I think life back then got extremely graphic--far beyond anything we have to contend with. Allan W. Eckert's Narratives of America are amazing books. I first ran into mention of her in one of his. That was life on a scale of violence I never want to have to face. Talk about courage!

What an amazing story! I believe that the poor old dutch woman that went with her didn't get enough credit, Mary wouldn't have survived without her. Follow the River by James Thom is a great novel of Mary's story.
@musicsean77 The old woman's morale was so low, I'm sure this was a two-way street. Neither woman could have gone it alone. I love it that they ended on good terms after each was rescued. What a story!
@Patsyzip Yes, it really was! From the very beginning of the novel, I was completely enthralled and couldn't put the book down! It is extremely graphic in the first chapter, but the author is an expert at immersing the reader completely in the story!
