New Generation airbus uses the sidestick (first used in fighter aircraft) and is fly-by-wire;
In boeing, only the 777 has fly-by-wire technology. everything else uses cables and pulleys. Controls are made using the yoke (most commonly used among airplanes from the cessna to the jumbos) not "manibela".
its an aural reminder that aircraft is in landing configuration less than 50 feet and that the thrust lever is still in the climb detent with speed decaying below the approach speed. action would be to retard the thrust lever to idle.
on a manually flown approach this is a reminder. on an auto land however this would be a command.
MNL, though it is the premier airport to the capital, has no functioning ILS. Another reason why the FAA and the Europeans downgraded the Philippines (Not PAL) to category 2. So this is a VOR-DME approach. Which is the best type of approach you can get coming into manila. Thank God the radar was finally replaced (or repaired?)
@kelmaks Are you sure? I am quite sure that MNL has ILS on Runway 06/24. There are many other reasons why a VOR/DME was used. Runway 13/31 doesn't have ILS, but that runway is seldom used for landing anyway.
@omar2726 If you are a pilot then I'm sure you haven't operated into MNL for the last couple of years. A lot of things have changed: there isn't an ILS facility in operation, RS NDB has been decommissioned, MNL ground is no longer 121.9, Rwy 13 now has an instrument approach and terminal 3 is now operational. Unfortunately some things have not changed as taxiway C is still in a shameful state.
@kelmaks Sorry, I'm not a pilot. I'll take your word for it, thanks! Just a question, do you mean that MNL doesn't have ILS for a long time already? Also, do you know what types of airplanes are allowed to land on 13? Are the narrow bodies allowed to land there also? That would mean a LAHSO before rwy 6/24 right? Thank you very much!
question lang po regarding departure and arrival procedures? do you set your deck lights to OFF position? katulad ng ginagawa sa amn ng mga cabin crews switching off the lights ng cabin?
the lights setting depends on the PF (that is the Pilot Flying). Whatever suits him better. Could be full bright, dim or none at all. But its always best to have lighting similar to the condition of flight so your eyes adjust better.
we always go to manila on night

where you on auto or manual? looks like a very very smooth landing.
does it feel different to use the "joystick" of the A320 compared to the usual "manibela" of older aircrafts?
I had a bad landing experience with A320 of PAL during it's early days in the PAL fleet. It felt like a combat pilot was piloting the aircraft.
But this one is soooooo smooth.

I've noticed Philippine airline pilots have a very smooth landing...

Palawan here's a thought:
Airbus - Uses Fly-by-wire and Joystick on almost all of there aircraft
Boeing - Uses Fly-by-wire and "Manibela"
But if comfort for pilots, I think the Airbus will be a choosing for them

the landing was flown manually evidenced by the disconnect chime around the 55 sec mark.

thats an SOP for any airplane flying at night... even in the bridge of ships...
para hindi ma strained yung mata ng pilots,...
