Just booked up to see Barber, Bilk and Ball + bands, in Nottingham next February. It wont be the same without Pat. However, it will be interesting if the 80 year old "boys" can still rock.
I first saw CB at the Festival Hall London, in the early fifties, when they used to put on an intimate little sessions in the Recital Room . But I also used to see Pat play at the Hot Club of London at The Shakespeare Hotel in Woolwich, which was run by that pioneer of British jazz George Webb. Pat sometimes usd to sit in or do a guest spot with some of the other really great bands that were regular visitors to the Sunday night sessions. Have a long and happy retirement Pat.
I first heard PH down in Gerrard St in some unnamed JazzClub back in the early Fifties. He was one of the very best who kep up his standards right through more than half a century of JAZZ.Hats off!
I should have mentioned what a great video this tribute is. Well done to the compiler !!
I also note memories of the Southern Stompers. They introduced me to my love of jazz in the late '50,s. They had a singer called Pam Heagren and I saw them every Friday at the Norfolk Arms pub in North Wembley. Memories !!
Thanks for all, Pat. Your slaphappy solo in "Tight like that" back in the sixties was the beginning of my career as jazz trumpeter. I'l never forget that. We once met in Zurich (Albisguetli musician room) discussing practice techniques.
First saw Pat with the CB band at the White Hart Southall pub in the mid-fifties - last saw him at the Farnham Maltings in the mid-nineties when Chris Barber said "don't leave it for another forty years, we shan't be around!". Thanks for posting - what great memories and what great musicians!
I did as well and we we were lucky to be living in the area at the time...Crane River and all that just up the road at Cranford. Pat apart from a great musician is a true gent as well.
Ah yes - the Crane River band! And I was a 50's regular to see Steve Lane and the Southern Stompers at the Fox and Goose in Hanger Lane.
I met him too at the Farnham Maltings 50 years later (looking exactly like Manuel of Fawlty Towers) and, when I told him of the F&G, he simply said "We still play there"!!!!
Oh, and 100 Oxford St. with Humph and Cy Laurie's nearby - both sadly gone but not in my memory.
@fatsfan70 Yes, great times at the F&G in the early 50s then ,later at Wembley. I first heared Steve & Co at the WOOD GREEN JAZZ CLUB ! wonderful.! a very underated band in my opinion. I also remember going to play cards with Steve & a few other "fans" after sessions at the F&G.......We were all a bit younger then!
@MrPetepohl1 A schoolboy friend of mine introduced me to jazz in the late'40s and we pushbiked all over London to visit jazz clubs and pubs. He played trombone and actually joined Steve Lane for a couple of years. We lost addresses (Nat. service/marriage/moving) but are now back in touch after forty years and correspond regularly by phone and email, re-living happy times and sharing music.
Unfortnatley, but there is a time of coming and a time to go, 54 years, unbelievable what a time, they enyoys me many time, take care Pat Halcox and thanks a lot for all the hours you enjoy me and many others!!
Really great stuff. I was in the NZ Air Force and was sent to train in Bomber Command in 1958 and I saw a Barber concert in Cambridgeshire in that year. The originals were performing and I have never forgotten them! Ian

Pat regularly dropped into the Viaduct at Hanwell on a Sunday evening, run by Steve Lane with the residency of Colin Kingwell's Jazz Bandits.
Wonderful times.

Well done! A well deserved tribute to a very fine player who is a modest man and gave us so much pleasure.
