japan is just more practically implementive of new ideas. there culture allows them to do so. there technology isnt neccessarily more advanced, but rather you see a wider spectrum of different adaptive uses of these technologies and there active use in everyday life and culture.

You can literally do almost anything with a cellphone in Japan. Face-time? They got it 10 years ago. Watching live T.V? Also years ago. Everything we have on our phones, they had it years ago. Also fingerprint recognition technology to protect info. They use it as credit cards, personal I.D., transit passes, airline boarding tickets, keycards, etc.

In Europe you can watch live TV easily via DBV-H

Video calling is supported by European networks, and has been for many years (however, people don't even use it that much).

The whole personal ID, transit pass, keycards, etc. is admittedly much more advanced, but when I said they were "crappy" I meant in terms of hardware performance.

Almost any phone with Java or an Operating System (Smart-phone) can get an application to read/decode them.

I can't think of any phones without Java or an OS now.

If your phone doesn't have either of them, then you shouldn't be worrying about QR Codes :P
