Our new president is expanding government in such a way that it has become very troubling. Yes, there should be some government regulation in the economy but Obama is going too far.

I'm a young guy who grew up in the Clinton and Bush years. After Bush I became disillusioned with America. I wondered if it was the same country my great grandparents came from Mexico to. I wondered if this nation was still great. Obama as a person and as a candidate reaffirmed my faith in this great country. while the economy was doing WELL under clinton's reign, certain government restrictions were removed. big business MANIPULATED the removal of said restrictions by taking their companies overseas. bush tried to do a good thing by making it easier for 1st time owners to buy houses. the BANKS manipulated this, and approved loans from owners who put NO money down/had bad credit.

Reagan left a mountain of debt and the economy in shambles. It was under his watch that the US became a debtor nation. It was Reagan that labor laws were ignored. I could go on and on. I don't care what Americans have been brainwashed to believe, the facts speak for themselves.
I'm not a fan of Clinton, but he was the better of the two. He left the economy in decent shape, with a surplus.

Interest rates were high during the disastrous Carter presidency, but they went down during Reagan's presidency. There was a lot of debt because Reagan cut our taxes drastically and beefed up our defense budget to counter the threat from the Soviet Union. There was a Cold War going on, remember?

Don't forget that the unemployment rate went down from 7.1% to 5.5% from 1981 to 1989.
Tax cuts stimulate the economy because they encourage businesses to expand, thus creating more jobs. It also means more money in your own pocket so you could spend it however you want, helping the economy to recover. Our new president is expanding government in such a way that it has become very troubling. Yes, there should be some government regulation in the economy but Obama is going too far.

Actually, Reagan cut taxes for everybody, not just the rich. The rich help create jobs by growing their businesses and if we tax them too much factories will close and jobs will be lost, hurting our own economy.

Reagan's tax cuts did not lead to higher incomes, greater economic growth, increased employment or increased savings. It's ironic to note that when B.CLinton came into the presidency, taxes were adjusted significantly, and conservatives predicted a disaster and massive job loss. Tax cuts lead to increased tax revenue because the tax base is expanded when jobs are created due to the implementation of tax cuts.
It is pretty hard to say that the Reagan tax cuts were a failure when 16 million jobs were created in the 1980s as a result of it.
But then again, you're a smart guy and I respect your views. Sharing and debating each other's different perspectives is what America is all about. At least you respect mine and that's all that matters to me.

So, it will appear we will continue to disagree. In light of Clinton's tax policy - actually, the increase was on the top 1-2%, and 95% got a tax break, your thesis would be counter-intuitive. This country has the greatest disparity of income of any industrialized nation on the globe. Bush immediately cut tax rates on the wealthy with disastrous results. Yes, I work for the government, and yes I do have a graduate degree. But I'm not that smart. But this appears obvious. Maybe I'm wrong..

He's w/ the Hoover Inst., a pretty conservative group. One thing that comes out is Washington's ability to grow intellectually, morally, & in terms of his character. His major flaw-slavery. i dont show emotions that often, but i really cried when he won. maybe it was in some part to the sleep deprevation ( i live in germany) but it was just something different. we elect in general more centrist politicians, so there isnt as much emotion when someone wins as in the us, but it was more. i wasnt old enough to see the wall fall, but i was there when the first black president was elected. what a sign of strengh for democracy.

while the economy was doing WELL under clinton's reign, certain government restrictions were removed. big business MANIPULATED the removal of said restrictions by taking their companies overseas. bush tried to do a good thing by making it easier for 1st time owners to buy houses. the BANKS manipulated this, and approved loans from owners who put NO money down/had bad credit.
