Only 2 things both at the rider, 1 Helmet..., 2 look at where you are going, not down, that makes your horse think he should be seeing something, like maybe something might come out from under it.
I love how you give him pretty much all the reigns allowing him to lower his head and take a really good look at what he's doing. Well done :D Obvious trust :)
I'm seldomly forgetting my helmet, but I have seen quite some people get hurt because of their helmet. Maybe we should start a Pro-well-fitted-helmet-campaign instead of just a pro helmet one...
Anyway ^^ I guess this neat trick is good for those unexpected moments on a trailride where you have to cross a small piece of dirt to get anywhere and make your horse aware of how to place her feet right? Is that beam made of anything specific? ^^
i agree totally with solarflare67, just before reading your comment this is what i thought! i know like you say there is some calculated risk but the most this horse would have done is scratched or grazed its leg it it fell off, horses are not made out of glass and are very tough. I bet this was great fun!!
Wow. Calm horse, calm rider, and someone with brains to build an obstacle like that so sturdily! We asked someone to build a pedestal as an obstacle for our barn and gave him some plans we found on the internet and after he saw what we were going to do with it, he took the pedestal back and ultra reinforced it because he said the plans didn't have enough supports... hah. Now the thing weighs a ton, but a horse will never put a foot through it!
i can imagine my horse's face... everytime i take him somewhere new we stand still a bit so he can look around.. i bet he would hv looked at that and back at me like: "uve got to me kiddin me" xD
She was concentrating on the beam so much that it looks like she forget how to step down :L just think how handy this is if you even in an energency tho
Lotsa people are commenting as if horses are made of glass. Seriously, guys, the beam wasn't that high, it was plenty wide enough for the horse to walk, and there wasn't a whole lot of stuff close enough to hurt the horse should she fall off. If she fell off, she most likely would have been fine. No, there's no guarantee that she would not have been hurt, but there is a calculated risk in everything. This risk was not that high.
As for the video: Wow, neat trick and cute horse! Good job! :)
@kellycupcakekiller Watch the previous videos.. She worked on teaching the horse to walk across it on the ground before getting on it. The horse fell off a few times and then she learned to watch where she put her feet.
Great Job, I know a lot of people don't think that you are being safe but your only a foot of the ground!! This will also come in handy while trail riding in the mtns. some of the trails are very narrow and one side is mtn and the other is a drop off. I think that you did great!!
Beautiful horse. Good job at training him to walk on that. Only negative - Where's your helmet? I am totally PRO-helmet, and I hate to see riders taking their health/lives in their hands by not wearing one. Even with the most well trained. docile horse, anything can happen.
@MissMerMer1980 It's the norm for western riders to ride without a helmet. In any case, whatever discipline you are, people know the risk. It's their choice.
I don't think the balance beam part is dangerous..If humans do flips on it, I think its okay if a horse walks across it.. my problem is that there is gravel...if the horse was to fall, the landing could impale him...please be careful
Cute horse! he looks like a horse at my barn, Justin
Wow, that is really good, that the horse is really doing that. It really is very good, but still I think it is a bit dangourous, I mean, even the best horse can be bad :P They still are horses, animals, who can scare and run.
But really if you train this, if your horse can do this, really brillijant!!
I think that's good exercise for horses. They put the full energy to keep their balance and "survive" from that difficult thing, at least better than just walking around the yard.
See more videos of Sara under the account, knstaub. She is a good girl, and we have spent a lot of time working on this trail stuff. I want her to be a confident and sure footed girl, and she loves to come out and play in this "playground". When we started showing, she would baulk going in the arena alone, but after doing this trail work she is much better! PS, the beam is less than a foot off the ground, its not very high at all. Thanks for all the comments!
@onewishTB Your sarcastic comment is lame. Firstly, she obviously has built up a good bond with her horse. Secondly, she was letting the horse lower his head and clearly see where he was going. Horses aren't dumb you know, in the wild they didn't just stick to the wide open flat areas.
good for you! you just let the horse do its job and figure out where to place its feet instead of you interfering and trying to help "help". My horse would never do something like this :P
im not trying to be mean, but i really think you should wear a helmet, especially if your doing something like that.
