Hey, everyone has their own views regarding religion. Leave the god and stuff out of it in regards to those who died in the event. I'm sure some found comfort in their faith, whichever faith that may have been. I am an atheist, and I only ask why are you using this incident as a way to bash faiths? THAT is not necessary. Just let it go.
A famous person who sacrifices himself to save others? Any "celebrity" now would just be escorted by a dozen security guards and wouldn't even care about the people who died.
@GrrrIamMad That's maritimers for you though; the politest and kindest people in the whole country. I'm from Ontario myself; sure there's a few nice people around here and there but there's no one like those folks out east.
It's easy to be angry at god but think out side the box. yes we all miss stan but it would be selfish to keep him here. he is in gods arms and enjoying every pleasure and blessing heaven has. some day we will share a case of guiness see ya on the flip side stan!
Ahhhh!!! would you not help a friend in need even if it was someone you did not know, that is kindness all the way....either we have it in us or we are greedy and selfish people...I would help the less fortunate or the needy forsure...But I am Canadian....Remember 9 11...Well I am Newfie....So remember all we done for that!!!!
Jacqui you have no idea how great this man was....Research him and then his son Nathan....he was awesome and his son is as well.....His wife Nathans mother must be a smiling proud widow/mother....I am only 34....he died when I was 9 years old but to me he is the greatest songwritter and poet ever.....Canada should be proud!!!
He went back up to the door and was shouting "Follow the sound of my voice," to the passengers that couldn't locate the exits. He died of smoke inhalation. It was a hero's death.
It was worth watching to learn more about the unfortunate circumstances of Stan Rogers' death, but I think "dramatizations" cheapen the tragic reality. The spoken word would suffice.
I was thinking how great this clip was to know a bit more about the terrible events took such a great man's life. But then they had to ruin it with the god crap. God is a real asshole if he took Stan Rogers from us and left us that pukey woman.
I agree. This 'God" is really vengeful, then again, "it's" the cause of the worlds problems and will be as long as man has fear of himself.....enough said!
Just because she is a survivor doesn't mean she is not out of line. My comment had nothing to do with taking anything out on anybody, that's just changing the subject.
You may consider it changing the subject, but I found the last part of your comment deeply disturbing after what the first woman said about survivor guilt.
For the record, I am not too fond of where her line of reasoning goes either. I just find it hard to blame her for taking what comfort she can from the situation. I also don't think such a short clip from a show where the producers felt the need to add background music to drive home the message necessarily reflects her personality.
I hate the god squad douche bags. Anything that they think is good is the result of their god, and anything they think is bad is the work of the Muslims, Jews, or women who speak their minds.
@Tadhg64 I think you're an asshole for suggesting a person you never knew should have died instead of someone else you never knew. As for the Almighty (since you seem to be angling for the job) how old should your favorite artists be before they're taken? How about the rest of us?
@silvi01977 you are right, i never knew Stan, but as a human being, I have to wonder why some things are the way they are. I think logically, shit, I sound like Spock, LOL , and things happen because of circumstance; not because of a "god." Thats my take on it, and in the meantime, i'll be singing songs all night, surrounded by me buddies, wishing this messed up world, a whole lot of Peace!
After quite a while I just listened to some of Stan's songs and the tears started to well up in my eyes. He was a large influence on my meager attemps to be a folksinger.
Beyond that he was not only the ultimate folksinger and songwriter, but must have been one of the finest men who ever graced this crazy planet. God bless you, Stan...
Stan music lives on and his legend grows. And thanks to his friend and producer Paul Mills, to his brother Garnet, to his wife Ariel and their son Nathan, Stan's memory is kept fresh in the mind of the music world.
Thanks for posting the video. This is a sad story for all of the losses.
Canada has produced many, many great folk singers, and folk groups. Lightfoot, as mentioned, Joni Mitchell, Buffy St. Marie, Bruce Cobourne, and on and on.
But Stan Rogers left a mark on folk music in Canada, and beyond, that is remarkable.
Each year, we close the Winnipeg Folk Festival on Sunday night by singing the "Mary Ellen Carter". His impact on folk music will never be forgotten.
Last Monday (June 2, 2008) was the 25th anniversary of his untimely death, and still he lives on!
I don't say this to diminish Stan Rogers or his music, which I dearly love to hear, but Canada produced a lot of great song writers. To my mind, one of the better ones was/is Gordon Lightfoot. His music transcended Canada, and produced several huge hits in the U. S. and beyond.
Such a tragic loss. I heard that Stan was helping people off the plane when he died and that he could have gotten off safely if he hadn't stayed to help others. The story may have been dramatized a bit, but it's still beautiful.
This story is not beautiful, nor is it true. Stan's death was tragic enough as it was, without trying to dramatize it or make it seem as if he could have lived, "if only"...
No, sir, the story is not beautiful (I agree)and those who survived were not in the plane when the critical flashover occurred. Moments before this, who knows for sure? Here are the facts: Stan was founds about 6 feet from the front right door, face down, pointed toward the back of the airplane. It is not illogical to conclude that he may have been turning around to continue his search for survivors still trapped in the plane. It is one of the few small condolences I have.
That's what I heard too. He could have survived the crash, but he insisted on staying in the plane and trying to help other passengers. I'm not sure if it's true, but if it is he was a hero in every sense of the word.
@nathanstansson By all accounts That's the type of man Stan was Nathan. Your Uncle Garnett probably Knew him best, I expect he would agree. If people were in trouble he would have been trying to help without regard for his own safety.
Even if that wasn't the case it's what I choose to believe. As for God, Stan's with God.
I had the pleasure to buy Stan and his brother a round during a show in the early 80's. They said they were expensive dates and they were, double black Russians all around, but well worth it. it's ironic that we talked about how poorly the airlines handled their guitars. That being said, I can see by the pilots emotions that they took the loss of life very hard and their heroics saved many lives.
The world of folk music, not less than the world of Canada, the world of humanity - we still weep to have lost Stan. For some stupid individual who started a fire in the airplane lavatory, for anyone who thinks their moment of pleasure is worth the loss for decades and centuries later of the power of the music that was Stan Rogers.
That's not how I understood the story; he could have got off the plane safely, but stayed to help others get off. A great musician, perhaps, but a great man also.
*shrugs* Just reporting what I heard is all. I can't remember how the story was first told to me, but it came about some time after my dad met Stan's widow... I can't say for sure whether he got it came from some other source though.
