We only went decimal in '73. in England. Most of us in the UK born before the '80s still think in miles not klicks. ( Kilometers. )
I saw this done in '79 with a long wire contact pickups and a hand wound flywheel accumulator. It was quite loud but sounded utterly different to what was expected.
You could here the flywheel running down which was unintended. The torque on the wire was driven by the wind and wailed like a very quiet banshee.
