is the audience illiterate? there is a screen posting every single word....if there was no screen, i would understand having the dialogue in english. but they have the words right in front of their faces...
I don't speak german, so I had to translate what you said...I think that operas should be performed in their original language though. So in this case, german would be preferred...besides, they had a translation slide show, so there's no need for the english dialogue...
yes, that´s exactly what i mean. well eventhough we should learn other language.. like when the queen get really angry to pamina..auf deutsch that will be more showed up..haha.. not just "SILENCE!" but the classic "Kein Wort".. haha.. i love that..
it is done that way to keep the music the same way it was when it was written. The music can sound different when translated, but there's no need to have the dialogue in German so you might as well make it easier for the audience to understand.
This Tamino is a good singer? Are you kidding me? So many high note he gives so much tension and pushes a lot... Some high notes are not pure and clear., shake like a hell.... very disappointed...
I believe it is a nice performance though I totally disagree with the use of English spoken texts. The tenor lacks some acting when interpreting Tamino and the ladies with german accent are too sexy.
Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria then later moved to Vienna, Austria's capital. So he was Austrian not German. I'm from Vienna... and that's why one of our main chocolate delicacies are called 'Mozartkugel' ;).
oh my god, those chocolates are absolutely the best!!!! i've been to salzburg a couple of times. i want to go back and have some more chocolate!!!! x3

I think that in all it was a nice production but.... I think the conducter rushing through some part in the pieces. And allthou Tamino has a lovely voice he sounds more like a baritone than a tenor.
I'm also playing The Magic Flute this year thats why I'm listening, so I can her it by people who can play this is really good. Im playing it on flute btw.
i don't think u can even find one in english cuz its mostly made in german. but in the libretto, u can find the 2 languages, one in german, and one in english but they don't sing it in english. it's jsut translation in the libretto.
thanks for the reply, i know it's sung in english as well as many other languages on stage performances, i also have a libretto which is German/English i just thought that as there is in the theatre, there would be an english equivalent on video/dvd.
ahhhhhh!! i love northwestern!!!! if i could go there and play soccer for their women's team i totally would! but i an not quite good enough =(. go northwestern!!!!
How can any one not love Mozart? The score to this piece is so well written! He was an 18´th century producer that was good enough to make hes music carry on through the ages!!! Herr Mozart! Sie war, unt bist, eine meister des musik!!! Danke schön fûr 200 jahren schöngeschäft!!
Oh! Poor Tamino! I'll admit, I laughed when he cracked. But, I've been through the same thing. He dealt with it nobly. Overall, this is a very good production!
Wow.. I've never heard that little bit by the Three Ladies before the end live before. Apparantly it was something Mozart cut out. Btw I love the costumes and scenery! :)
sie ist doch zu schnell, ich stimme zu. Seltsam, die Woerte auf Englisch zu hoeren. Gut aber. Sagt die Koenigin hier "du wirdst der TocherrAtter sein?" klingt als ob
It's much easier to translate spoken dialogue from German into English because you can capture the meaning without having to retain the original meter (that is to say the number of syllables in a line). With the arias, However, any translation will need to retain the original meter for it to match the music...which takes alot more skill and often results in a reinterpretation of the libretto. Compare The Threepenny Opera.
What strikes me the most is that they sing in German and they really do quite a good job. (I'm from Germany) Actually i'm not sure whether there is an englisch libretto for Die Zauberflöte.
@p0t80: the three are attracted by Pamino (the orange guy) and argue who will stay to protect him, but they declare it to be not the right thing to do and at 13:20 they sing "Lebewohl" (Good-bye)
The guy in orange in the beginning 0.07.22 sings something like this : Help Me, Help Me, Help Me, The clever snake who hunts me, Merciful Gods its getting close!
There are moments in this production of The Magic Flute that we found unquestionably superb. We think some of the 'magic' in this rendition lies more in the captivating stage presence of the performers than in the implied powers of Tamino's flute or Papageno's glockenspiel! One thing we are certain about: this production conveyed the Magic Flute in the spirit of light and love that so characterizes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
This is only the first act. Act two is an additional hour and fifteen minutes. If you read the info box, you'd see that this production is 2 hrs 15 mins long.

Let's keep on writing about the piece.
Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria in 1756.
