Such a beautiful kata... I don't really like this version that much to be honest but I love the history of the kata and how all karate can pretty much be traced back to it
Osu, This is my next kata to learn... i originally started with Seido and now in our own style which has its history in seido and Kyokushinkai. I love the big strong stances and techniques.
We miss Sosai. Other than his incredible presence, we still need him for little things. Katas tend to "adjust" over time. One reason I wish he was still with us would be to have all Kyokushin' kata be the same. There are a few differences from the version that I was taught, but if it's practical, what's it matter. That's what I love about Kyokushin, as long as it works in a fight, we'll use it.
Looking at this style kata, kumite and kihon - I would have to say that that this is more powerful. Its generally full contact in its kumite so the kata and kihon reflect this.
I would say shotokan is slightly more dynamic in its movement. If I wanted to build up some power then this version of kanku may help, whereas the other versions offer something else.
I dont believe that either is 'better' than the other - just different
This kata is more technical than the shotokan version. There's something like 40 to 50 more moves. When done full speed and correctly there is no kata to compare. I was lucky to be with an instructor who was 5th dan under Mas Oyama and 7th dan in Seibukan shotokan so I learn both.
Anyone knows the application for the move (it's referred to as the no 44 move in Shotokan) where the karateka suddenly crouches to a low position? Some said that it's an evasive move; while others said it's actually a grappling / locking maneuver.
There are so many version of Kushanku/Kanku kata. There are all amazing. I train in Goju-ryu, I think it is too bad that Kushanku kata is not in that style.
Shotokan, Shito Ryu and Shorin Ryu versions of this kata are rooted closer to the original form as it was taught in Okinawa. Mas Oyama modified most of his kata and many do not resemble any he learned from Funakoshi or Yamaguchi. You can see the Korean influence in his karate as well as the Kempo he learned. These kata are only practiced by followers of Oyama's karate for the most part.
the way of the ultimate truth.....fight with love, justice and good spirit..i am 2nd dan kyokushin..34 years...anyone who cares to bikker and argue on this thread has to re evaluate ....please dont fall into the catergory of kungfu movie watchers..karate is a way of life..personal and life enhancing..bless you all..j
@xpatdrummer hi mate. Nice words! I also practice Kyokushinkai karate and, for myself, I think karate is one of the most powerful fighting arts of the world.
I also like some fighting movies (including kung fu), but we all reconize that in the movies we have coreography (sorry, I don't know how to write it) and not real situatuions.
AOMINET is crazy if he thinks that this kata isn't hard.I read that this kata is required for 3 dan....and if you think about the other 40 katas that you have to know in addition to this it makes it even more difficult...OSU!!
I don't think Mass Oyama ask for somebody's opinion when he was training alone ; do the same guys and be inventive let your mind be free of thoughts and practice , by practice you will discover your own vulnerabilites or qualities and than you can make your own stile of fight if you want ; take what is necesary for you in a particular moment and use it but more important is practice ; The Master become a master only with practice . OSU
I can't believe some of you are discussing which way it is done correctly. All the different styles of karate have different kata, all the different styles of kyokushin have slightly different kata, and even inside a specefic style (like IFK or IKO for instance) different dojos do katas with very slight differences. You can't really say what's the right way :|
omg this video needs sounds! idk where he is doing the Kiai! Does he do the kiai at the two morote-uchi??i really need to know that cuz im doing this kata in USWC and im getting nervous...
I study seido karate derived by kyokushin and therefore from the guju ryu. I made reference to the minute 1,13 when sensei do three morotes shuto and then a soete tsuki. I think that the shutos are two, as when Sensei comes toward the camera. However it is very beautiful to be able to see online these things and to comment these with other karateka. This can make only us grow and to improve. I thank thankful2one and dustandstone to have written me. Osu Arigatou Gozaimasu
I know that the derived styles from original kyokushin of Mas Oyama have the same kata but there are differences in it. These are the kata from IKO 1 with Shokei Kancho Matsui.
This kata looks really interesting... I know Wado Ryu's Kushanku and Shotokan's Kanku Dai and Kanku Sho and I have to say that this one is quite complex. I would love to see its bunkai.
This is a hardcore kata. I know some black belts (mostly lower dans) that can't do this. Only our sensi and one brown belt (altough she should be second dan by now) know it at our dojo. Well done
Aominet--what a remarkably dull statement. You've never done martial arts, but you dont see how it's challenging. Amazing. If you watch a master mechanic fix an engine, it's going to look easy, because he's skilled. There's more going on here than just a sequence of moves (stances, timing, execution, rhythm, direction of attack, direction of focus, breathing, kime, etc etc) than you can imagine. That's why those of us who know something know it's challenging.
Indeed, there are forms in Wu Shu that are difficult to perform. Anyhow, it shows a lack of maturity if you were to diss Wu Shu and BJJ merely because of what AOMINET wrote. All forms of martial arts have great benefits. Period.
oh the william oliver kanku is so strong in comparison

This comment has received too many negative votes show
not as good as either of the kanku katas practised in shotokan
jay12345678925476578 2 years ago
Would like to explain why or is that just a random comment?
WestBfella 2 years ago
lol because shotokan is generally a more powerful style. Shotokans kanku sho has techniques way more advanced that this version of the kata.

Why do you say its difficult?
I dont do Karate, but i respect it and also i would like to train it, especially Kyokushinkai or Shotokan. (I train Wu-Shu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu)
I dont see the Kata to be that diffcult.
Regards.
