2nd Battalion 105th Infantry was tasked by HM Smith to hold a 4 Battalion front and taking out a numerically superior Japanese force holding a good defensive position. He criticized the 2/105th Infantry for not rapidly overruning Nafutan point.
This is an example of the leadership qualities of the "brilliant" HM Smith.
I've been on that trail many time and I've seen those caves. Remember, it wasn't the Marines but the Army's 105th Inf. who battled the Japanese on Nafutan Point. The Japanese they fought were attached to the 47th Independent Mixed Brigade. They were all destroyed. Sure has grown up around those cannons.
@Skipjack16 Hi SkipJack. Thanks for the correction. I also see that I mentioned that the battle for Nafutan was 5 days. I should have said 9 days. Perhaps that 5 day mark was when Gen Smith pulled half the attacking force away to help with the Mount Tapachoa assault.
i'd hate to fall of that cliff

That looks like the BL 6inch Gun Mk7 British naval gun dating from around 1899, the British sold to the Japanese there was one on Saipan.
I didn't get to look at that one when I was there.
