  • Mike Tiricos "It went in the bern" is the best golf call of all time!!

  • I know him. Nice guy, laughs about it now.

  • could've happened to anyone. Happens to me at least 3 times a round

  • The book How We Decide brought me here.

  • tipical french

  • @iSPaLiTo haha, that exactly i thought at that time" sh...t, the cliché of the french loser gonna explode after that..."

  • the champion score was +6 .....

  • Ironic thing is that he's probably remembered or more famous for this capitulation and not being an Open champion than someone who is an open champion such as Ben Curtis or Louis Oosthuizen

  • some of the most stupid play i ever seen

  • "here's where the tragic comedy begins..."

    LOL

  • I remember watching this and just thinking ''WTF''. Why not use a mid iron and look for a safe 5.

Three to the green and a two putt.

  • I think he saw the movie TIN CUP on tv the night before !! Same thing happened in that movie pretty much

  • When you choke, and lose your ability to make simple decisions, amazing happens

  • the man is in desperate need of psychiatric intervention at this point absolutely fuckin bizarre

  • For music lover: Bring out the Molly Hatchet classic, "Flirtin' With Disaster," because this applies to this self-destruct Frenchman who had a very bad 72nd hole!

  • The most hilarious moment in golf history

  • Comment removed

  • I've been naturally brought here after watching Mcilroy press the self-destruct button at the Masters....

  • @oscarcanning Me too. What happened young Rory was sad but this was hilarious!

  • @oscarcanning I think this is worse than Mcilroy. Getting a couple bogeys and blowing a 4 shot lead before totally fizzling out has happened before. But to meltdown like this on the 72nd hole is insanity.

  • This was the greatest episode in golf history.

  • I remember watching this at home when it was going down.

    The horror!

  • what the f was his caddie doin? first off iron off the tee. short iron layup. he misses that putt on 18 he misses the playoff. prolly woulda been better if he did.

  • Jean van de Velde. Possibly the worst selection of 72nd hole shots in the history of the game.

  • oh i thought he accually had an heart attack and collapsed

  • the stupidest golf shot ever played=2nd by van be velde

  • KUDOS for your inspirations!! ARNIE has also inspired his many SENIORS IN prostate AWARENESS;perhaps your venue can inspire your many Senior members in Vision "awareness...AMD(macular degeneration." AMD has now surpassed Prostate cancer in statistics(Novartis.com). A silent anomaly, AMD needs your HELP in awareness!!!

  • Failgasm!

  • You can rip the audio-mp3 of this vid at grabaudionow doht cohm.

  • HAHA!!!! Sux for him!

  • lolz

  • I wonder what happened to him???

  • Of course you fail to mention his reaction when he finally holes out - I WON!!!! Oh. WHAT AN IDIOT

  • Incredibly stupid!

  • poor guy

  • i remember that he messed his chance to win the open but it was over shadowed by JFK jr. coverage

  • PENGUIN!!

  • He can take as many as 6 shots, and still win.

    Whoops...

  • is french.....

  • @hurtdiga lol

  • This was much like "Tin Cup" in actual real life.

I can recall rather well having watched this on live t.v. with my dad when I was 11 years old.

  • 0:46: Tiger's pissed!

  • Garrigus at the St. Jude is just about matching this.

  • no one even remembers who won this tournament. oh yeah some guy named Paul Laurie. lol.

  • my last name is vandvelde :)

  • Tin cup, anyone?

  • He is FRENCH, its not a disaster, its a RIOT! :-)

  • that made me sound really harsh anyone with a good drive on them could make double bogey sorry any 16+ handicap golfers

  • mcdb06 i'm sorry but a 16 handicap could and would be able to make a double bogey on this hole its only 444 yards today!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I don't think most people could ever understand the amount of pressure and nerves associated with a moment like that. The truth of the matter is he got a horribly bad break with the ball ricocheting off of the grandstand. If that ball does anything else besides that he would have won easily because he would have been able to drop right there and hit only his 3rd shot onto the green. He would have made bogey at worst. This was more bad luck and maybe a bad decision than a choke.

  • Carnastie!

  • his caddy at that time was going to get ice cream

  • im not a golfer, he is a fucking loser and this is what he is remebered for

  • i watched this live, ill never forget it

  • what a fuckin loser

  • he could have played the entire hole with a 7i and still won had he kept it in the short stuff. dbl bogey to win? i could have done that haha

  • And yet there is beauty in failing sometimes.

The intensity of drama is breathtaking here. Nowadays only sports can provide us with that.

  • Jean Van de Velde (born 29 May 1966) is a French golfer who is known mainly for his loss at The Open Championship in 1999.

  • where was his caddy during this ordeal?

  • impressive but still a distant second to greg norman's collapse at the masters, handing the green jacket to the prick faldo.

  • When he takes his tee shot there are two idiots kneeling on the ground at the bottom left hand corner of the screen. I am the one on the right hand side as we see it. My only claim to fame, Ever. Impressive huh!!

  • so sad....

  • Howard invented golf. Hoo-hoo

  • Howard stern suuuuucks...go fack urself

  • your mom sucks dick for OnA virus Stickers

  • Ur a fuckin Howard stern faggot...go fuck yourself

  • wow

  • carnoustie westfield sewage get dumped directly into that burn hahaha

  • its funny as hell when they play the background music at 2:00 n his wife was laughin at him lol

  • typical french arrogance. you're lucky the americans saved your surrending asses....twice.

otherwise it would be called paris-burg

  • @beergut

Twice? The Germans were going to lose WW1 whether or not the US joined the war. They didn't have the industrial complex to sustain the fighting. Typical American stupidity.

  • calm down kid, it aint that big of a deal.

    relax.

  • I am pretty relaxed, thanks :)

  • bottled

  • Typical French arrogant => stupidity => failure....but hey it was crowd pleasing stuff!!!

  • he holed the bunker shot for a playoff???

  • suce ma bite espece de merde!

  • Ouch

  • most stupid thing I ever seen.

  • he should have gotten on the green in AT LEAST four and two putt, I could do that?????

  • The mistake was the drive. He struck the 2nd shot perfectly and was unbelievably unlucky to bounce back off the stand AND then off a piece of concrete. He should have hit two iron shots short of the burn.

  • Why the hell didn't his caddy pull him over and say "Get the fuck out the water, drop the shot and win the Claret Jug!!" It really does show the importance of a good caddy, van de Velde just didn't have one.

  • Why on earth must you people make this a French/American battle in these comments? I don't care who you are, you had to feel sorry for Van de Velde for the way he heartbreakingly butchered the 72nd hole.

  • nice name man

  • You can compare this to the Phil Mickelson choke at the US Open a couple of years ago. Yeah, you feel sorry for them at first, but hindsight being 20/20, the pity wears off fast. Because in van de Velde's and Mickelson's collapses, both players made more than 1 stupid mental error on the 72 hole. Errors that most amateur players wouldn't even make.

  • hahahh french people hahaha

  • These yanks must have short memories cuz from wot i remember kenny perry let a 2 shot lead go in d masters. And phil mickleson butchered d US open in Winged Foot. Not as big a collapse as Van de Velde but they still fucked up with one hand on d trophy. So ease off with ur anti-french comments

  • Throwing up all over oneself in the final round of a major is a phenomenon that discriminates against no particular nationality.

  • @mcdb06 Perry let a 2 shot lead with 2 to go slip away, not unheard of. Mickelson also only had a 1 shot lead with 1 to go and made double bogey. Colin Montgomerie also double bogeyed the same hole and Furyk bogeyed it. The only reason the champion Geoff Ogilvy won was because he made a 7 footer for par on 18. This is definitely the biggest collapse ever.

  • @ktrice1 Not argueing that it isnt the biggest collapse ever. My post was in response to the anti-French comments left by other people. I'm sayin plenty of other golfers have cocked up on their closing holes, (not as dramatically as van de velde) and let majors slips through their hands

  • @mcdb06

yea but everyone loves to make fun of the french, for many more reasons than jean. Not trying to be an ass, but it's true. This years world cup further fueled the fire.

  • I'm an American..and I agree with you...Phil's collapse was just as bad if not worse just because he'd already choked away a few majors before winged foot AND because he LOST it right there on 18...Van de Velde still could've won in the playoff

  • @mcdb06 yes they do have short memories, because neither of those had happened yet.

  • Comment removed

  • @Ot555xzx It refers to the fact that a lot of the anti-french comments by some American's on this video cant exactly criticise Van de Velde's collapse (using anti-French comments) when a number of their own golfers have collapsed over d closing holes of majors as well. When they commented on this video those other events had happened

  • @mcdb06 there are no anti-french comments (???)

  • @Ot555xzx If u look back far enough on the comments page u'll see there are some

  • @mcdb06 Bogey Bogey finish which Perry had in the final round of 2009 Masters can happen to anyone & occurs most of the time in the final round of a major. As for Mickleson, double bogey on the final hole of major is not a one-off, it happens. Van de velde's collapse is legendary bcuz of his poor decision-making as opposed to getting triple bogey. Took a driver of the tee when he had 3 shot advantage, poor 2nd shot decision-making + comedy of actually thinking he can advance d ball in d water

  • no!

  • ive played this course..bad drive so laid up hit green 3rd shot 2 putted..open mine..dick head frog..durrrr!

  • @mcdb06 tu es un idiot

  • @mcdb06 thank you.

  • Comment removed

  • did he won the tournament?

  • No, he lost in a playoff. Paul Lawrie won it.

  • Please stop your insults against Frenchmen. There are stupid and 'bourgeois' persons in each country, even yours. It's unpleasant to earn World's hatred because of one guy. Just have fun watchin this ;-)

  • @Sylou41 Given the nazi-like atrocities that my country is demonically emulating everyday in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo, Abhu Grahib, and countless secret prisons tucked away in Eastern Europe, and now in New York City (google: syed fahed hashmi), we Americans should worry about a far more important legacy than the one being debated here.

  • Namely, a legacy of hubris and incomprehensble gullibility and ignorance, which has ushered in a deeply-militarized, neo-fascist nation-state, which has unleashed an overwhelming (and pathological) military force upon the Islamic states in their war against Islam (and any free countries who have defied the NWO).

  • A typical 'bourgeois' french golfer, great gear but cant play to save his life. Sorry Jean stick to drinking champagne at the club house or driving around in your 1999 Porsche.

  • Yeah right, and american golfers are driving in Skoda and Ford Fiesta and drink mineral water at cocktails, right.

Thanks for opening my eyes ! Perhaps I'm a typical french bourgeois also, who knows ?

  • The funny thing is, he could have hit an 8 or 9 iron three times to get to the green, then two putt for bogey, and still win by 2 strokes!

  • thanks! I have been finding this video for my dad for a long time!

  • What more would you expect from a frenchman? When the heat is on they are the biggest pussies on the planet. If an American had come to the rescue and hit his last shots for him he may have had a fighting chance. Hey, at least he didn't run off the course and hide - that actually is pretty impressive for a Frenchman.

  • yeah right, ask La Fayette who were the first pussies in history when he came to deliver you against the roastbeefs, you jerk...

All these americans jealous of France because it's the greatest country in the world... I feel sad for you.

Keep your stupid golfers and we keep our history, culture and gastronomy.

  • well you must be the best ever

  • i also eagled the par 5 6th...Hogan never managed that

  • what an idiot

  • move over Greg Norman we have got a new choker.

  • 50/50 ?! no wonder u choked, u don't understand the game. its 90% mental when relaxed, and in tournies, 100%

, about the vid .. only way jean vivi melt down would be more epic is if he played that water shot.

to see mud on his face as he melted and choked would've been shakespearean.

  • this is the reason i dont play golf anymore, whenever i was doing well in a competition i would start messing up towards the end EVERY time and would get really mad at my self for days after.. imo golf is 50/50 mental game/skill, too bad im not brainy

  • epically retarded trying to get over the burn from the tall grass

  • i would legitimately shoot myself in the face

  • As opposed to illegitimately?

  • Fist pump and yell and 4:51 ROFL

  • bravery followed the madness lol

  • Biggest meltdown in golf ever.

  • The greatest Open collapse of all time...

  • Up there with Gary Anderson.

    Chokejobs are not fun.

  • If he had won no-one would remember it. Its not much consolations but at least now he will be remembered in golfing history. Without doubt the worst major meltdown.

  • why would anyone play for a double bogey???? cuz he needs that to win a freakin open dumb ass. all he needed to do was hit the tee shot dry done. then 2nd shot wasnt terribly dumb he just got unlucky. what he should have done after his 2nd was hit his third out of the junk and into the fairway then he is a pitch and two putts away from winning and most pros do that with regularity ease

  • Thats still a six if he chips out, chips on and two putts :|

  • Biggest choke/collapse I ever seen in golf.

  • Water, sand, rough you name it! he got them all in one round. I was just wondering if he's already forgiven himself for this.

I'd kill the caddy if I were him!

  • When he teed off, he was only two clear - he didn't know Leonard was about to bogey up ahead, which DID then put him three clear.

Going for the green with his second was absolutely correct - he could afford a double-bogey, so all he had to do was clear the water. To bounce off the stands back into the rough in front of the stream was incredibly unlucky, and that's what cost him. Maybe he got too cute with his third shot, but none of his actual shot selections were wrong.

  • Why would anyone play for a double bogey though? You have to play your game as if you would normally do.

  • I'm not suggesting he was playing for a double bogey, merely that the percentage shot after his drive was to go for the green.

The lay-up would have been harder, because of the angle & the very narrow strip of fairway he'd have been aiming at.

But I guess his tactics will be debated till the end of time....

  • Fair enough, I accept your point. I probably wouldn't have taken driver to start with though, perhaps a 3 wood might have been a better option. It is one tough hole though!

I think Monty's collapse in th '06 US open was probably worse, as was Mickelsons at the same tournament.

  • If he had a experienced caddy this wouldn't have happened. The caddy should have kicked his ass for even asking for the driver, and then punched him out when he asked for that 4 iron. Still one of the all time golf F*#@ Ups. Love it

  • I remember this day so clearly, I was in my home office on the computer with the TV on, more listening than watching, then something made me look up and what I saw had me in stitches. To this day, I can reply his entire demise in my head and giggle. I tell this story (and payne stewart's final win) any time people say golf is boring. I think its dramatic. Thanks for loading.

  • He hit a good drive and if he hit a wedge in the fairway, he would have guaranteed a victory. Even though he said this event did not affect him, it surely did looking at his record since the open.

  • Water idiot.

  • The "bitch" laughing at him was - I believe - Mrs van der Velde, his wife.

  • where did you get this clip??????????

  • les francais c toute d con hahahahahaha osti de CAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • poor guy, who was that bitch laughing at him

  • A team mate, and a close friend of him.

  • HIS WIFE!!!

  • its got to be the biggest meltdown in history.

With each shot the madness increases .

His caddie should have slapped some sense into him after the drive.

  • he should have slapped him when he pulled out the driver in the first place....remember mickelson at the US Open a few years back? all mickelson and van de velde needed to do was just hit irons to the green and win

  • this was one of the most ridiculous things i have ever seen , on saturday at close i thought he couldnt be caught and he was still 16,1 what a plonker in the words of delboy

  • Don't be jealous... the french also hate all of you ah ah !

  • that guy who won has some serious eyebrows.

  • I can't help but think that this is just a terrible golfer who managed to trick himself into thinking he was really good due to the planets aligning for him the previous 2 weeks

  • The french, still producing the greatest second-raters in the world

  • Epic fail.

  • I was working on the scoreboard in the village during this. They (the organisers) were busy discussing over he radio what congratulations message to put on the main board when he finished.

Then it came over that he had gone in the burn. We all abandoned post and bolted over to the 18th to watch the tragedy. Couldn't believe it and felt sorry for the guy, until Paul Lawrie won!

  • now if he had a hybrid from today instead of a 2-iron...who knows, haha

  • poor bugger

  • Has to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen......period. Safety is almost sac-religious for the french....classic.

  • i feel bad for Van de Velde :( .... he's probably thinking this collapse nowadays because he's golf is not good anymore...

  • thats the french 4 u

  • LMAO what an idiot. My dad was loving every moment of this.

  • i feel for him

  • ive played carnoustie..hit a bad drive ..laid up, chipped on..2 putted..5! why didnt he do it?

  • I remember the uk commentary. peter allis was doing his nut when he was taking his shoes off to try and play out the burn

  • (In very long emphasis) Why, in the hell, would someone think to hit a 2 iron with a three shot on the approach after getting lucky on the drive. This guy deserved to lose by making that damn decision.

  • His problem is not loosing
