At the end of the song, Mr. Nicholson tells Ms. Streep, "You were born to be a star." That is the truth. Ms. Streep, you are loved as much as anyone can love a movie star. Thank for this post.
It's amazing that she can make her voice sound bad and worn but still good at the same time, that is a very difficult thing to do.Meryl Streep is just...there are no words to describe her genius.
i choked up. i saw this movie when i was younger but i didn't remember this scene. it's so sad. Oh, Meryl, the humanity in you. Thank you for sharing it with us.
This scene might be the best the fighting spirit of the homeless has ever been portrayed on film. And maybe Meryl Streep's best 5 minutes in any movie.
Unforgettable, haunting, painfully sad. I've often wondered if Streep was responsible for the interpretation, or if she was directed. Probably some collaboration involved, but one suspects it is mostly Streep's flaming genius..
I think it's cool that Jack Nicholson says "By God, Helen, that's as good as it gets" in this scene, since he later costarred with Helen Hunt in the movie As Good as It Gets.
This song written between 1900 and 1910 was composed by my great-uncle, GUS EDWARDS, the man who also wrote School Days, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, In My Merry Oldsmobile and many others. Meryl did such a great version of this sentimental love song. If I ever met her, I would thank her for how she did it.
He's the best ever was and I loves him because.......................
Such a beautiful and forgotten movie, redolent with regret and tempered at the end with the softest and faintest of hopes. As weighted-down as the Depression itself and, INHO, better than the Kennedy novel it's based on. All should've received oscars! Certainly Nicholson's best, and one of Streeps too.
This is one of the saddest moments in any Meryl Streep movie, and Meryl excels at sad moments! That's why it's such a pleasure to see her get out there and have some great fun with Mamma Mia. When great acting is called for, you can always call Meryl, but now we know that she can dance and sing and have fun too.
This must be one of Meryl's saddest movies. Helen was so kind, and had such high expectations for her life with Francis, but nothing could work out for her. Meryl really delivers. But when doesn't she?
Does anyone have this song's lyrics?? Thx!!

Just saw Meryl receive her honors at The 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors Dec 27, 11
Anne Hathaway sang this song to her in big style on stage. How cool!
Great movie. I remember it well. Powerful. One bittersweet bite of life!

Meryl Streep has performed many amazing roles in her career. But in this movie her performance is beyond amazing. She is simply astonishing.

Meryl Streep has given many outstanding performances, but this role was completely "off the charts." She is simply astonishing!!!!!!!!!!

this scene should have clinched the oscar ahead of Cher that year. How the hell did Cher win over this or even Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction

I'm no big Cher fan, but she WAS great in Moonstruck. (So were the others you mention.....that's the breaks!)

I think my heart broke into a million pieces, when I realized that she was just imagining the enthusiasm of the audience.
And it's needless to talk about Meryl Streep's performance here, it's the way it ALWAYS is - Flawless

The warmth and the beauty of her fantasy contrasted against the bleakness and shabbiness of her life is just so fucking devastating.
This scene defines the term compassion.
