I wish they did Mr. Freeze like they did with Doc Ock in Spider-man2, have Mr. Freeze feel responsible for his wife condition, then have do this bad thing to save her and finally have him sacrifice himself to save her.
I use to call this movie, the more sensible alternative to 'Batman & Robin'. Sure, it's 100 times better than that movie, and Mr. Freeze is treated much better here, but compared say 'Mask Of The Phantasm', or 'Return Of The Joker', it's A bit lackluster. Still A good movie, but some of the issues it has kinda bring it down A bit.
I did like this but i see ur points. its also a bit of a hitch to the robin & batgirl relationship that batgirl seems to end up having feelings for batman
I'm sad to admit you're right! but I still like this animated movie! Now one I want you to review someday because I've never seen it is the Batwoman movie they made because I hear it's bad!

another great review, afraid i haven't seen this one. I tried rewatching your top ten batman TAS but its been removed, so is another vid on your channel. where can i find it?
i am amazed someone other than me doesn't like this movie. i saw it, long before i heard of Batman and Robin, and thought "eeh", NOT comparing it to Phantasm. Drawn out with nothing to say is certainly the issue for me as well; the one thing that grates my brain is that the movie, for a long time, had better ratings than Phantasm 'til Red Hood came along in the animated batman movies ratings. but, that's just me
I have about a minute to comment and its hard for me to get back to these Super Hero Rewinds (Youtube's new design yay >_>) so I'll risk looking like a fool by just asking.
Cap, the numbers you ran were for AB or AB-? I always had a hard time with the positive/minus aspect. Why is it so hard to believe that the DONOR LIST in Gotham only contained 18 hits? Was that even all hospitals in Gotham or just one? Don't they prefer donor organs be a close match for sex, age, and for blood-type?
Man, Cap. you are a tough guy to please about all this. The film is okay, but the Freeze story drew me in, but the Barbara stuff pulled me out, just didn't like her.
@Geekvolution What are the chances of doing a full series review/overview of Batman: The Animated Series? 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the show, A great series, whose Fleisher-esqe influence remains timeless amidst the dreck that has followed it. I'd also like your opinions on some of the lesser shows like The Batman and Batman: Btave and the Bold.
In short, it was the Iron Man 2 to the near perfect Iron Man. If Mr. Freeze were first rather than Phantasm it may have been considered more favorably. Or I'm wrong and not close. Lol.
while do agree with ur review, I think ur nitpicking more than u needed to on it due to such respect for the show and the writers if u get what I mean
But when you're right, you're right. I, personally, would have rated SubZero higher. But you were dead on about the lack of character-driven plot.
I thought this was a bit more about Batgirl
than Batman or Robin. It would have been nice to see her name in the title. Batgirl and Robin. I like the sound of that. The chase scene between Barbara and Freis was fantastic! It reminded me of the Batman/Freis level in Arkham City, which would be very difficu
What are you talking about? Batman Returns was the worest movie, unlike Catwoman and Batman and Robin they didn't make me feel dead inside. Batman and Robin is not that bad if kid made this movie. Why are repeating the words you posted? Please tell me thats not your room?
While i total get what he is saying. And agree with most of the "nitpicking".
You could easily shread/ nitpick either of the Nolan Batmans OR the best of the animated series.
Sure its slightly dumbed down for kids and there was a MAJOR marketing reason for everything about this film. BUT- it was a decent story and entertaining movie with FANTASTIC animation. Id say its better than most of the current animated movies DC rolls out.
You should review Avatar the last air bender show. I thought it was well written. There are more charactor arc in the 20 min ep than the whole stupid movie. that's what upset me most about the movie.
I agree that this film isn't a great film, it has good animation and a somewhat good story, but it felt like it was just 3 episodes blended together, kind of like "World's Finest" except that had a more intriguing story. Michael Ansara did a great job voicing Mr. Freeze as he always does and the rest of the cast does well also. The story with the blood is too similar to Alfred needing a cure in B&R as well.
maybe if this movie is on its own mr freeze had no real consequences, but in the sequel cold comfort from the new adventures series, mr freeze himself gets a disease and is only left with a head and robot body, which leads to him seeing the world as a cold place again. good luck with blade trinity!
fair and just analisis to which I agree this film is not bad, fits better when tied into series, phantasm and return of the joker outshine this but this works well in selling the emotions, visual look/animation.Liked it when younger, not my favorite but better than mystery of batwomen,even/sightly below to batman vs superman movie/3 parter which will hopefully be reviewed down the line.great rewind.I trust you wont forget to mention the link between hannible king and deadpool in your next rewind?
O_O I know this movie is subpar compared to the series and Mask of the Phantasm, but it's also tons better and tons smarter than Batman 89, a movie you gave a much higher review for. I'm in shock.
@King191912 LOL As I've said before, I wasn't very objective about '89, and that was one of my first reviews before I had really solidified what this series was going to be. It's smarter in the sense that there's a logical progression. I gave it a 2 because I found it really average.
@Geekvolution I still think that's being a little harsh, but whatever. Part of that could just be that I consider Batman: Mask of the Phantasm to be a little overrated. >_>
I was surprised that SubZero was utilizing the art design from the original run of the Animated Series as supposed to art design from New Adventures which was running around the same time.
As for Subzero and Mystery of Batwoman they were decent. Although I hated that Barbara was simply a damsel in distress in Subzero. Great animation (as usual) but the stories are no larger than a series episode.
@TheMantaBluRay I *think* this was actually the transition between those series, so they were just about to make the switch over to the new art design.
@Geekvolution SubZero does chronologically take place between the original episode [Deep Freeze] and the new episode [Cold Comfort]. However according to Wikipedia, Cold Comfort premiered September 1997 while Subzero was released in March 1998. But to fans I would recommend them to first watch Heart of Ice, then Deep Freeze, Subzero movie, Cold Comfort, and finally Meltdown.
to me this movie was always boring to me. Mask of the Phatnasm also was to me but not as dull. The only one I really love is Return of the Joker. And (at least) Robin doesn't know that Batgirl is Barbara.
...but overall this story did just feel stretched out to me. In terms of narrative not much is happening, bottom line, this could have been one episode and still worked. I would not be surprised if it started out that way and was stretched out to make a film just to go with Batman & Robin. What would have been cool, is if at the end Freeze thanked Batman, and Bruce Wayne, while implying that he knew the two men were one and the same. End of Freeze's story.
I totally 100% agree with you Captain Logan, I saw this movie once a few years ago, and just found it hard to sit through. the story was un-engaging to me, and just kinda boring. I wanted to get into Mr. Freeze's head here, but I didn't get that. I also thought that this should have ended his story, which I do think would have been better than him returning as a head in jar in season 4. although it was cool to see him come back in Batman Beyond in that super bad-ass armor...
i still like this movie as much as the first time i saw it. is it better than MOTP.. no.. is it a good movie yes. it's a movie you put in and just sit back have have some fun with. even the worst episode of BTAS is way better than some majior movies. There are somethings you just don't need to know. and all you need to know is this is what is going on and this is what needs to be done and i'm fine with that. 3.5 out of 5. So whats next Mystery Of The Batwoman?
@hyuthestampede Simply put, I don't like Mask of the Phantasm. Does it need any more explanation than that? I've always thought Mask was overly hyped, whereas I agree that Sub Zero isn't a masterpiece, but I still like it more, probably because it ISN'T overly hyped, and I went in with more reasonable expectations.
Except he seems to think it IS a better film, and with the character limit on Youtube that can be really hard to explain in posts. I shrugged off Mask of the Phantasm when it came out for a few reasons, though I did pick up the comic book adaptation just to get the story.
I really need to watch it again, and Sub-Zero before I make a call on it. Mask of the Phantasm always felt "forced" to me, not unlike Cap's complaints about Sub-Zero. ;)
@KamisamanoOtaku but it's not, part of the reason is probably he(and a lot of people) does not get what makes batman and his villains so interesting and relatable, like i said to him "preference" is fine. you can't expect quality to change someones preference.
but what i do expect is for people to Recognise quality when they see it. i can only fathom people can't do this because they aren't educated enough to spot good quality when they watch it!
@KamisamanoOtaku you got in reverse, im saying that (seeing as i have to spell this out) if he prefers Subzero over MOTP that's perfetly fine but if he needs to bash MOTP to show he Prefers something else that's not really recognising that MOTP is in fact the better film in terms of Character, plot, setting, consistancy ect.
I had always thought that using Barbara the way the movie did was somehow a vague reference to "The Killing Joke" graphic novel, where *SPOILER* Barbara gets attacked there again not because she's Batgirl but because of a secondary connection to the events in action.
I want to strap Joel Shoemaker in a chair, put clips in his eyes and force him to watch Sub Zero for hours. He'll soon learn that Batman isn't campy and bright.
Mystery of the Batwoman is the only one left for the BTAS review films. Also will you be doing a review on "The Batman" series and direct to dvd film? I might be one of the few fans of that series even thought it really wasn't up to BTAS quality. Great reviews Captain, keep up the good work. Your Watchmen review was the best one yet.
Good question. While not BTAS caliber I enjoyed it myself, especially for certain approaches to characters I felt were novel. Plus the irony of BTAS making perhaps too many villains sympathetic, at times it was nice to watch The Batman and know the bad guys were the bad guys and not tragic, misunderstood, yada yada.
Having to compete against a knock out record of the animated series and mask it had a lot to live up to, but your review was spot on. Too many what if's and fascinating directions that weren't explored.
The audio files for Freeze in Arkham city were spot on about how compelling and conflicted the character is and it's sad a cured Nora couldn't be used to explore that.
Shame Mr. Freeze's happiness doesn't last through the New Batman Adventures or whatever Batman TAS was called after the art shift. Speaking of that, have you ever discussed that or art shifts in general in your shows?
Correct me if i'm wrong, but Dick didn't know that Barb was Batgirl at this point. It was revealed in the The episode where Dick quits as Robin that he didn't know, but Bruce did all along. Maybe that's why Bruce wasn't super concered about her. He knew she could take care of her self.
@0ACapedCrusader0 I believe you're right, but this being a stand-alone movie that's already covering a lot of ground viewers would know if they knew the series already, should have told us that.
Great points cap. I haven't seen this film in quite a while either but i'll have to check it out sometime. Oh and btw your math segment was hilarious, that was a great way to point out how contrived that plot point was.
I actually really enjoyed this, not as much as "Mask Of The Phantasm" but it was still good. It was a damn site better than Joel Shumachers pieces of crap that's for sure!
Will you review Batman: Under the Red Hood? It's a great Batman movie.

@sebastiandahero
