Worst trying to make him like hes all tough and can tell the baddest joe of them all what to to dude. CM==continue mission... thats why DUKE DIED IN THE CARTOON MOVIE (homo)...
@Ares99999 Because Duke is NOT with Scarlett. Scarlett is only with Snake Eyes in the comics. Why does everyone kiss up to that silly 80's cartoon that was only created to sell toys? Duke did not exist in the comics originally. He was created by the Sunbow cartoon due to Hasbro's issues with Hawk's codename being "too political." The cartoon paired Scarlett with Duke due to perceived "difficulties" regarding Snake Eyes' muteness in a cartoon relationship, which is a total cop-out.
Laziest plot resolution I've ever seen. Scarlett says all of one sentence to Snake Eyes in the entire miniseries and them pledges to stay with Duke to the end? WRONG! Ellis just wanted to get the whole Snake Eyes/Scarlett romance from the comics out of the way so he could tell the story HE wanted to tell and cater to that damn Sunbow cartoon, which was nothing more than a 30 minute weekly toy commercial. Hasbro should remember where the story comes from and who their most popular couple is.
Scarlett and Duke have nothing in common. Duke is disrespectful, doesn't care for her and is rude to Scarlett. Snake Eyes is kind, sweet and cares for Scarlett. Snake Eyes and Scarlett deserve to be together. I hate that the shows and movie didn't put them as a couple. In G.I. Joe The Rise Of Cobra, Scarlett and Ripcord!? G.I. Joe Renegades Season 1, Scarlett hugs Duke instead of Snake Eyes. We need to go on strike Snake Eyes and Scarlett fans!!!
@FlyAwayTiki Hey, Renegades had a lot more tender Snake Eyes/Scarlett moments, like the scene where they talk about her father. And it did end with Snake Eyes and Scarlett fighting side-by-side and back-to-back against bio vipers. And then Scarlett chooses to give Mindbender the codes rather than let Snake Eyes be disintegrated in the MASS device. At least Renegades tried a lot harder than Warren "let's-throw-Snake Eyes-and-Scarlett-under-the-bus" Ellis did with Resolute.
@FlyAwayTiki At present time there are no plans for a second season of Renegades. The show is oficially "on hiatus" until the second movie comes out(without Scarlett, I might add.) The final episode of the season, episode 26, is the episode where Mindbender threatens to throw Snake Eyes in the still unstable MASS device and tells Scarlett that "her boyfriend" will get disintegrated unless she gives up the codes, which she agrees to.
@FlyAwayTiki I agree 100%, but how does SE show he's nice and sweet without even being able to speak, remaining totally expressionless, and not moving unless neccesary?
@anticswithmydogz You don't read the comics, do you? First of all, Snake Eyes is not a robot. He moves all the time and is not expressionless. Second, Scarlett fell in love with him before the accident where he saved her life and damaged his face and vocal chords. Third, Snake Eyes wore a flesh-toned laytex mask that matched his original features whenever he was out of costume. Fourth, Snake Eyes didn't have to speak; both he and Scarlett always seemed to know what the other was thinking.
@anticswithmydogz Here's an example of Snake Eyes being "nice and sweet." When he and Scarlett went to Europe so he could undergo dangerous reconstructive surgery on his face, Scarlett begged him to reconsider, saying that it was too risky and that she loved him just as he was. Snake Eyes then pointed to a couple on the street walking hand in hand; he pointed to the sun, touched his face, and then took Scarlett's hand. She knew then exactly what Snake Eyes was saying to her......(cont'd.)
@anticswithmydogz (cont'd.) .......Scarlett knew that Snake Eyes was saying that all he wanted was to be able to walk with her out in the open, feel the sun on his face, and hold her hand without anyone staring at his scars, and without having to wear that flesh-toned laytex mask. Don't use the cartoons or the movie as a reference. Only the comics get Snake Eyes and Scarlett right, which is sad, becuase it's been 30 years and they have yet to get their due on-screen.
@FlyAwayTiki Actually, "Renegades" was following the original Scarlett/Snake-Eyes love story. There was a scene where Snake see Scarlett hug Duke and he rides off in the sunset alone, but that constitute the she's in a relationship with him.
@FlyAwayTiki Hey, whoa whoa, Renegade went out of it's way to show Snake Eyes and Scarlet have a history! And they've hugged, or at least done something similar to it at times. Relax.
@FlyAwayTiki Umm, I think you meant to say that Snake Eyes and Scarlett WERE meant to be together! LOL And I agree, I don't understand why Snake Eyes and Scarlett are constantly disrespected by every media format outside of the comics. Snake Eyes got his face blasted off for Scarlett; Scarlett took a bullet in the head for Snake Eyes. Duke fits nowhere in this equation becasue he was a composite character created by Hasbro solely for the 80's cartoon, and that cartoon should be ignored.
I bet Snake Eyes is pretty broken up about losing Scarlet to Duke, given the neck-snaps, throat stabs, nuclear grenade booby traps, and giving the last peon false hope. That, or he's really just that brutal all the time.
@1337ijs Don't worry, this is just one animated series vs. 30 years of comics history. The comics always win out in the end. Scarlett would never choose anyone over Snake Eyes. The woman took a bullet in the head for him!
@DarthMater Let's see......30 years of comics history with Snake Eyes and Scarlett together as a couple, vs. one animated webisode series from a British writer where Scarlett chooses to be with Duke for no discernable reason whatsoever other than to accomodate the animators not having to think too much. Anvil, meet feather.
@SHAdaKID No, in the comics they don't print Snake Eyes' thoughts at all, actually, and his relationship with Scarlett is still going strong after nearly 30 years. No captions, no thought bubbles, nothing. That's why the excuse that Snake Eyes and Scarlett wouldn't work on-screen is invalid and a cop out. It's just an excuse for laziness. If Larry Hama could make it work in the comics, AND make them the two most popular characters, there's no reason someone can't do it on-screen.
duke could have been a bit more tactful in giving scarlet that ultimatum, you know like at least waiting until snake eyes was out of the room. yeah he's a ninja and probably going to hear it anyway, but he's your friend duke, don't just do that to the guy
Snakes Eyes and Scarlet cant work on screen because he doesnt talk. Their interaction would be boring to watch. Duke would have been better with Lady Jaye. Where was Lady Jaye ?
@SHAdaKID How can you make such an assessment if no one has ever tried it? Renegades is doing a pretty good job with Snake Eyes & Scarlett. If Larry Hama could do their relationship on 2 dimensional pieces of paper for a decade, then animators and filmakers can certainly do it on screen. Any statement that says otherwise is a cop out. Sunbow didn't do Snake Eyes and Scarlett's romance because it was a dumb 80's cartoon, and 80' cartoons never did things right, unless they were from Japan.
@Eganthevile1 Snake Eyes never lost the girl. He and Scarlett have been together for 30 years in the comics, and she enjoys his tongue and every other part of him. He's mute because the nerve endings in his vocal chords are damaged, not his tongue! The only reason that Snake Eyes loses the girl in 'Resolute' is due to the meddling of a British comic book writer named Warren Ellis who was kissing Sunbow animation's ass rather than adhering to Marvel comics and Larry Hama's original canon.
@nhaberbrook Dude, after 30 years of having to put up with the damage Sunbow did to GI JOE, and the limited vision of lazy animators who constantly use Snake Eyes' muteness as an excuse for not pursuing his relationship with Scarlett in the cartoons, me and every other comic book fan passed being sick and tired of it a long time ago. It's like the Red Sox and the Cubs waiting nearly a century for a championship. Enough already! Scarlett is with Snake Eyes no matter what the damn cartoonists do.
@B3STFRI3NDZZ That's because Snake Eyes was thinking, "Wait a minute! That's not how Larry Hama wrote me and Scarlett in the comics! Larry would never have her pick that goober over me!" LOL
0:19 Doc? He got killed in Trucial Abysmia. I know the bruvvers is de fist ones de die but lawdy how'd da doc come back ta life? nigga be doin some voodoo shit yall hey you gotta dolla?
@silasgreen123 In the 80's cartoon... yes, but the source material is just the toyline. And Marvel (comic) and Sunbow (cartoon) did similar yet different things originating from the toy "stats". The 80's cartoon didn't have a SnakeEyes/StormShadow angle (true) but the Marvel comic did and every adaptation since has followed the comic on it. As far as reviews (comic vs cartoon) in terms of quality... its not even close. Rivalry w/ history usually works better, but true, initially SE was spec ops
@thejokersonyou Actually, that's incorrect. The Marvel comic by Larry Hama came out first and has always been the source material. The toyline had stats, but were just toys with no story. The actual source of the GI JOE storyline was an unpublished SHIELD vs. HYDRA comic book called "Fury Force" that Larry Hama developed as a spin-off of the "Nick Fury: Agent Of SHIELD" series. Hawk is actually inspired by Nick Fury, and Scarlett and Snake Eyes' names were originally "Spook" and "Shadow."
@silasgreen123 No, the cartoons came out a year after the Marvel comic book series debuted in 1982, and Snake Eyes was shown as an Army Ranger who had traveled to Japan and trained as a ninja. Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes were friends at first, but later became adversaries. The Spirit vs. Storm Shadow thing was just another example of the cartoon ignoring Snake Eyes' storyline so they woudln't have to deal with his inability to speak, just as they ignored his romance with Scarlett.
No....She hasnt choosen Duke, just because of that.....She Knew Snake Eyes wouldnt let her go with him, due to the fact that it was Snake Eyes's own matter, his own Vendetta, if you wish. Now do You see why she hasnt choosen Snake Eyes?.
@hotrobert1981 Dude, Scarlett chose Snake Eyes back in the original Marvel comics series, and she's been with Snake Eyes ever since, even becomeing engaged to marrry him. Scarlett has never been with Duke at all in the comics, and her being with Duke in the 80's Sunbow cartoon was only implied, never confirmed. This version by Warren Ellis is a complete suck-up to Sunbow and shows a total lack of understanding of the depth of Snake Eyes and Scarlett's relationship created by Larry Hama.
@44excalibur I think it's worth noting that Warren Ellis pretty much knew nothing about GI Joe, other than that it was the Action Force cartoons in the UK. I can't really fault Ellis for failing to observe the comics, because he was being asked to write a story he had no previous knowledge of. I guess you could say someone should've pointed out the comics too him, but it's not easy to write a romance about a mute. Resolute probably also had fans of Sunbow in mind, so it's not the worst thing.
@mrmacross I think you're right in that Warren Ellis admitted he knew nothing about the comics and he intended to do nothing more than continue the Sunbow continuity. I disagree, however, that it's so difficult to write a romance about a mute, since Larry Hama did it for over a decade in Marvel comics and has now continued that storyline in the new IDW title. I doubt he's the only human capable of such writing. 'G.I. Joe Renegades' seems to be going in the direction of Snake Eyes/Scarlett.
@44excalibur But writing for comic is not the same as writing for a cartoon, especially a kid's cartoon (Sunbow). The cartoon would've had canned dialogue like Lassie, e.g. "What is it girl? Ruff! Where's Timmy? Ruff! Follow you? Ruff! Okay!" You also can't do internal monologue in cartoons, and generally don't narrate in them, either.
@mrmacross Ok, I take issue with that. First, Resolute is not a kid's cartoon. Second, if you read Larry Hama's comic book series you'd know the depth and emotion he poured into the Snake Eyes/Scarlett romance was a far cry from "Lassie, where's Timmy?" And the excuse that comics can't be translated to cartoons or film is just that, an excuse. Sin City, 300, and The Dark Knight did it just fine. And Children Of A Lesser God told a pretty decent love story without Marlee Matlin saying a word.
@44excalibur The "kid's cartoon" was regarding Sunbow. Resolute is obviously for older audiences.
Comics you can set up emotion with a mute. A well thought out movie can do the same, too. But a kid's cartoon misses the point, you have to focus on the action because your audience has low attention span and you want to sell toys. Resolute was a bunch of short episodes, so you can't set stuff up as easily with the strict time constraints. Plus, following Sunbow's story isn't the worst thing to do.
@mrmacross Ahh, but my point is that in the future, 'Resolute'-style adaptations would do well to follow the comic book storyline and not Sunbow. And one should never underestimate the attention span of the audience if we want more smart action thrillers like 'Inception.' The Sunbow GI Joe cartoon is essentially the same as the Adam West Batman TV series from the 60's. It was cute for its time, but it should not be repeated today.
The thing that amazes me about this series is how they pack so much story into such a small time frame. We cut to the heart of this love triangle in all of 5 seconds. Some series that hundreds of episodes. The 80's series danced about this for 4 seasons. Not here. It's make a choice and lets kill Cobra. Fantastic.
@LoremasterTeague There was never any love triangle. Scarlett is only with Snake Eyes in the comics to this day; in the 80's cartoon she was with Duke only for the convenience of the animators who didn't want to deal with Snake Eyes' muteness; they exist in two seperate universes. Second, Resolute didn't cut to the heart of anything. No reason is given for Scarlett choosing Duke other than "Warren Ellis says so." She shows no emotion towards Snake Eyes at all, and everything seems forced.
Quickest autopsy I ever heard of. Sucks to be them if Storm Shadow had thought to hide anthrax or something in the body. Boy would they have been screwed.
To all these nimrods spouting this "revisionist" bullcrap about Snake Eyes being a "lone wolf" and not needing Scarlett, may I remind you that Snake Eyes and Scarlett ended up engaged in the comic book continuity by Larra Hama, who is the creator of GI JOE. Without the comics there would be no cartoon, no movie, no nothing. And there never was a relationship with Duke at all in the comics. Hama himself oficiallly stated that "Scarlett's heart belongs to Snake Eyes." The creator has spoken!
"storm shadow killed bazooka, sabotaged the armory, and now he's calling you out" I bet Snakes eyes initial though to that comment from duke was "your jumping to conclusions."
An awful lot of people are a bit too upset at the whole Scarlet Snake Eyes/Duke thing. It's just a cartoon, and the whole love thing was one of the more contrived aspects of the comic series anyway.
Besides, why be angry at the trivial details of a cartoon that captures the spirit of the original GI Joe, when you can be angry at that horrible movie that had a Wayans Brother in it.
@jtar7242 Uhh, you obviously have never read the comic book series by Larry Hama, because there IS no Scarlett/Snake Eyes/Duke thing in the comics, she's only been with Snake Eyes in the comics for 30 years. The whole "contrived love thing" between Snake Eyes and Scarlett you speak of was hardly contrived, and it gave the series its emotional depth and power; it's not a trivial detail. And Larry Hama is the true spirit of GI JOE since he created it, so how can you say "Resolute" captures it?
I myself like it that way. Snake does what he does best flying solo, he doesn't need some awkward love triangle mingling in his head while he's in the field.
Just like Timber, he is the lone wolf. Survival and the fight are what's important to him.
@BlazingSpeed No,actually I said it best concerning Snake Eyes because I read all the comics. Click my username and you'll see. Snake Eyes and Scarlett FTW!
@RushInNinja Sorry, but you're dead wrong. Snake Eyes and Scarlett are Larry Hama's power couple, and they are incomplete without each other. Only someone who's never read the comics would say what you said. When Snake Eyes was at Scarlett's bedside after she had been shot by the Baroness, he actually spoke her name as they pulled the plug, and he was so devstated when he thought she was dead that he accepted a suicide mission becasue he couldn't live without her. Ignore the cartoons.
Ok, obviously we've hit a little snag here. That comment that your taking so seriously was an opinion my friend. I happen to think Snake is better off without her. And yeah I read plenty of Mr. Hama's books, possibly before you were even born.
Just take it easy. Like you said, "you said it best concerning "Eyes". You win, jus' don't hurt me. : )
@RushInNinja LOL Okay, opinion noted, although I've been reading the comics much longer than you think. I believe Hama's pairing of Snake Eyes and Scarlett works because the two complement and define each other. Without her, Snake Eyes is a one-dimensional killing machine with nothing to humanize him. Without him, Scarlett is just a piece of eye-candy. One need look no further than the cartoons to see this happen. There's a reason they have become one of the most popular couples in comics.
@RushInNinja True I was just like many others objecting to some people (who make the cartoons) why they have to disregard the real storyline in such drastic meassures!
I mean their making Scarlett(or all the characters) in the franchise look like little more than "locked and loaded jarheads"!
@TheShadowwolf88 Hey, Scarlett knows Snake Eyes can take care of himself. He's faced down Storm Shadow 100 times before, and he always comes back. Duke and the others need her help more than Snake does.
@Gunganfan I think that what annoys comic fans about 'Resolute' is not that Scarlett lets Snake Eyes go off on his own. It's that she chooses to be with Duke and even professes to love him rather than wait for Snake Eyes to return, which is not consistent with her character as established in the comics. 'Resolute' was written for fans of the 80's cartoon, not for comic book fans, which is like making a Batman movie for fans of the 60's TV show instead of the comics.
@TheShadowwolf88 Duke and Snake Eyes are apples and oranges, Duke's a leader, Snake Eyes an assassin, Snake Eyes works better alone anyways, while Duke needs people to rally around him. besides wasn't Scarlet always his bitch anyways, kind of like Flint and Lady Jaye
@TheShadowwolf88 yeah I know the :all american" type, it's called the winners. Japan tried that samurai shit in WWII against the American cowboy and guess who won? In all honesty I don't think one is better than the other, Duke gets shit done and Snake Eyes is a badass. when I watched those silly cartoon in the 80's when I was a kid Quick Kick and Snake Eyes were my two favs. Then Duke and for some reason I really liked Ship Wreck, guess kids like big ships and he was a sailor idk.
@TonyDucats Sorry, but Snake Eyes & Scarlett are canon and Duke is not. Snake Eyes and Scarlett have always been the main couple in the original comic books created by Larry Hama for 30 years now, and she was never paired with Duke at all. The Sunbow cartoon which ran in the 80's for 2 seasons before getting cancelled implied she was with Duke only because they didn't think they could work around Snake Eyes' muteness in a TV show aimed at kids. 80's cartoons always got comic storylines wrong.
@44excalibur oh well in this cartoon she seemed to of rolled with Duke, Snake Eyes is the coolest Joe so he should be the one getting the hot red head. Duke seems like he would be happier cleaning his gun than chilling with a woman
Hella yea, i used to play g i joe and i still have my scarlett and snake eyes action figure from the 80's. Gods, I loved it in the comics that they are together. I rooted for it, weird huh?
Yes, Snake Eyes and Scarlett have a long romantic involvement in the comic books that eventually led to them getting engaged. The 80's cartoon messed up the continuity by putting Scarlett in a simplistic, cartoon-style pairing with Duke because they thought her romance with Snake Eyes was too complicated for a half-hour children's cartoon, which was total crap! Typical 80's thinking. Warren Ellis had a chance to set things right with Resolute, but he sold out to the 80's cartoon. Moron!
Scarlett's first assignment on the G.I. Joe team was to train the new team in hand-to-hand combat. During the exercises, she met Snake-Eyes for the first time. While she bested most of the team's members, she recognized that Snake-Eyes was a superior fighter despite the fact that he had allowed her to beat him, allowing her to keep her dignity and respect with the other Joes. Scarlett was intrigued by his actions, and as a result, they became very close.
On a mission in the Middle East, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Rock 'n Roll, and Grunt were sent to save George Strawhacker from Cobra. On the way, the helicopter in which they were traveling began to malfunction, forcing Rock 'n' Roll and Grunt to bail out before it crashed. Scarlett remained stuck in the burning helicopter, however, and Snake-Eyes stayed behind to save his lover. He rescued her, but a window exploded right in his face, scarring him and damaging his vocal cords.
Despite his injuries, Snake-Eyes convinced Hawk to let him continue with the mission. Scarlett recovered from her injuries but Snake-Eyes harbored no ill will and the two became even closer. She almost died saving his life from a vengeful Baroness who thought Snake-Eyes killed her brother. Snake-Eyes had undergone corrective surgery in Europe to repair his face when the Baroness' agents attacked. Scarlett took a bullet in the head from the Baroness who kidnapped the unconcious Snake-Eyes.
Scarlett eventually recovered from her coma and was reunited with Snake-Eyes. Much later Scarlett was given the mission of feigning defection to Cobra. She was deeply disturbed when she thought she had caused the deaths of Hawk and Stalker to maintain her cover. She was still not trusted by Zarana so sought to prove herself by pursuing the fleeing Destro and Baroness. When confronted by Snake-Eyes, he was forced to drive his sword through Scarlett, knowing that she was working undercover.
Snake-Eyes made sure the wound missed her vital organs, and she received medical treatment. Scarlett subsequently escaped from Cobra with the aid of Snake-Eyes. The two would continue to serve G.I. Joe, even becoming members of the Ninja Force special team, until the Joe Team disbanded. They were slated to be married until circumstances forced Snake-Eyes to leave her. His apprentice Ophelia had been killed, and for Snake-Eyes it was like experiencing the death of his twin sister all over again.
Ophelia's death made Snake-Eyes feel that he would only bring danger to Scarlett's life, and he broke off their engagement. When the team reformed, the two were forced to work together. Scarlett was initially angry at Snake-Eyes but came to forgive him in the end. In 2002, Snake-Eyes proposed to Scarlett a second time and they are again engaged to be married. They continued to serve on the team together through the final wake of the Red Shadows, and the eventual second disbandment of the team.
Scarlett was so cold in this scene. They don't even give any background as to why she'd pick Duke. WTH! And yet they still take the time to show that poor ol' Snakes is hurt by it. *sigh*
Wow, the guy doing the voice acting for Duke is as bad an actor as Channing Tatum. I always liked Flint more. He had a sense of humor and treated Lady Jaye with respect.

I bet Snake Eyes is pretty broken up about losing Scarlet to Duke, given the neck-snaps, throat stabs, nuclear grenade booby traps, and giving the last peon false hope. That, or he's really just that brutal all the time.
1337ijs 6 months ago
@1337ijs Don't worry, this is just one animated series vs. 30 years of comics history. The comics always win out in the end. Scarlett would never choose anyone over Snake Eyes. The woman took a bullet in the head for him!

DarthMater 6 months ago
@DarthMater Let's see......30 years of comics history with Snake Eyes and Scarlett together as a couple, vs. one animated webisode series from a British writer where Scarlett chooses to be with Duke for no discernable reason whatsoever other than to accomodate the animators not having to think too much. Anvil, meet feather.
44excalibur 6 months ago 3
Point taken. I liked both characters so truthfully I dont care who scarlett is with.
SHAdaKID 6 months ago
By the way, did I mention I hate Duke? :P
44excalibur 6 months ago
Yeah in the comic they can print his thoughts. But on screen she would be doing all the talking.
SHAdaKID 6 months ago
@SHAdaKID No, in the comics they don't print Snake Eyes' thoughts at all, actually, and his relationship with Scarlett is still going strong after nearly 30 years. No captions, no thought bubbles, nothing. That's why the excuse that Snake Eyes and Scarlett wouldn't work on-screen is invalid and a cop out. It's just an excuse for laziness. If Larry Hama could make it work in the comics, AND make them the two most popular characters, there's no reason someone can't do it on-screen.
44excalibur 6 months ago 3
duke could have been a bit more tactful in giving scarlet that ultimatum, you know like at least waiting until snake eyes was out of the room. yeah he's a ninja and probably going to hear it anyway, but he's your friend duke, don't just do that to the guy

Dragonrider1227 7 months ago
@SHAdaKID How can you make such an assessment if no one has ever tried it? Renegades is doing a pretty good job with Snake Eyes & Scarlett. If Larry Hama could do their relationship on 2 dimensional pieces of paper for a decade, then animators and filmakers can certainly do it on screen. Any statement that says otherwise is a cop out. Sunbow didn't do Snake Eyes and Scarlett's romance because it was a dumb 80's cartoon, and 80' cartoons never did things right, unless they were from Japan.

Reason Snake Eyes loses the girl=No tongue
Eganthevile1 9 months ago
@Eganthevile1 Snake Eyes never lost the girl. He and Scarlett have been together for 30 years in the comics, and she enjoys his tongue and every other part of him. He's mute because the nerve endings in his vocal chords are damaged, not his tongue! The only reason that Snake Eyes loses the girl in 'Resolute' is due to the meddling of a British comic book writer named Warren Ellis who was kissing Sunbow animation's ass rather than adhering to Marvel comics and Larry Hama's original canon.

It's like the Red Sox and the Cubs waiting nearly a century for a championship. Enough already! Scarlett is with Snake Eyes no matter what the damn cartoonists do.

silasgreen123 1 year ago
@silasgreen123 In the 80's cartoon... yes, but the source material is just the toyline. And Marvel (comic) and Sunbow (cartoon) did similar yet different things originating from the toy "stats". The 80's cartoon didn't have a SnakeEyes/StormShadow angle (true) but the Marvel comic did and every adaptation since has followed the comic on it. As far as reviews (comic vs cartoon) in terms of quality... its not even close. Rivalry w/ history usually works better, but true, initially SE was spec ops
thejokersonyou 1 year ago
@thejokersonyou Actually, that's incorrect. The Marvel comic by Larry Hama came out first and has always been the source material. The toyline had stats, but were just toys with no story. The actual source of the GI JOE storyline was an unpublished SHIELD vs. HYDRA comic book called "Fury Force" that Larry Hama developed as a spin-off of the "Nick Fury: Agent Of SHIELD" series. Hawk is actually inspired by Nick Fury, and Scarlett and Snake Eyes' names were originally "Spook" and "Shadow."
44excalibur 1 year ago
@silasgreen123 No, the cartoons came out a year after the Marvel comic book series debuted in 1982, and Snake Eyes was shown as an Army Ranger who had traveled to Japan and trained as a ninja. Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes were friends at first, but later became adversaries. The Spirit vs. Storm Shadow thing was just another example of the cartoon ignoring Snake Eyes' storyline so they woudln't have to deal with his inability to speak, just as they ignored his romance with Scarlett.

hotrobert1981 1 year ago 2
@hotrobert1981 Dude, Scarlett chose Snake Eyes back in the original Marvel comics series, and she's been with Snake Eyes ever since, even becomeing engaged to marrry him. Scarlett has never been with Duke at all in the comics, and her being with Duke in the 80's Sunbow cartoon was only implied, never confirmed. This version by Warren Ellis is a complete suck-up to Sunbow and shows a total lack of understanding of the depth of Snake Eyes and Scarlett's relationship created by Larry Hama.
44excalibur 1 year ago
@44excalibur I think it's worth noting that Warren Ellis pretty much knew nothing about GI Joe, other than that it was the Action Force cartoons in the UK. I can't really fault Ellis for failing to observe the comics, because he was being asked to write a story he had no previous knowledge of. I guess you could say someone should've pointed out the comics too him, but it's not easy to write a romance about a mute. Resolute probably also had fans of Sunbow in mind, so it's not the worst thing.
mrmacross 1 year ago
@mrmacross I think you're right in that Warren Ellis admitted he knew nothing about the comics and he intended to do nothing more than continue the Sunbow continuity. I disagree, however, that it's so difficult to write a romance about a mute, since Larry Hama did it for over a decade in Marvel comics and has now continued that storyline in the new IDW title. I doubt he's the only human capable of such writing. 'G.I. Joe Renegades' seems to be going in the direction of Snake Eyes/Scarlett.
44excalibur 1 year ago
@44excalibur But writing for comic is not the same as writing for a cartoon, especially a kid's cartoon (Sunbow). The cartoon would've had canned dialogue like Lassie, e.g. "What is it girl? Ruff! Where's Timmy? Ruff! Follow you? Ruff! Okay!" You also can't do internal monologue in cartoons, and generally don't narrate in them, either.
mrmacross 1 year ago
@mrmacross Ok, I take issue with that. First, Resolute is not a kid's cartoon. Second, if you read Larry Hama's comic book series you'd know the depth and emotion he poured into the Snake Eyes/Scarlett romance was a far cry from "Lassie, where's Timmy?" And the excuse that comics can't be translated to cartoons or film is just that, an excuse. Sin City, 300, and The Dark Knight did it just fine. And Children Of A Lesser God told a pretty decent love story without Marlee Matlin saying a word.
44excalibur 1 year ago
@44excalibur The "kid's cartoon" was regarding Sunbow. Resolute is obviously for older audiences.
Comics you can set up emotion with a mute. A well thought out movie can do the same, too. But a kid's cartoon misses the point, you have to focus on the action because your audience has low attention span and you want to sell toys. Resolute was a bunch of short episodes, so you can't set stuff up as easily with the strict time constraints. Plus, following Sunbow's story isn't the worst thing to do.
mrmacross 1 year ago
@mrmacross Ahh, but my point is that in the future, 'Resolute'-style adaptations would do well to follow the comic book storyline and not Sunbow. And one should never underestimate the attention span of the audience if we want more smart action thrillers like 'Inception.' The Sunbow GI Joe cartoon is essentially the same as the Adam West Batman TV series from the 60's. It was cute for its time, but it should not be repeated today.
44excalibur 1 year ago
@mrmacross And as i stated, The HUB's GI Joe Renegades appears to be following the Snake Eyes/Scarlett storyline from the comics.

Fantastic.
LoremasterTeague 1 year ago 4
@LoremasterTeague There was never any love triangle. Scarlett is only with Snake Eyes in the comics to this day; in the 80's cartoon she was with Duke only for the convenience of the animators who didn't want to deal with Snake Eyes' muteness; they exist in two seperate universes. Second, Resolute didn't cut to the heart of anything. No reason is given for Scarlett choosing Duke other than "Warren Ellis says so." She shows no emotion towards Snake Eyes at all, and everything seems forced.

An awful lot of people are a bit too upset at the whole Scarlet Snake Eyes/Duke thing. It's just a cartoon, and the whole love thing was one of the more contrived aspects of the comic series anyway.
Besides, why be angry at the trivial details of a cartoon that captures the spirit of the original GI Joe, when you can be angry at that horrible movie that had a Wayans Brother in it.
jtar7242 1 year ago
@jtar7242 Uhh, you obviously have never read the comic book series by Larry Hama, because there IS no Scarlett/Snake Eyes/Duke thing in the comics, she's only been with Snake Eyes in the comics for 30 years. The whole "contrived love thing" between Snake Eyes and Scarlett you speak of was hardly contrived, and it gave the series its emotional depth and power; it's not a trivial detail. And Larry Hama is the true spirit of GI JOE since he created it, so how can you say "Resolute" captures it?

44excalibur 1 year ago
@RushInNinja Sorry, but you're dead wrong. Snake Eyes and Scarlett are Larry Hama's power couple, and they are incomplete without each other. Only someone who's never read the comics would say what you said. When Snake Eyes was at Scarlett's bedside after she had been shot by the Baroness, he actually spoke her name as they pulled the plug, and he was so devstated when he thought she was dead that he accepted a suicide mission becasue he couldn't live without her. Ignore the cartoons.
44excalibur 1 year ago
Ok, obviously we've hit a little snag here. That comment that your taking so seriously was an opinion my friend. I happen to think Snake is better off without her. And yeah I read plenty of Mr. Hama's books, possibly before you were even born.
Just take it easy. Like you said, "you said it best concerning "Eyes". You win, jus' don't hurt me. : )
RushInNinja 1 year ago
@RushInNinja LOL Okay, opinion noted, although I've been reading the comics much longer than you think. I believe Hama's pairing of Snake Eyes and Scarlett works because the two complement and define each other. Without her, Snake Eyes is a one-dimensional killing machine with nothing to humanize him. Without him, Scarlett is just a piece of eye-candy. One need look no further than the cartoons to see this happen. There's a reason they have become one of the most popular couples in comics.

@Gunganfan
true!
TheShadowwolf88 1 year ago
@Gunganfan I think that what annoys comic fans about 'Resolute' is not that Scarlett lets Snake Eyes go off on his own. It's that she chooses to be with Duke and even professes to love him rather than wait for Snake Eyes to return, which is not consistent with her character as established in the comics. 'Resolute' was written for fans of the 80's cartoon, not for comic book fans, which is like making a Batman movie for fans of the 60's TV show instead of the comics.

TheShadowwolf88 11 months ago
@TonyDucats Sorry, but Snake Eyes & Scarlett are canon and Duke is not. Snake Eyes and Scarlett have always been the main couple in the original comic books created by Larry Hama for 30 years now, and she was never paired with Duke at all. The Sunbow cartoon which ran in the 80's for 2 seasons before getting cancelled implied she was with Duke only because they didn't think they could work around Snake Eyes' muteness in a TV show aimed at kids. 80's cartoons always got comic storylines wrong.

Didnt Scarlett and Snake Eyes have a romantic envolvement?
Ben1977820 2 years ago 3
Yes, Snake Eyes and Scarlett have a long romantic involvement in the comic books that eventually led to them getting engaged. The 80's cartoon messed up the continuity by putting Scarlett in a simplistic, cartoon-style pairing with Duke because they thought her romance with Snake Eyes was too complicated for a half-hour children's cartoon, which was total crap! Typical 80's thinking. Warren Ellis had a chance to set things right with Resolute, but he sold out to the 80's cartoon. Moron!
44excalibur 2 years ago
really, tell me more.
SweetLolita8 2 years ago
You want the whole story? Ok!
44excalibur 2 years ago
On a mission in the Middle East, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Rock 'n Roll, and Grunt were sent to save George Strawhacker from Cobra. On the way, the helicopter in which they were traveling began to malfunction, forcing Rock 'n' Roll and Grunt to bail out before it crashed. Scarlett remained stuck in the burning helicopter, however, and Snake-Eyes stayed behind to save his lover. He rescued her, but a window exploded right in his face, scarring him and damaging his vocal cords.
44excalibur 2 years ago 2
Despite his injuries, Snake-Eyes convinced Hawk to let him continue with the mission. Scarlett recovered from her injuries but Snake-Eyes harbored no ill will and the two became even closer. She almost died saving his life from a vengeful Baroness who thought Snake-Eyes killed her brother. Snake-Eyes had undergone corrective surgery in Europe to repair his face when the Baroness' agents attacked. Scarlett took a bullet in the head from the Baroness who kidnapped the unconcious Snake-Eyes.
44excalibur 2 years ago 2
Scarlett eventually recovered from her coma and was reunited with Snake-Eyes. Much later Scarlett was given the mission of feigning defection to Cobra. She was deeply disturbed when she thought she had caused the deaths of Hawk and Stalker to maintain her cover. She was still not trusted by Zarana so sought to prove herself by pursuing the fleeing Destro and Baroness. When confronted by Snake-Eyes, he was forced to drive his sword through Scarlett, knowing that she was working undercover.
44excalibur 2 years ago 2
Snake-Eyes made sure the wound missed her vital organs, and she received medical treatment. Scarlett subsequently escaped from Cobra with the aid of Snake-Eyes. The two would continue to serve G.I. Joe, even becoming members of the Ninja Force special team, until the Joe Team disbanded. They were slated to be married until circumstances forced Snake-Eyes to leave her. His apprentice Ophelia had been killed, and for Snake-Eyes it was like experiencing the death of his twin sister all over again.
44excalibur 2 years ago 2
Ophelia's death made Snake-Eyes feel that he would only bring danger to Scarlett's life, and he broke off their engagement. When the team reformed, the two were forced to work together. Scarlett was initially angry at Snake-Eyes but came to forgive him in the end. In 2002, Snake-Eyes proposed to Scarlett a second time and they are again engaged to be married. They continued to serve on the team together through the final wake of the Red Shadows, and the eventual second disbandment of the team.
