally fretless with gut strings. Google 'Bob Flesher Banjos' and you will see some really good examples of them that he makes for sale.
Sounds great John!! Im going to try and learn this one! These old time tunes are the best!!

Now, what's the difference between a minstrel banjo and a regular one?
SirCoughsalot 2 years ago
Well, I am not sure but I think the minstrel banjo has a shorter neck than the standard 5 string banjo.

Oh yes, and they were often fretless. Not all, but it was quite common.

@SirCoughsalot I believe the difference is in the playing style, the type of strings (gut rather than steel) and the tunings used.
