Like someone said, this is a shoulder fired artillery-shell here, so you've got to have some way to deal with all that recoil.
The base of the shell has holes in it so that when the booster charge detonates, a roughly equal amount of gas goes out the front as goes out the back. This doesn't hurt muzzle velocity if done correctly (since only about 25% of the gas gets used to push the shell, anyway), and the result is an 84mm cannon with the felt recoil of a 12-gauge shotgun.
The "payload" is in the front and the behind is in essence a rocket propelled with "gunpowder" tubes, it has steel "wings" that unfolds when exiting the barrel with hinges mounted close to the nozzle, these stabilizes the flight just like a dart. So, there is only one hole ^^
The exiting gas propels the missile through the tube/barrel which are there in essence just to steer it in a direction.
There should be no real recoil, just some vibrations.
I better answer properly, it is a rocket with a payload, no guidance or anything, similar to an RPG or the pissant M-72, but it is in fact a rocket missile if you are very technical about it..
Just that the rocket is exhausted before it leaves the tube.
The unit is inserted at the rear and propels through the tube (weapon).
Once I was a bit stressed out and fired it in "rifleman position" lying down, that is, approx 60° angle to the barrel.. I can promise you I felt that. I thought I lost my leg.. when I dared look it was smoking. You are supposed to have 90° angle when fring lying down :P hehe..
my mistake.. it is a recoiless rifle. however the round is loaded in a jacket (like a bullet) and the back is then burnt off when the round is fired, making it recoiless.
I did this for 10 months in the Swedish army, great weapon. Requirments in sweden are 6 rounds in 2 standing targets at 300meter and 1 moving target (30km/h) at 200meters in less than 1 min... Keep practising guys :-)
I believe that man that was loading this Carl G, was MCpl Christopher Stannix. He was killed in Afghanistan on April 8th, 2007. RIP he will never be forgotten!!
It is a recoiless rifle because the barrel has rifling AND because once the initial charge shoots the round out of the barrel there is no further propulsion. The exception of that is HEAT-RAP rounds (High Explosive Anti-Tank Rocket Assisted Projectile), however that round is only one variant and does not change the classification of the weapon.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A 105 mm howitzer also has rifiling but we call it a gun not a rifle, so do hand guns. So its a shoulder mounted personal anti tank weapon. I have never heard it be called a rifle. And how can that round be possibly rocket assisted if there it no further propulsion after it leaves the barrel. Your info here is clashing.
because that's a training round. its a block of cement. i was talking about the live rounds. anyways, i didnt make the designation "recoiless rifle" i just know thats what its called.
The nomenclature for firearms has changed so much from reform to reform and as allies join forces across language barriers there is no cast in stone rule.
The fact is this is not DEFINED as a recoilless rifle but simply NAMED that back in a time and place when the rifle definition was applied differently.
If we go renaming things to follow definitions, then there would be more confusion. Like "Rocket Propelled Grenade" from RPG-7, it's in fact a mistranslation but the name stuck.
Actually it is technically referred to as the Carl Gustav 84mm Recoilless Rifle, and it is capable of firing rocket assisted projectiles. This weapon is one of the basic weapons that all army personnel in the Canadian Forces get trained on, and as a former Canadian infantry soldier, I can attest to this. Artillery pieces (whether rifled or smoothbore) are guns, pistols are pistols, and rifles are rifles.
It launches both slugs and rocket-propelled grenades, depending on what you load it with. There's like six or eight different kinds of ammo.
However, I laid next to a few of these babies during training. The force of the blastoff (training slugs being used - basically plain pieces of iron) attempted to move my cranium closer to my brain. The pressure is pretty amazing. If you have a cold while fireing it, it'll blow the snot out of your nose and all over your face.
The Carl Gustav is a section level anti-tank recoilless rifle and is one of the most widely fielded systems in the army. There are two versions of the Carl Gustav, the older M2 is on issue to almost every regular and reserve army unit and the newer lightweight M3 is held by the light infantry.
Says Recoilless Rifle if they say it then thats what it is
You are all wrong. It's a recoiless cannon. Yas, it has riflings inside of it, but fires a grenade shell. Not a full metal jacket bullet. And Yes, the shells are being rocket propelled after they have been fired out of the launch tube. The initial explosion is to get the granade out to a save distance before the rocket propulsion initiates. To prevent the operator from getting his head burned off.
It is a cannon, and called rcoilless because the tube is open in both ends, the munition is rocket propelled with the blast going out thru the rear end of the tube.. the propellant is cordite and consumed before the projectile/missile leaves the tube, or barrel. It is there only to guide and give rotation. the Same as m72 or RPG. This was my weapon back then ;)
Ok...Im sorry. i wrote..."belive". Was not 100%sure. But there is a charge egnitet and explodes/burns for a little time....like the KV_NM-72...its flyes to its target..with its momentum
LOL it fires cannon shells, not rockets. It's a RIFLE. It's barrel is RIFLED to SPIN the ROUND for STABILITY like any other RIFLE. The rounds do not have FINS nor they have ROCKET MOTORS.
Was my little darling when I did service :D Once in a stressed situation I did a mistake, lying down I entered the rifle shooting position (45 degree) and guess what... I barely dared look cause I thought my whole right foot was gone.. but phew it was still there, just smoking from tha trousers :P damn that backblast is a kicker hehe :)
I love this weapon, I have shot 50-100 rounds with it.

So you've fired one then? This is a recoiless rifle, not a shoulder launched rocket.
If you'd loaded one, you'd know that the 'payload' doesn't go in the front. Or you could have just watched the video to see that.

By that argument a rifle is a rocket launcher.

Correction, 30° angle to the barrel..
Kenzofeis 4 years ago
F*ck, I didn't sleep all night..
I lay at 30° angle when it was supposed to be 90°...
Kenzofeis 4 years ago
90 degrees staright up in the air?
area51er6 2 years ago
No, that would be unwise because of the backblast hehe....
When firing flares you may set for like 60 degrees elevation but you start to feel the ass getting kicked on then.
I ment you shall be in a straight angle to the barrel in the horizontal plane when firing it laying down.
Also, there must be no walls or stones or loose/light crap near and behind you.
And no people, it spits out plastic shrapnels from the igniter at high velocities.

Yeah and she sucks the snot out of your head when you fire her too...and LOUD! So bloody loud!
