Ah, yes. I remember the crazy of animated movies based on my favorite Saturday morning cartoons. Well, one Saturday morning cartoon since I came in a little late for the majority of the 90s...but yes, Recess: School's Out is one of the movies I had my parents take me to see.
I liked all the music except for when the two-legged unicorn sang a song. That song made me cringe. This was a great review and I agree that this movie was way above most children's heads.

I have to agree with marzgurl, the harpy gave me nightmares as a child too, though I really could not grasp the movie as a child and dismissed it as a liked by girls only at the time, now rewatching parts its well animated for its time, the characters are pretty well developed, its subtle enough in its messages and lets the right amount of adult humor slip in that a child would probably not notice. still original baseless opinion still tends to linger in my mind about why I dismissed it as a kid
I loved your review, and like many others here, I really prefer it over the official Nostalgia Chick's version. While hers has some laughs, yours is much wittier and presented better. If I had been judge of these entries, you would have won hands-down, simply because, compared with hers, yours is more put together, more professional (Well, as "professional" as a humor/parody movie review could be), and easier to watch.
I do have strong feelings for this movie, but I'll be one of the first to say - Beagle's novel is better and should be read for its strong depiction of the characters and world. There are fantastic scenes, images, and entire side plots and character development moments that just didn't make it into the movie, and of course those missing moments really made the book the fantastic piece of work that it is. Thanks for posting this, though; I love this style of review. :D
This was fun! Now I remember why I found the name "Red Bull" so familiar when the drink first surfaced. I like you, MarzGurl. You're a bit more erratic and outspoken than Lindsay Ellis, which is a nice change (even though I love Lindsay). It's great that NostalgiaCritic decided to feature you as well. :)

One thing I have to point out that many, many people fail to realize is that the ending to The Last Unicorn does not, I repeat, does not have a sad ending. All the characters get what they want to a certain degree which is what makes this ending seem real. As for the unicorn, thanks Shmendrick for giving her a chance to love and feel regret. Listen closely to the finally dialogue. Just because its not the usual "I'm so happy I got exactly what I wanted" ending doesn't make it a sad one.

This movie pretty much does the same thing that every other movie made for a book does: it cuts out quite a few of the most important parts and if you don't pay close attention, little to none of it makes sense especially when it comes to fantasy like this movie. In order to really fully appreciate the amazing creativeness of this story, I highly recommend reading the book then watching the movie again. (This is what I did just this year when I finally found the book in the library.)
Did you know that they basically made this movie without the creator's rights? There's a whole scandal behind it that the guy himself told me at Anime Expo 09 which was pretty damn interesting actually.
The original novel was a deliberately anachronistic jibe at the fantasy genre as a whole. Thus lines like "I'll write you a reference," "have a taco," most of the things the butterfly says, etc., as well as references to heroes and dragonslaying and whatnot.
I really think more kids' movies should be this complex. Messages from this movie stayed with me for years as I tried to puzzle them out, and I'm richer for it. (Also, sad endings rule.)
Molly always confused me. First she was all like 'Change her form!' then it was just all like 'You stupid idiot why did you change her form?! Change her back!'. Then later in the movie right before unicorn was discover *again* by the red bull and was saying some shit about how she wanted to stay human, Molly was like 'You know you should just let her be.' The red bull comes in and Molly says: 'Change her into a unicorn!' She always got on my nerves with her mood swings.

I used to be a huge fan of this movie when I was little...but I am glad to see that the general agreement is that the film goes way over the heads of the intended audience. I loved the unicorn and especially Schmendrick...and while I had more nightmares about the red bull...I must say even as an innocent kid, the harpy and tree scenes always made me extremely...uncomfortable. The Sailor Moon theme made me giggle. but yes, i agree with the general consensus: your review of this movie is much better than the one the Nostalgia Chick just put on ThatGuy. I don't think anyone would begrudge you if you posted it there, too. But give it a week or 2 if you do.

You know you say it was way too long, but not true. I remember vaguely in the 80's and you pretty much hit the nail on the head by say this will go over the kids head and that what this movie did, it went way over my head. Never really took the time to watch now that I'm older, but however after this review i can say watching this was way more interesting than the movie. Awesome review.. Ps, the jump suit works ;)

America had a lot more hits besides A Horse with No Name as I listed earlier, but I don't think she lost the NC spot because of that. She lost because Dudette did a great review. Still, this review was really good. It brought back a lot of weird memories. Last Unicorn was the first movie we recorded on vcr, and my sister's and I watched it a lot back in the 80s. I was about 4 when I first saw and I remember the same parts she's describing disturbing me vividly.
I like this review. Probably my favorite of the ones you've done. And I remember this movie fondly as a kid. But were you being sarcastic when you said you couldn't think of any other song America did? Horse with No name? Tin Man? Ventura Highway? Lonely People? Sister Golden Hair? I Need You? You're a Texas girl so you must have heard them.

I really think more kids' movies should be this complex. Messages from this movie stayed with me for years as I tried to puzzle them out, and I'm richer for it. (Also, sad endings rule.)

Molly always confused me. First she was all like 'Change her form!' then it was just all like 'You stupid idiot why did you change her form?! Change her back!'. Then later in the movie right before unicorn was discover *again* by the red bull and was saying some shit about how she wanted to stay human, Molly was like 'You know you should just let her be.' The red bull comes in and Molly says: 'Change her into a unicorn!' She always got on my nerves with her mood swings.

I always liked your review of this movie more than the Nostalgia Chick's walk-and-talk one.

G rating does not equal 4 kids... yes... this movie is sophisticated... I'll always like it... even though it's not the best movie ever... Rankin Bass did many of these adaptations... I commend them actually for staying true to the book on every one I've seen... Disney sure would have changed this a lot... I like the ending... it means something

MarzGurl...my hat's off to you! This was the most hilarious, side-splitting experience I've had on youtube! I used to be a huge fan of this movie when I was little...but I am glad to see that the general agreement is that the film goes way over the heads of the intended audience. I loved the unicorn and especially Schmendrick...and while I had more nightmares about the red bull...I must say even as an innocent kid, the harpy and tree scenes always made me extremely...uncomfortable. Well done!

The Sailor Moon theme made me giggle. but yes, i agree with the general consensus: your review of this movie is much better than the one the Nostalgia Chick just put on ThatGuy. I don't think anyone would begrudge you if you posted it there, too. But give it a week or 2 if you do.

You're right. I watched this film when I was little and I never got it either. It was over my head. and I can now see that there is alot of mature content in it too.

You know you say it was way too long, but not true. I remember vaguely in the 80's and you pretty much hit the nail on the head by say this will go over the kids head and that what this movie did, it went way over my head. Never really took the time to watch now that I'm older, but however after this review i can say watching this was way more interesting than the movie. Awesome review.. Ps, the jump suit works ;)

America had a lot more hits besides A Horse with No Name as I listed earlier, but I don't think she lost the NC spot because of that. She lost because Dudette did a great review. Still, this review was really good. It brought back a lot of weird memories. Last Unicorn was the first movie we recorded on vcr, and my sister's and I watched it a lot back in the 80s. I was about 4 when I first saw and I remember the same parts she's describing disturbing me vividly.
