Recently I made a plane and used a script to turn the propellers from a sculpt, when it's turned off, to a tube, when it's turned on and they are spinning. I configured the script to change the size (making it flat), texture and rotation, and also the textures from the wooden texture of the sculpt to a blur effect texture I made, the sides are made transparent. I also had to make the script change the mapping from default to planar since the top and bottom sides of a tube have distorsions.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS POST, it really helped. Id been wondering how to fix the prob for ages as I was trying to texture the decking of my ship as the deck tapered to the end.
The place where I've gotten the most use out of this is in building ships. The floors taper as you get to the front and rear of the boat. Using planar mapping on the texture makes it really easy to line those textures up with the non-tapered prims in the center section.
Torley, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I've been trying to fix the roof panels on my house for 6 months now, and nobody I asked knew what to do. This is me doing a Happy Dance! Look out spanish tiles, I've got you now. *GRIN* Be well, Bellini
when playing with some texture animating scripts I discovered that the compressed sections of the texture on the planar cylinder are also flipped horizontally. Freaky =O
So that's how it works. I knew the option and used it sometimes but didn't really realize the 'way' it works different but only saw the visual outcome and I had mostly used it on round surfaces... Silly me
I've learned something again. ^.~ Thank you Torley

This is just what I needed!
Another Great Tutorial!
Now if you can just get SL to revert to work with the previous Quicktime version for Windows 2k Users. I don't want to use a bloated XP just for SL!
Love your tutorials tho!
Thanks Torley!
