the strings pad at 1:34 sounds great. I have an SY77 could you tell me how you achieved this (wonder if it uses the '99's better quality effects to make it sound so good?)
what great sounds... for worship music.. I have tears in my eyes.. any module version of this grt synth.. cause its very heavy.. had a motif Xs6.. sold it.. that was heavy too... but these Eps are AWESOME... thanks... strangely I play somwhat in the same style.. cheers..
0:39 the classic well used FM piano is so beautiful. It's like all our seaside lakeside dreams where the sun is shining and we are with that someone special just enjoying each others company without a care in the world, like a little touch of heaven. Thanks for posting.
Great to see this. Hopefully you still have it. Sadly, the SY99 is almost a forgotten synth. Great sounds, but came our right when samplers got popular.
Awesome Synth. Have a Motif ES6, too. But the DX-E-Piano Sound never found on it , like it Sounds on the Yamaha PSR-520 ( 13 yo ) . Iam searching for it....Great Synth
i had a motif xs 6 sold it because of the weight... i heard the Sy 99 once,, man what super EP sounds.. .. igreat synth for worship music... but back breaking.. 19 kgs frm what i remember... ne module version of this great instrument..
Beautiful electric piano sound of the third patch 0:37, i want an SY99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, really it´s a jewel, hi from mexico, sorry if my english is fragile
Impresionante ... yo que pensaba que los Fm pianos que usaba el tecladista de Luis Miguel eran del KORG M1 y la verdad que me equivoque... los mismos de este suenan igual!!!
WOW! It sounds really warm and smooth! The pads are amazingly lush, NOT something I've heard before in Korg or Kurzweil, except the OASYS. That's the ONLY keyboard I can think of that actually sounds better than this.
But I wasn't expecting the SY99/77 to be THIS good. I knew it was good, but this is really mind-blowing. I gotta get me one of these now! It'll compliment the OASYS beautifully!
Im curious, I wonder y they dont use ep's in r&b anymore? Is it that they sound 'dated" as i said in a earlier reply? Hmm, so damn sad. The rnb I write to this will have ep's in it. I will never let ep's die. Esp FM ep's
Perhaps sy99 is better if well programmed. programming is very difficult but after strog works you can obtain good original sounds. I don't know how work k2500 or korg 01/wfd, only heared some sounds...
@piladex I also have an SY99. Would you please tell me how I can get the FM electric pianos that you played at 40 secs and also at 3min 35 secs. thank you, jacker53
I Loved the sound of the SY99...AWM2 Architecture with FM synthesis as well...Truly awesome...I have a few keyboards....Yamaha SY85, SCI prophet 2000, yamaha CP30 (classic EP) Wurlitzer A200. Alesis QS 8.1 and my newest the M-Audio Keystation 88 pro....Have a few modules too...peavey DPM SP with DPM SX... two Roland JV 880's I love my gear
i was inspired by all italian music, there is not a particular song composer i refered to. I made a pure improvvisation. Perhaps in italian music most of the chord sequences are the same i played in my video, but it's a simple coincidence...
First chords on this video i already heard but don't remember where, some kind of Austrian or Italian old music, please help me find out what the composer.
Please do more of the videos with the SY99. This is great. What a marvelous synth. Probably the best digital synthesizers of all time set aside from the DX7.
Thanks a lot for restoring my faith in FM synthesis. I don't think you realize the effect you have on the keyboard players that view your videos. I gave up a Korg Triton Extreme for an SY99. Very hard to find one.
SY99 makes nice controller too. I'm rebuilding the keyboard on mine. It's completely disassembled to completely clean and re-grease all 76 keys and put new felt on underneath keys & the strip above. It's gonna play like new with great action when I get done!

PS, the beginning (0:00 to 0:14) pattern with the strings/pad sounds like the beginning of a 90's rnb song. I'm thinking...
I cant remember if it was jodecy, shai, rkelly. damn this is bugging me... "freak me" maybe silk? damnit.
MadCobraProductions 2 years ago
I have always been a fan of the sy99 since I was 19 yrs old back in the early 90's.
I drooled over this at sam ash in cherry hill nj.
I couldnt believe it was $4300 new. But it is amazing to me how popular this was in 1990's R&B music.
I would like to know if I am right that this was used by boys to men and babyface?
Beautiful board. FM synthesis was so popular in the 80s' & 90's. I wish it was used more now but it has a 'dated sound' to me anymore

1:48 sounds like vp330 strings.

It's a patch made by the mix of a standard choir sampled waveform and a FM sine-like pad
piladex 2 years ago
@piladex whats the poin of using samples on synth?
Yunneck 1 year ago
The pad from 8.12 is is a winner: complex, textured, spiralling. What's that about the SY sounding thin?
pierstheoneandonly 2 years ago 3
It's a mix of a sampled synthstring ad a warm double octave FM pad, plus chorus and reverb

that electric piano sounds gorgeous....can i get something like that on my sy85?

PS, I have to say... IMO, Yamaha has always had the best electric piano's ever.
And i am Rolands biggest supporter.
FM systhesis produces the best EP again, IMO.
I'm surious why they dont use EP's in R&B much anymore.
MadCobraProductions 2 years ago
1990'S R&B for sure. SY99 played a BIG part in it.

for some reason, it reminds me of Windows Vista.

I had an SY99 when they first came out.
DX7II "WITH FILTERS" + the whole AWM side and you could modulate one with the other.
What a great board. Pain in the but when you break a key though. :) Lot's of screws to take off.
To this day Yamaha has yet to make a board with a better interface. Maybe with the Motif XS, but a lot of unhappy customers on that one...
These SY99's are hard to find used. No one will let go of them. :)
