  • The Soto Zen monastery of Shasta Abbey in Mount Shasta, California, had at one time two electronic organs in small lofts at the rear of their main chapel (which also has stained glass windows). Certain Buddhist chants were set to hymn tunes by the founding abbess, who had once been an Anglican choirmistress.

  • Sounds so wonderful! I love to play the pipe organ as it is so much to play on! So sad that in the USA, the organ has become the thing of the past. Many church services that I have attended across the country, has abandon the organ and the piano has taken the place of the organ. The home organ is already gone as all there is left is Lowrey being the only manufacture of home organs in the USA.

  • @patsaxon Lowrey organs are not worth the wood they're made of. There are many pipe organ manufacturers in the United States, and some of them (like Rodgers) build small, electronic organs for home use. They sound and operate much like church organs but don't have the flashing lights, rhythm boxes, and inferior tone quality of Lowrey, Hammond, or Baldwin organs.

  • As far as I know, only the Buddhist Churches of America, a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist organization uses organ as part of their liturgy. They are the oldest Buddhist organization in America, established around 100 years ago to serve Japanese immigrants. Organ and the singing of hymns was part of their desire to make their liturgy more "American." Some of the hymns from the early days are clearly reworkings of Christian works.

  • This is very similar to the organ I play in my church. Our is a 1962 Wicks 22 Rank organ, with a lighter wood console. Very similar though...

  • i would think that Buddists would not like this invation of Christian tradition in their temple... who knew! sounds great.

  • Haha...its a buddhist church not a buddhist traditional temple...in this video there is a statue of amitaba and in the pure land buddhism they pray to him

  • This is the 1st time I ever hear an organ in a Buddhist temple. How many organs are there in these temples? How are they used during the liturgy? Who has composed organ music for the Buddhist services?

  • See the expanded information in "About This Video"

  • It would be nice to hear some of the congregational singing with organ.

  • The Buddist Temple in Fresno, CA has an old C-3 Hammond and is used in a similar fashion to the pipe organ in the Hilo Temple. I played it years ago for a wedding with music ranging from Ave Maria to The Turtles. Yawn.

I recall seeing the exterior of the Hilo Temple 25 years ago. It is quite spectacular.

    Good job Scott and Bob!

  • Yes, I'm playing the finale to "Easter Proclamation" a choral anthem that I composed. --Rick Mazurowski, organist.

  • That rules having a pipe organ in a Buddhist temple. Thats a great organ.

  • Ooooh! It's a Wicks! I love it... great sound. And such a lovely space... I wonder if anyone knows what he's playing.
