  • I remember hearing this on Captain Kangaroo

  • That's my name!!

  • My mother told me my father, who died suddenly when I was young, loved this song. Thanks for posting this because it is a connection to him.

  • Cool song. I also know it sung by the Hilltoppers

    .

  • One of the first 78 RPM's I can remember playing as a pre-K'er. Still trying to locate Are You Satisfied/ Humdinger by Sheb Woolley, (Had it on an M-G-M 78.)

  • My daddy always sang the refrain to me since I was a toddler. Before he died, he even tried to sing it to me. This song is so special and the entire song is so true to my life. I love my husband and I miss my daddy!

  • I was in a casino in Lake Tahoe in the mid 60's and a group was singing this song. Their lyrics were different. they went, all day all night Marianne, who the hell you think I am Superman. My name is Marianne and everyone I was with cracked up. Actually, so did I.

  • ...used to wind up a friend of mine at university in Germany by playing this cheesy tune!

  • I was given this name at birth because my brother loved this song so much and my folks had thought I was going to be a boy (Mark).I didn'tt like my name for along time;and endured all the teasing re: Gilligan's Island-the fact is I am a shor t' girl next door' brunette type. I have come to appreciate the name & have fun with it over the years. This song is about a happy joyous person. FYI Dawn Wells who played Marianne is an absolutely gorgeous senior citizen-Thanks for sharing!

  • As fun as listening to the Hilltoppers' version is,I gotta admit this version by Terry Gilkyson beats it by a mile. Thanks for posting!

  • Best ever version was Harry Belafonte

  • Dave, not the wave, here. That thing in the water is most likely a porpoise, or if you prefer, a dolphin. Too friendly to be a shark. They probably fed him, or her and it's looking for handouts. Nice song. Heard it first in the early '60's.

  • It seems here are a lot of " Marianne`s ". Bye the way, my name is also Marianne. (smile ). Love this song!!!

  • Must have been in the very early '50's when this song was a hit for someone....don't remember who, but I was less than 10 yo and Mom would take us to the beach and we met a little girl named Mary Ann. Mom, me, baby brother and Mary Ann sang this song! Thanks for the memories!

  • It was a hit for Terry Gilkyson and The Easy Riders.

  • @Azishome you is right they did it in the 50ties

  • I always knew the chorus from my childhood. Now I must learn the whole song to sing around the campfire!

  • what the hell is that thing in the water?!?

  • It's a dolphin I went to shark bay back in 1989 we stayed in a caravan on the beach and in the morning fed the dolphins. My children took a dingy out to sea where the dolphins circled them which they believed to be sharks...ahhh

  • the songs about mwa

    lol

    xxmariannexx

  • Did the Easy Riders record Memories Are Made Of This on their own? And what about Yellow Bird. Anyone have their CD compilation?

Listen to Xavier Cugat's 1940s version of MaryAnn.

  • No, they recorded it with Dean Martin. That's the only version I've heard.

  • It turned out to be one of Frankie's best, also. Back then, you found entertainment where you could and the Gilkysons all engaged in bird watching. When Laine came out with Terry's record of "Cry of the WIld Goose,", he loosened some of the "local wags'" tongues. More than one conversation contained the statement:"All of the Gilkysons are bird watehers - But Terry's the only one that has made it pay off. Some real nostalgia, here. Thanks for posting.

  • Many years ago, I lived in the little hamlet of Mont Clare, PA. Odd as it seems, now, my house was about 900 or 1000 feet from a fairly wealthy family named Gilkyson. Yep, this was Terry's family, and some really nice people, too. They never lacked time to stop what they were doing and talk to the little neighbor boy. Especially Terry. I didn't understnd what he did for a living, then, but I sure do now! Frankie Laine recorded one of Terry's best songs:"Cry of the Wild Goose".

  • This song is about me :-) ;-)

    X Marianne

  • I'm a Marianne Too!!

  • We're playing this song on auto-harp in school...These guy sings it... oddly, from what I'm used to,

  • My Mom used to play this song for my sister and I when we were little....I cant beleive I found it!

  • Terry Gilkyson was previously a member of the legendary folk group, The Weavers, who are famous for such songs as "On Top Of Old Smoky" and "Goodnight Irene."

  • would you believe it i heard this song after 32 years !! many thanks.....

  • Maybe Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper were familiar with this group (from the late 1950's) when they titled their 1969 film. The song is featured on Time-Life's Cd collection The Fabulous 1950s. In any event it's good to hear again this percursor to Jimmy Buffet, et al. Thanks.

  • i can't beleve i found this on youtube

  • Thanks for posting this

  • Your very welcome vinylsingleman

  • I first heard this song on an old cassette I bought at a yard sale about 8 years ago. I loved its easy melody and apperant obscurity. One day that old cassette fried in my car underneath an intense summer sunshine.

I have spent months trying to locate this song.

I, too, used to sing it to an old girlfriends middle daughter named marianne. Funny, I miss her daughters more than I miss her.

What great memories. Thanks for posting this song!!!!

  • my pleasure joflo82

  • @joflo82

I met an elderly woman 2 years ago who in conversation told me about a song that was written for her. She sang it so sweetly in the sweetest little voice. One day when I was thinking about her, I looked up the lyrics and found this youtube video. She taught dance for many years in NYC. Lovely and beautiful woman, even to this day. :)

  • this song is so hard to find

  • i just love this song!!

  • this is a fabulous post!

my mom used to sing this to me when i was a child..and she still did when i was older :))

  • One of my first childhood memories ,I must have been about 4 years old, and sitting in a sand pit listening to this song. Nostalgia is wonderful
