I find this as weird and useless as the next guy, but here's where I think the "This is artwork" argument comes from. Symbolically, she is allowing the color to enter her body, and then letting her body place it onto the canvas however "it desires". It's very, very strange but I guess knowing that makes it a little easier to watch and gives you something to think about.
